Is the w530 a good choice?
>>
Is there a way to get a better color calibration at t420 screen? I just put it side-by-side with a lower 1360x768 screen (The t420 got a 1600x900 one) both running the full hd video of the new spider-man game.

Even with a better resolution, the t420 is just destroyed. The vibrant colors in this acer notebook allow me to see much more detail, even in a lower res.

Is there anything to make this better? Right now it's kinda obnoxious.
>>
>>60887630
yes, if you can live with such gigantic screen and it's weight
>>60887643
AFAIK no. You can disable PWM to make it a little better, but it has nothing to do with colors.
>>
seller says they don't do returns and may replace accessories at will when shipping.
will ebay basically take the financial hit if they send me a laptop that:

Are the new Lenovo ThinkPads worth it? Looking for a workstation grade laptop for graphical design and 3D shit with emphasis on mobility, budget is up to $2k but I'd rather spend in the mid thousand range. My friend is telling me to get the Gigabyte Aero 14 but the trackpad looks shit and I am not going to carry peripherals when my emphasis is mobility. I just really like using the clit desu
>>
>>60892818
If you can accept new keyboard and ULV trash then it should be fine.
>workstation grade laptop
t470p or p50/p70
>>
>>60890981
It means it's spinning at 100%
>>
>>60892818
Dude, most user reviews on lenovo's US website are positive. If you like the brand (Thinkpad) you know what to expect.

If your emphasis is graphical design and 3d shit, maybe a fully tuned t470p could work for you. It has an kaby-lake quad-core, nvidia graphics shit and all, while being more mobile than the p51.

I think it would fit your needs better, considering graphical and 3d shit at least.
>>
Thanks for the recs brehs. Not a requirement, but would I be able to play an occasional game on medium to high specs on any of these?

>>60893172
I've only used the IBM ThinkPads, so I didn't know what to expect with the new Lenovo ownership

>>60892880
No way to overcome ULV? New keyboards are chiclet, right?
>>
>>60893172
Just to add.

T470p specs:

System component

Intel Core i7-7820HQ Processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.90GHz)
14" WQHD (2560 x 1440) IPS, anti-glare, non-touch
32GB(16+16) DDR4 2400MHz SODIMM
NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB GDRR5
1 TB Solid State Drive OPAL2.0 PCIe-NVMe
ThinkPad Battery 6 cell Li-Ion (72Wh)
14.0" WQHD(2560x1440) IPS Anti-Glare Display, No touch, WLAN, WWAN, Paint

For 1800's bucks.

Meanwhile, p51:

System component

Intel Core i7-7820HQ Processor (8MB Cache, up to 3.90GHz)
Windows 10 Pro 64 English
15.6" FHD (1920x1080), anti-glare, IPS
32GB(16+16) DDR4 2400MHz SODIMM
NVIDIA Quadro M1200 4GB GDDR5
512GB SSD PCIe TLC OPAL2
6 Cell Li-Polymer Battery, 90Wh

You could expend a bit more and get a Xeon on the p51 tho.

The main thing here, is mobility vs upgrades.

If you get the most basic p51 with a xeon E3 1535M processor, costing $2175,20, you can over the years upgrade a machine that will probably outlast anything you could think of buying. p51 can handle up to 64 gigs of RAM, lots of hard drive options, not even counting M.2 slots. The definitive portable desktop, if you ask me.

But if you just want a simple machine to do it's job, and have mobility too, the t470p will serve you well too. It''s not like the 7820HQq would leave you wanting for more.
>>
>>60893229
Hey, both the 7820HQ and the xeon 1535M ARE NOT ULV, each consuming 45W

Take your time:

>>60893358
Just seemed a bit unfair to mention the T470p's top screen option against the P51's most basic. It's only 2.2k with the 4k configuration, applying the EPP discount in OP should get it within budget.

my 13 inch retina MacBook pro 2014 got stolen and I am going through homeowners insurance to get the $1500 that my aunt graciously paid for it to help me through college

I really want to still have a laptop that is running macos and I also want kaby lake but I don't really like the new MacBook pros because I'm gonna need usb c adapters out the ass and it costs another $300 out of my own pocket just to get 4 usb c ports instead of 2 and a touch bar

I just really love how all the programs I use are more stable in macos and how intuitive it is when using multi finger gestures on a trackpad......plus I already have a windows computer and gnu is counterproductive for the tasks that I need to perform on a daily basis

I hear chinkpads are widely supported in the hackintosh community

is there support available or at least confirmed for the T470s to run Sierra and later on High Sierra or should I even bother with chinkpad hackbooks?

>>
>>60893926
How good are the batteries though?

My 6 year old Acer has only a sixth of his initial capacity. But that is not a problem, because the battery can be easily swapped.
When the same happens with a macbook, its basically worthless.
>>
>>60895027
Depending on the model it's around a 10 minute process.
>>
>>60895124
Ok, my bad. I thought every Macbook has a battery like the ones in the 12" model.
>>
>>60895148
Those are glorified ipads.
For macbook pros it it doesn't like much of an easy swap but nothing made by apple really is anyway. Here's an ifixit guide for reference
https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Retina+Display+Early+2015+Battery+Replacement/45137
As far as I understand
-take off the bottom panel
-unplug the battery
-unplug the speakers (this probably was done to give you a wider working area but I can't tell from ifixit's retarded camera angles though I think you can skip this bit)
-unplug trackpad
-skip all of ifixits bullshit on removing the battery (like what the fuck is all that solvent shit and heater for. Just use a hair dryer you dirty fucking jews)
-heat up the battery but not too much
-take a card of some sorts and pry off
-install new battery and put everything back together
Probably not a 10 but a 15 20 minute process depending on how good you are at prying off electronics

That 4 drive mod seems cool desu
>>
>>60896116

What?
>>
>>60896172
2570p can take 4 drives no? One in original sata bay, one in the caddy, one msata by soldering on a msata slot to the unused USB 3 headers and one last msata by soldering another slot through the esata making for a total of 4 drives or something like that. I vaguely remember something like that in one of 2570p posts
>>
>>60896204
Why do you need 4 drives for something that's designed with portability in mind?
>>
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Lenovo-Thinkpad-X1-Carbon-i5-5200U-4-GB-RAM-180-GB-SSD-Full-HD-Win-10-/272678186680?hash=item3f7ce2eeb8:g:h2gAAOSw8lpZHsZY

This looks like a good deal. Although the specs are the lowest possible.
>>
>>60896209
Why would you need a quad core with portability in mind? Because it's fucking neat. If I want some autismo number of drives and a quad core in my ultraportable workstation why shouldn't I?
Also isn't having excessive features the whole point of owning a 2570p?
>>
>>60896219

One 2,5"
Second 2,5" in modded ODD via USB 3.0
Third mSATA in modded ODD via normal SATA
Fourth mSATA in WWAN slot with eSATA>mSATA mod

But it's pretty fucking pointless to keep 4 drives in one laptop, desu. 1TB SSD + 2TB HDD should be enough. If you need more get USB 3.0 dock and connect external 10TB HDDs to store more animu

No it's not.
And that's the reason 2570p isn't the best ultraportable laptop.

We could all just sit here and count all the reasons why one is better than the other
I'm just happy to have two great options in the 12.5 form factor
>>
Anyone here who uses a used laptop?
Have you ever thought about the preowner jizzing all over it? Or if not that, just touching the keys and the trackpad with his cum fingers?
Like seriously, pretty much everyone jerks off, and i suppose most people arent that clean.
>>
>>60896502
You're right there's no best ultraportable.
But there are some common things you should keep in mind for ultraportable laptops
>No optic drive
>10"-13"
>under 4 lbs
>decent specs
And since second gen Core i are becoming obsolete it's time to choose something that can last a few more years.

Of course YMMV.

If you need mobility, ULV is great, while still running most casual stuff pretty well. (Even better when t470 can deliver 12/14hours with normal usage using the 6cell battery.)

Lenovo's website seems to have some discounts right now, but you probably already tryed that.
>>
>>60896859
Under heavy workload, yes, 2 hour.

Normal usage for browsing, photoshop and all? 7-10hors:
https://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Lenovo-ThinkPad-T470p-Core-i7-GeForce-940MX-Laptop.215284.0.html

"Our test unit is equipped with the largest battery available for this device. The Lithium Ion battery that has 72 Wh can be easily removed and replaced. Alternatively, the Lenovo ThinkPad T470p can also be purchased with a smaller 47-Wh battery. Accordingly, the runtimes will then be considerably shorter than we specified here. Without load, our test unit will keep its lights on for 17:39 hours. Under load, however, unfortunately the battery is already empty after 82 minutes, which is mainly due to the power-hungry processor."

And note that, this unit has a quad-core and a dedicated GPU.

Does anybody use thinkfan? How exactly does the lower-bound and upper-bound work? The sample config has temps that overlap, does the next level engage when the current level's upper-bound gets crossed or the next level's lower-bound? How about when going down a level, does it switch when it hits the lower level's upper-bound or the current level's lower-bound?

A new L470, with an i5 7200U, and the FHD screen (Tough you could settle for the 720p one and have better battery life, as you said, "for business purposes" comes out for 727 bucks.

Look, you could get old thinkpads for much cheaper, if you don't care too much about battery life. And even fit a ssd in them. Also, don't fall for the "Don't buy the L-Series" meme, they're too mil-spec and quite resistant.

Upgrade options, the T has 2 batteries, one inside the notebook chassis, so you can swap it on the go, different ports, and the plastic used to built him is better overall.

The L-series STILL has mil-spec tho, and if you look trough reviews, they usually appraise them. It's just not the """"""real""""" thing.

Your shitty HP NEETbook can't overclock properly and only does BCLK overclock (unstable shit) and it will not go past ~2.82 GHz (stock is 2.7GHz). You cannot up your clock multiplier like ThinkPad chipsets can.

I use Debian though, not Windows

This W520 is a great improvement over my T420s, runs cooler, is more powerful and the display is the biggest improvement which I did not except at all since I was not aware they used better screens on these
IDK did I get that good deal on it though, I paid 400€ + shipping for it (in this country almost all others seem to go 500-600€ most of the time) and it is equipped with i7-2720QM, 8GB of RAM and had a 120GB SSD in it too already and the 1080p panel, I'm happy with it though since I upgraded it to 16GB and cleaned it and replaced the bad condition and worn out keyboard to the one from my T420s which is almost like new, and now it's great, only cons I can think is that the 170W power supply is gigantic, but I don't mind the laptop itself being bigger

not sure why you would want to cheap out on an SSD, it'll last for years and you can always put it in a newer machine

Samsung 850 EVO, Crucial MX300, SandDisk SSD PLUS, are what I would look at.

Samsung is overall the best in performance and reliability and has 5 year warranty. Crucial and SanDisk have 3 year warranties. Crucial has better performance and SanDisk is the cheapest.

>NVIDIA GeForce 940MX 2GB GDRR5
I'm sorry, but isn't that graphics card a bit outdated? For less I can get www_.newegg._com/ Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834233191
For a slightly weaker processor, much better video card, and the same mobility in weight and size with a 2 hour difference in battery. From what I understand, the 1000 series NVIDIA GPUs are leaps and bounds better than their predecessors, right? Then, what makes the t470p the better laptop here? The only real gripe I have with the Aero 14 is the shitty trackpad that might force me to use a mouse on the go, but otherwise it looks like a better deal to me. Please convince me lads, I've used IBM ThinkPads all my life for their cost effectiveness and durability.

Hello /tpg/, what does it mean when my battery light on my T60 is flashing orange?
>>
>>60901690
it's dead but charging, it should stop flashing and become solid orange and then turn slow blinking green

I think that's how it works anyways
>>
>>60900775
nevermind youre in france
>>
so I need a cheal laptop and there is this thinkpad meme so why not

Budget: $100ish
Location: whatever is in europe and has US layout
Size: whatever 13 or 15
Performance: playing video without lag
Other requirements: a fucking trackpad

Dont listen to the dumb tripfag HP shill ITT. I have a 2570p and while it has an upgradable processor unlike x230, here's what sucks ass-
>shitty screen(I don't think it is upgradable, correct me if I'm wrong)
>mediocre keyboard(no upgrades, x230's is better and yet you can still install the classic one)
>horrible trackpoint(if you are a thinkpad fan you'll probably puke your guts out while using it. This is definitely a no go for any old thinkpad fags who used to own t60s and other early ibms)
>mediocre build quality. The guts are "protected" by a thin pseudo metal covering and I wouldn't want to risk it even accidentally falling down on the ground. Also, while metal is durable, it can acquire dents. Metal also adds to the weight and bulky feeling of the laptop. This could have been solved by using some high grade carbon fibre(like on a thinkpad) which is durable, light weight and feels sleek.
As you can probably guess, I'll be trading it for an x230/x220 or t420/t430. For a thinkpad user, it is not worth it. Also, the upgradable CPU shouldn't be a priority as the price per performance of an upgrade is not justifiable(atleast for me). It is better to upgrade a desktop computer(where the performance increase is significant). Also, Add to the cost a good thermal paste(and maybe a bigger heat sink).
>>
>>60902045
To add further: it basically is just like HP thought, "hey what if we try to merge together a Mac with a thinkpad?"
while their motives were right , what they created in my eyes, was an abomination
>>
>>60898097
I should have read the entire
man thinkfan.conf
and not just the fan level section

"If the temperature reaches the upper bound, we switch to the next fan level, and if it drops below the lower bound, we switch to the previous fan level."
>>
what's the best thinkpad money can buy
>>
>>60902045
Oh, I also missed out that its lacks middle mouse button. My bad. You'd be disappointed by this if you were a loyal thinkpad user

Just use whatever distro you like best. Im using Manjaro KDE for mainly 3 reasons, its as fast to setup as Ubuntu, AUR, and non-free Nvidia drivers are setup with bumblebee automatically.

welp apparently the backlight fuse or either all the spare screens and lcd cables i had went bad at the same time

even then apparently the ULV processors aren't too bad
there was someone on reddit who was saying they could play Overwatch on low at 60fps with the lowest i5
