>folks over at PC Gamer looked at doing just that, and came up with a reasonably comparable build
>The total price of that system came to $4,686.71, only $313 cheaper than the base iMac Pro.

Then they include shit like this
>1080 Ti 11GB Founders Edition
>founders edition
>$650 mobo
> Liquid cooling
>1000W PSU(Titanium)
>actually paid $140 for windows 7

Holy fuck I've never been so triggered.
>>
>>60865825
Yeah, I don't get why people try and make "comparable" build lists to Apple's iMac Pro or 2013 Mac Pro...
Apple's Pro desktop hardware is actually reasonably priced unless you don't value workstation grade hardware like ECC, Workstation GPU's, massively multicore CPU's, and dope AF screens.

>>
>>60865871
But where's the proof?
>>
>>60865825
"News" websites are being retarded in taking community attempts to price alternatives to the iMac Pro and making stories on it.

They are going to put things in it you cannot buy right now, so we don't know the costs of some of the parts, and in six months prices will have changed anyway so a $300 saving now may be $600 by then.

Also, I priced up as close an equivalent as I could (DDR4 2666 being the only real issue) and got it to just under $1000 cheaper than the basic iMac Pro so RIP you shitters.
>>
>>60865825
>1080ti

Yeah, no
>>
>>60865825

>1080ti

Should be using a Quadro card since this is a workstation which would likely drive the price higher. Also, you have to pay for Windows. I doubt a corporation is going to pirate several hundred (due to the expense of the iMac, only few in a large operation will use one) copies of Windows and maintain all of the pirated versions throughout their service life.
>>
>>60865979
Windows 10 is free
>>
>>60865984
No it's not
>>
>>60865984
Why do you have to pay for it when you configure a business laptop with Linux or Windows? The Windows version costs more.
>>
>>60865841
OEM workstation was better then Mac Pros for a pretty long time . Custom Build isn't necessarily.
>>
>>60865979
The problem is that we don't know the performance of the base model AMD card at all so picking a comparable Quadro is difficult.

The other problem is the stupid amount of spending, like the pointless 1000W PSU, the liquid cooling, the $650 motherboard, the $150 case and the Apple keyboard and mouse where you could easily save a few hundred more.
>>
>>60866049
Anyone with half a brain could save potentially $1000+ with the same specs.

People buy Apple shit for the brand.
Nothing more.
>>
>>60866065
The worse part is people comparing it to the Lenovo workstation which had a $2000 Quadro graphics card and three years on-site support.

For companies getting three years on-site support is worth paying an extra $1000 or so.
And Apple Care is in no way comparable.
>>
>>60865825
add comparing June prices to December prices (when the iMac Pro presumably drops)

I really feel you can't really beat the price for an equal price and performance, I try make a equivalent build for the same price and here's what I got so far

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/Herplooza/saved/zQyhMp

I still I wasn't able to complete beat it and actually went over the budget
>>
>>60865825
First off, the 1080Ti is not a workstation card.

They have to put in a Quadro card, which start at around $1400.

The Vega card is 11Tflop with HBM2 memory, it will likely cost $1500 retail.

Second, the Xeon CPU is not $400 on the base model. It's likely a higher end/newer Xeon on a newer architecture (afaik Intel will be coming out with new Xeons by December) so Apple has it first. It will likely cost $1200.

Now go kys.

This is a workstation for film, 3d, art related work, not a gaymen system.

Most people can get by the regular iMac.
>>
Mos people just don't know who apple's target audience is for this machine. They keep talking about how they can build cheaper systems.
>>
>>60865988
dude, windows 10 costs like 5 bucks...
I buy copies the whole time
>>
>>60866389
It's been like this for 20 years. Sounds like /pcmasterrace/.

Apple is trying to please the pissed off Mac Pro crowd until they release a new Mac Pro later next year/2019.

This is a great sign I thought Tim Cuck was going to kill the Pro Mac line. That filthy faggot.
>>
>>60865825
Why is it so hard to accept that some Apple products have compelling value?

Apple is one the most profitable corporations of the planet. If they want to make a killer product price-wise they can, and they can still make huge profits out of them.

Apple can make a bulk order of 10 million iMacs and get huge factory discounts for assembly and great deals with each of their hardware providers (Intel, AMD and Samsung mostly).

When you "build your PC", each separate piece has to be individually shipped from factory to packaging to a warehouse or two and finally to your house. Each individual manufacturer incurs in marketing costs for each and YOU the end user is paying for it.

Apple doesn't have this problem.
>>
>>60866344
Vega is not going to retail at $1500, you are off your rocker.

$800 at most, but I strongly suspect $599 or $499.

You know those can be blacklisted right?

I mean I've bought a few for like $10 myself and haven't had trouble...yet....but these are usually OEM keys bought in bulk that can't be sold separately, so in theory you're breaking their EULA, which in return means it's illegal.

Here, I fixed it for you.
>>
>>60866421
Fucking bullshit. It's a workstation GPU you idiot.

If anyone remembers the D700 off the 2013 Mac Pro, it cost like $1500 retail but Apple got a deal for $600 each (since it was a dual GPU computer). I remember someone actually did research to find the price for the D700s.

So go fuck off, ok.

I'm tired of you PC fags.

>>
First they release a mini pro, then an imac pro. In another five years maybe they'll release a pro pro.
>>
>>60866420
They didn't get to be one of the most profitable corporations by cutting their margins, anon.
>>
>>60866420
>Apple can make a bulk order of 10 million iMacs and get huge factory discounts for assembly and great deals with each of their hardware providers (Intel, AMD and Samsung mostly).
This is certainly true but they also don't want to sit on 5 million unsold iMacs for too long which is why they put on a more substantial markup than any individual middle man in the BYO side.

No company wants to be sitting on unsold stock, but the risk is usually the greatest for the last company in the line.
In the case of iMacs, that's Apple.

>>60866344
>Second, the Xeon CPU is not $400 on the base model. It's likely a higher end/newer Xeon on a newer architecture (afaik Intel will be coming out with new Xeons by December) so Apple has it first. It will likely cost $1200.

>>
>>60866431
Atleast the oem build didnt throttle cpu to 0.8ghz you retard..

Ex trashcan user here.
>>
>>60866420
They don't make "huge profits" off Macs since R&D costs so much to them.

They ONLY start to make money like 1 year down the line after a new product launch. It's like the console market, ie Sony spends like 100 million to R&D the PS3, then it costs so and so, and they only start to profit 1-2 years into it.

The iPhone is different, because it costs around $250 to build/manufacture it and sell it for $649 at a minimum, so they quickly recoup their R&D investment and then some.

Macs were never ever profitable. I'm surprised /g/ is so dumb not to realize this despite all the autism here.

Maybe if you fags stop playing vidya gaymes you can go be an adult and understand finances.
>>
>>60866439
Well, I took out his ludicrous $1800 CPU and put in the most likely equivalent to what Apple will use.
I didn't bother with anything else.
>>
>>60866467
I've used the 6 core Trash Can and it never throttled. I don't know about the 12 core.

I also had the Cheesegrater 12 core for years and it never throttled, had amazing cooling and was whisper quiet. Probably the best computer Apple has made. People still use it despite it beomg 5-7 years old.

Apple is not going to put in a $400 CPU in the base model.

It will likely be the Xeon E7-4809 v4, which starts at $1200.

No-one is going to put a 4S CPU into a workstation, anon. Certainly not one that costs only $5000
>>
>>60866491
No, I've worked on multi-million dollar projects with it. (I work in Film).

We never use Windows anywhere, everyone hates it.

But I could sense some of the companies I work for wanting to move to Windows because they were scared Apple would drop the Mac line (except for the MacBook Pro).

But now this makes me and everyone I know happy. Also official eGPU support is a + in my opinion, now I don't have to worry about outdated GPUs.

Thunderbolt 4 should be exciting, to get 100% of GPU performance instead of 80%? that'd be great.

No one is going to put a processor from 2012 into an iMac Pro you dolt.

The processors you idiots put in your lists are slower than the 2013 Mac Pro processors.

It will likely be a Skylake/Kaby Lake Xeon line that starts from $1200.

Also you forgot the $400 Intel 10GbE cards. kys

You buy OEM keys from chink PC manufacturers who illegally flip Windows keys on the side. They're permanently tied to the hardware and will be deactivated once Microsoft finds out.
