I have fell a bit out of the loop when it comes to TV's, whats the best technology to look for at the minute?
Also why hasn't a proper OS emerged for televisions in the same vein as apple TV, chrome cast etc that will be future-proofed with updates and what not?
Smart TVs are a fucking joke. If you want a platform that will be supported, buy a rasberry pi 3, and install open/libreelec onto it.

TVs with built in mics and cameras are literal big brother telescreens. Fuck the 'smart' generation, get a dumb monitor and run a local media server.

i have an apple tv in my household, i only used it to watch netflix and crave,
but then our smart tv already had those then i had no use for the apple tv anymore. there's no webcam or mic on it so i can't do any video calling
smart tv's are alright, but if you have an xbox or ps4 then you don't really need all that extra stuff. just get a regular HDTV or 4K since it's becoming more common, actually wait on the 4k until prices go down because honestly only sports utilize 4K

I have an android box.
After some serious fiddling around, it's the greatest thing ever. Can play any retro game and watch anything I like. Highly recommend a wireless keyboard/touchpad combo

I have a vizio tv that has no "apps" but is connected to the internet and has google cast. It works great, although as of recently cast crashes during my streams
