You can softmod a PS2 with nothing more than a memory card, load games or homebrew applications from an IDE hard drive or via FTP. It's a fat/g/uy's wet dream.

Anyone with a softmodded system can add the exploit to your memory card. You can also use a retail version of HDLoader, although that's not exactly easy to find either.

Alternately, you can replace an executable (the PS2 uses .elf format, which stands for executable linked file) on certain games with the program that creates the exploit and copies it to the memory card. I used Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, ripped the DVD, made a copy, replaced the .elf for the multiplayer portion with the exploit maker, burned a DVD, then removed the top case and top cover from the DVD drive. Used the retail game to bypass the DRM, got to the main menu, popped the cover off of the drive, replaced the retail disc with my burned copy, selected multiplayer from the menu, and the PS2 booted the exploit program without a hitch.

After the exploit is installed all you need to do is boot your PS2 (or any PS2) with the memory card inserted and it's softmodded. Homebrew .elfs can be launched from the hard drive or a USB stick. You can add/remove links to .elfs from your PS2's bios screen, and if you remove the card it just goes right back to stock so you can't brick it. It's great.
>>
>>60879429
Do you have a link to a step-by-step somewhere for that kind of exploit? Seems a bit involved.
>>
>>60879441
Different guy. It is quite easy. Google it and you will find a step by step guide.
The easiest game to use is 007 Nightlife, I believe. At least some 007 game.
>>
>>60879451

It was outputting at 1080i, it was NOT rendering at 1080i.
You can pretty much run any program or game at any standard (up to) 1080p resolution with GSM.
>>
>>60879493
>Why don't you just listen to some faggot explain it in a youtube video for 12 minutes
Because those "tutorials" are always dogshit.
>>
>>60879501

GSM is dogshit, most games run at 720p or above either don't work correctly or display in a tiny window.

It's only useful for getting 480p video from games that don't support progressive scan natively (which, on the PS2, is most of them).

Well, it's a experimental program to play games that don't support a specific resolution or mode by default.
Don't know what you are complaining at it for. It does exactly what it intended.

of course, you can also just buy a memory card with fmcb preinstalled, much easier and cheaper if like me you don't have a fat ps2 and exploitable game

You sir, are a fucking retard.
He was asking how to softmod a vanilla PS2 without any particular tools, he already said he found Swapmagic and related tutorials. While >>60879429 is the simplest, cheapest and easiest way.

But if you'd actually pay attention and knew how to search for shit, you'd see the site is down from what tutorial the video was made.
It is still avaiable here (https://web.archive.org/web/20160921081507/http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/swap.php).
But you seriously think a written tutorial will be better for a complete noob like he obviously is then a proper video (if you'd watch it you'd see he makes no mistakes and explains it pretty well)?

Way to go retard.

The nice thing about the Xbox was that the overwhelming majority of its library supported progressive scan, and a decent amount of games even ran at 720p. If you have one, you can do a drop in replacement of the hard drive's ATA cable with an ATA100 cable for better load times, by the way (assuming you can track one down these days).

Literary got the game a decade ago for 8 bucks.
This is the easiest and cheapest way though.

But modchips cost like 9 bucks too, prefered if you know soldering.

Mod chips are an additional point of failure, and playing games from physical discs is pleb-tier.

Softmodding is superior, running games from a hard drive drops the load times significantly, and if there is a compatibility issue than 99.9% of the time the game is compatible with ESR and can be played from a burned DVD anyway.

The only time you should really do a mod chip is if you're stuck with a thin PS2 or if you absolutely have to play PS1 games on a PS2 instead of on a PS1 or a PC or a calculator or any number of the countless other devices that can run PS1 games these days.
>>
>>60879677
If I'm going to bother paying for anything, it'd probably be easiest just to buy a softmodded memory card wouldn't it?
>>
>>60879646
>hurr durr you didnt spend more than two minutes finding the link ur retarded!!!!

it is not fucking difficult, christ you guys seriously need a video to figure out how to do this shit

if you're that retarded, just buy a card with fmcb preinstalled, they're like ten dollars if that (and theres people that will do it for postage cost only on i think psxscene)
>>
>>60879650
I just used swapmagic and burned dvds of whatever games I wanted to play.
>>
>>60879698
>Mod chips are an additional point of failure
Not really, those chips are new fabrications, far more lasting then the original chips inside the PS2

>and playing games from physical discs is pleb-tier.
Why would you play from physical media? Modchips allow you to do everything softmodding does, with the extra of not requiring even a memory card. Plus many other features.

>Softmodding is superior, running games from a hard drive drops the load times significantly, and if there is a compatibility issue than 99.9% of the time the game is compatible with ESR and can be played from a burned DVD anyway.
Modchipping is _literary_ superior, because it does everything softmodding does, is more reliable and has more features.
It's literary 9 bucks plus some solder and wire, I can't see why not to prefer it if you can afford it.

>The only time you should really do a mod chip is if you're stuck with a thin PS2 or if you absolutely have to play PS1 games on a PS2 instead of on a PS1 or a PC or a calculator or any number of the countless other devices that can run PS1 games these days.
What has this to do with anything? Softmodding lets you play PS1 games on Slims.

Well, if you're too lazy to even do the basic stuff as soft modding it yourself, I doubt you'd get very far even with the ready made card in the long run.

With a game you can softmod forever, but you fuck up your card, you're done.
Unless you want to spend even more money to back up more softmods on memory cards.
>>
>>60879724
The video exist.
It's helpful.

Why not if he's a total noob on the subject?
>>
>>60879742
>if you're too lazy to even do the basic stuff as soft modding it yourself
No, it's because I don't have the required shit to do it. I don't have 007 or splinter cell or any of the other listed games, HDLoader, Action Replay, or Codebreaker. I'd have to go out and pay money for one of them, so I may as well just get a premodded card.

>>60879740

Excellent. I found http://psx-scene.com/forums/f153/softmodding-fat-ps2-hard-disk-drive-%5Btutorial%5D-116178/
But it seemed a little sketchy. The fact there's more than one report of doing it that way is very reassuring.

You need a computer that has support for IDE/PATA drives, if you don't, you still need to buy an adapter to connect the drive to your computer or buy a SATA adapter for the PS2s drive bay.

So is Linux on PS3. Actually one of the top supercomputers in the world is/was? a PS3 cluster. Unfortunately a firmware update removed the option.
>>
>>60879788
I'm him, dipshit, and I said it seemed a little sketchy because it was the ONLY post I found anywhere that didnt require the use of a disk.
I.E. I wasn't sure it'd even work of it was just the ramblings of some romanian weirdo getting people to download his spyware zip file.
>>
>>60879796
That's why it was said that the PS2 is more open
>>
>>60879776
Fuck. I wanted to try it.
>>
>>60879796

The Air Force built a supercomputing cluster with PS3s with the help of Sony because for a while it was the cheapest way to get Cell CPUs.

Then Cell Broadband Engine was supposed to be the next big thing with supercomputing and server usage but outside of the PS3 and a few models of Sony TVs it wasn't very successful.
>>
>>60879818
Was there any real advantage to Cell or was all just a meme?
>>
>>60879815
Do you not have some ancient tower laying around with a PATA slot on it? I know the shits old but we only finally phased the damn things off of motherboards in around 2010
>>
>>60879826

Cell was super fast at very specific types of math. It was really great for crunching numbers for specific fields but outside of that it became cheaper and easier to just go x86 or ARM instead.

It was better but Sony was cursed by a gypsy woman back in the 70s or something and as a result all of their proprietary technology gets outsold by an inferior competitor (Betamax, Minidisc, Pro Duo, Cell, etc).

Honestly I think that the Blu-Ray spec is the first time they've ever really 100% won a format war, and they weren't even the sole creators/owners of the technology.
