Need to purchase a workstation for scientific computing. Thinking of going with System76 cause it ain't my money, but wondering if there are better options out there.
Just build it yourself

This, or buy old server hardware.

Scientific computing? Like what?
Dell, Lenovo and HP all sell workstation prebuilt basedon GNU/Linux. They use heavily non-standard hardware like motherboards and such.
Just build one yourself lol.

System76 is your best option, see if you can have them ship it with Scientific Linux.

Get a job.

>you need to get a job because buying hardware components cheaply and putting in a bit of work to get a powerful computer is bad
>>60887176
>Wasting your time building a computer for the company
>Caring about how much the company spends on computers
Like I said, get a job.

what "scientific computing" will you be doing? googling "how do women pee" or something?
>>60887246
Yes, anon. A business is giving OP thousands of dollars to blow on a workstation computer so he can ascertain the solution to the ancient scientific unsolvable riddle, "how do women pee".

Have you considered POWER?

A workstation sometimes has to be certified.

Depends on workload, I mean if you are just talking about programming or other similar task, then yeah, a prebuilt laptop / desktop will do you fine, unless you are doing stuff requires specific CPU power or GPU power then you should consider building your own or some crazy workstation
The best option is T420
