What makes RX480 so good for mining, and why not RX 5xx series?

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

>>

Any Polaris10 is good for mining.
>>
I dont know and I dont care, but I just put mine on Amazon for $500 wish me luck senpai.

pixie farts
>>
>>60862667

AMD cards are better at mining ethereum than nvidia. Doesnt matter though if the are so expensive above msrp. Nvidia can mine other coins and get the same $.
>>
>>60862667
correct me if im wrong, but isnt the 500 series just an overclocked version of the 400 series? If so the increased hashrate probably doesn't make up for the increased power consumption
>>
>>60862667
Your assumption is wrong, retard
>>
>>60864155

Correct, OP is wrong, RX500 cards are just slightly beefed up RX400 cards. Exact same architecture.
>>
>>60862667
Tiny over clock on 580 makes consume sky rocket.
>>
>>60862667
the 580 is better at mining, dipshit. you can undervolt it better due to the better chips
>>
>>60864193
same architecture, some features that didn't get polished up in time for the 480 launch were activated for the 580...
all in the all the differences are marginal for performance but raise energy consumption significantly, especially on non-reference cards.
>>
>>60864400
yes and no.

the yes:
yields are slightly better, but this means that more 580s are being made per wafer vs. 570s or rejects. the difference to each individual asic's under/(over)volting is marginal, but it is indeed measurable.

the no:
some aib's power circuitry does not throttle/self-off in the same way that reference circuitry does (parts of AIB board are always on), meaning you might have a chip that is using less electricity, but the whole board is using similar amounts to original.

tldr; do your research

The rx580 is a overcloked rx480
>>
>>60862667
They're not better at all, but you're missing the point.
When the RX5xx series were launched, AMD dropped prices for the older cards, people who do this mining shit wants to buy the cheap cards and get most out of it.
The benefit with the AMD gpus are single integer precision and single float precision abilities.

I can't even buy a RX 580. I HATE YOU MINERS SO MUCH
>>
>>60866400
Soon you will be able - they will switch to Vega and sell their "extensively tested cards" (*)

(*) tested for 4 four months 24/7 .
>>
Aren't both AMD and NVidia about to bring stripped down mining cards to the market in the near future?
That's should ease the availability of RX580s at least
>>
>>60866542
> Aren't both AMD and NVidia about to bring stripped down mining cards to the market in the near future?
Won't come soon enough, and when come, will be useless. I'm pretty sure that's hoax to give false hope.
>>
Hahaha I can buy rx580 for $250...
>>
>>60866400
>tfw just sold my 480 tonight for nearly double of what I paid for it initially
Sorry but not really
>>
>>60866629
How
>>
Are old cards any good at mining? I've got a sapphire 6950 2 GB laying around doing nothing. Worth using for mining eth or something, or selling on ebay?
>>
>>60869031
No.

Memory bandwidth is their most limiting factor.
>>
>>60869084
Figures being old, thanks.
>>
>>60869122
You can always mine XMR or other CPU coins
http://cpucoinlist.com/
>>
>>60869152
true but im running an r9 fury so I'll just stick to that. 6950 is just sitting in the basement.

1070 mines Etherum well.
Given that RX580s cost more than it, 1070s are the better buy now (which is why they're also all going out of stock)
>>
>>60869031
Any 2GB+ card can mine Etherum. But you might make like $300 at most off it over 6 months of mining. Not exactly a lot of money. Maybe more if Etherum value really jumps to the moon

It has 2 GB VRAM
>>

let us know how it goes

Here's another 2GB GPU that can't mine Ethereum: Radeon HD4850

>>

No Ethereum GPU mining software supports OpenCL 1.0.
>>
Mining is still profitable? How much can I make a day with a 970?
>>
>>60871049
Considering how much the 900 series sucks power not a lot
>>
>hobby miners
waste of time/effort/money
all you do is jack up the price of GPUs while industrial boys get them off the boat before retail and close your profitability window
>>
Is it worth mining if I have about 32 GTX 1070, which I mostly use for C simulations (I need the CUDA cores), and don't pay electricity?
>>
>>60871476
>Is it worth mining if I [...] don't pay electricity?
yes
>>
>>60871357
Only really heard about all this since I went to buy a RX580 and they are all massively inflated. I'm not in a rush however and can wait until the next stock comes in to buy, not worth it in my eyes buying Nvidia as the consensus seems to be AMD performs better in the long run with updated drivers. Not that either choice matters, I'll only really be playing Overwatch, CSGO and maybe Battlefront 2 when it comes out.
>>
I never had free electricity anywhere in my entire life. Where do you people find it?
>>
>>60872159
I mined at my school dorm back in the bitcoin meme days
>>
>>60866542
Why doesn't AMD & nVidia beat them too it and just mine themselves?
>>
>>60872322
My dorm had individual electricity meters for each room :(
>>
>>60872159
My neighbors.

I have a buried industrial three prong extention cord running from a junction in their wall to my garage where the mining rig is.

Set it all up when they went to Vegas last year.
>>
>>60872413
Dunno, why doesn't a government or institution aim one of their multi-petaflop supercomputers at it? Bet they'd have plenty of coins pretty fucking quick.

You want to know why? Because it's a bunch of retarded bubbly bullshit that will burst in less than a month.

Some condos and apartments include it at a flat rate as part of the condo fee. My mom's place has it, and a friend of mine used to rent an apartment downtown that had it too. We used to leave the AC running 24/7 through the summer at that place.

They won't, they're a rich couple who leave their lights on all the time. They don't give two shits about their power bill.
>>
>>60872581
Because they get free money already.
They use that computing power for science simulations and spying.
>it would be funny if someone got a mining rootkit into one of them though.
