Second for HP sucks with exception of HP 2570p (being the master race and official /g/ destroyer of x220 and x230 thinkpads)
>>
>>60859222

Yeah, 2570p for max performance if you decide to pay up, but you better have house insurance ;)

Here are some CONS I found about 2570p:
-heavy (4.5lb vs 3lbs)
-huge ugly bezel around the screen(lelnovo have em too but they did them right)
-no mSata
-small track pad
-no keyboard backlight(x230 has it PLUS the light bulb)
-comes with ton of useless bloatware
-telephone jack(this is debatable desu so not really a con)
-cd/dvd drive(who needs these anymore. they could have saved some lbs here)
-TN only display(dankpads come with IPS option)
-disgusting keyboard layout

IMO at stock level x230 wins, but if you gonna rig 2570p then it wins.
If you have time and money to bother with "extra" performance then get 2570p.
For those who want it to "just work", and then simply upgrade to the next gen x230 in 2020 or whenever will be happy with the thinkpad.

The big plus for HP is that it looks terrible so I guess no one will want to steal it for you.

are you retarded? This is literally how you mount second 2,5" HDD. So msata isn't needed, unless you want 3 drives in one laptop.

and let me guess, you're too retarded to install linux or clean windows if you count this as con?

x230 touchpad is smaller than 2570p. x230 touch keys space is restricted, so be fair and count two physical touchpad buttons in 2570p too.
>They are, but their bloatware is "better".
How? default 2570p OS image has exact same functionality provided by "bloatware", which is 3d drive protection (same as thinkpad APS), system updater, support client (showing warranty info, etc), thinkpads also got the power manager which is integrated in case of 2570p into the support client. Both got hotkey support, all drivers, etc.
So how is thinkpad bloatware better? Please elaborate. I'm really interested in what you're talking about.
>But come on now.
I don't recall saying thinkpad shitlet keyboard is acceptable. In fact this funny print screen button instead of menu key is a deal breaker for me and in my previous t430 I had to replace the entire keyboard just to get this key.
But 2570p keyboard is fine, as long as it's genuine and you replace this small rubber piece of shit with ThinkPad clit.

Wow, my friend saved me from buying an x240. Those things have the fugly clickpad, and I cba to replace it with a proper (x250) one.

Anything else in that sort of vein I should check out? I just want a nice $300, used 12-14'' laptop. Part of what drew me to the x240 was that I could upgrade the screen to 1080p IPS.

>>
>>60861486
>W530 over $700
That's a load of shit. It's rare to see them as low as $300 but $700 is overpriced. $400-$500 is a more realistic price range. And you won't be getting even remotely comparable gaming performance out of anything smaller in the same price range. Maybe the 8470w.
>>
>>60861558
Maybe a T430 with a Alienware M14x display, maybe a X230 with the IPS screen.

I'll try to dig up the text I have somewhere written by IBM's engineers at (IIRC) the Boca Raton plant on the internal IBMPC forums. They mourned the drop in quality once Lenovo didn't have to meet IBM's marks.
The first thing to go, they said, were the FlexView screens. The cases remain much the same but the guts are generic Lenovo.
The ThinkPad brand doesn't guarantee a good laptop like it used to. Just like HP no longer stands for quality products.

All you need is a small usb drive with freedos and linux to compile chosen patches. Remember to also include the battery DRM removal patch that by default is disabled. YOu can enable it by removing the .OFF part from it's name.

Yes, you can change the screen, but your options are limited and it's a time costly project to do so. You would be better off just buying a X220 with IPS screen already installed or enjoy hunting dat screen and possibly buying +100$ for that screen.

Do keep in mind that you can install 16gb ram on a X220.

Barely (<15FPS).
Get x230 with hd4000 instead. For that price that's probably best option.
If you're lucky maybe you can get the IPS version.

x220 supports by default 2 so-dimm 1333MT/s DDR3L (1.5V or 1.35V) modules. If you flash the modded bios (oleh's bios) it's unlocked to 1886MT/s
You can fit one standard 2,5" 7mm SSD/HDD inside and one mSATA 3Gbps SSD. If you dock it into ultrabase you get a ultrabay, which can hold another 2,5" 9,5mm drive.

>We both know this CPU can barely handle linux background activity, not to mention windows or running modern browser. So what do you need this full hd screen for?
Just to clear up any confusion, what do you mean "we"? I mean, the sole reason why I'm doing this, is because I thought to myself that modern computers are overrated and I can get by with a 10-15-years-old laptop when it comes to simple computation task such as; filling spreadsheets, browsing the internet, word processing, media consuming etc. Do you really think, you would need more than 1gb-2gb ram for those tasks? I mean our school has desktops running Win8 with only 2gb ram. Yet, I'm doing the same with 256mb ram.
>Modern browser
Define "modern". Sometimes, we can learn from the past. See IRC and why is it still being used. I mean, part of the fun of running old computers is to find solutions to these nonexistant problems which I'm currently having. But I figure, you wouldn't understand.
>So what do you need this full hd screen for?
For that screen estata because I plan to use this for heavy word processing and information lookup (intenet). Currently Midori is my top choice for a browser in this machine. I can prove you that I can replace my T61 with NC4010 because I can do the same things with it.

Turn on the x230 without eGPU connected, wait until windows logo shows up, at this point immediately connect egpu without external monitor connected. Wait until the login prompt and connect dp/hdmi cable from external monitor. That's it.

This is exactly what I do to get it to work with 8gb already. I boot with 12gb and it just hangs at POST if the expresscard's plugged in. Should I fiddle with the switches on my PE4C 3.0? What have you got them set to.
>>
>>60869212
It's still "native." It could be 10x worse! On an X230 it's plug and play if you do the trick with unplugging the monitor before turning on the laptop and subsequently plugging it back in once it reaches the desktop.

The new Mac eGPU stuff they've just come out with can't even display on the laptop's own display. Any nvidia eGPU on Windows (& perhaps linux? don't know.) can do that.

I have thought of buying either X60 or X61 because of libreboot. I think they are the best 12,5" sized laptops from that era. I mean this NC4010 can't even compete with X31 because of this weird keyboard. I mean the F-keys are way too small to be actually usable. Because X31 uses the same keyboard as seen in T30, I like the its keyboard way more.

But I have had my fair share of problems with these smaller machines that nowadays I would prefer T-series or W-series over X-series nowadays. Of course its always good to have experience with many computers of different sizes.

Nevetheless, its a cute little machine with all the feature you would expect from a Thinkpad. It surely gets shit done.

Alright, I tried each permutation of switch positions and while I didn't get the hang I would get under 12gb/screen plugged in/ all switches set to 0, I basically got code 12 every time, similar to if I just hotplugged in the card while windows were already running. I haven't tried permutations with the monitor plugged in but that seems like it would be pretty pointless (I guess? Perhaps I should try it.)

I don't have an SPI flasher and that's getting a bit too involved. When I visit home over the summer I might reassemble my (already mini-itx) desktop into something as small as possible (although my graphics card is stupidly over sized and 3 slot because I got it cheap on ebay and size wasn't relevant at the time) which kind of hinders that. If I did I'd sell my maxed out X230 and get an X301 for the comfyness of a pre - core i series which is less than 2cm thick but still sturdy as fuck. Then I could run something like Manjaro with BSPWM which has been my computing equivalent of retiring to a comfy house by the seaside since I had my T60p and X220.

X230 is basically what you want. It's surprisingly thin too, especially for a full 35w CPU with lots of extensibilty including space for a 2.5" HD and mSATA SSD. The IPS screen's completely satisfying for general graphics but by absolutely modern standards is a bit behind.

Take a look at either the T430, or Dell's E6430. With a quad-core and dGPU, of course. In this regard T430 might be your best option, I would suggest T530 but it's probably too heavy for your needs...

I have the backbone of an old man, is the X200 noticeably lighter than the T400?
>>
>>60877521

I have a T400 with a 2.26GHz P8400, 8GB of RAM, an HD3470, and an SSD.

For web browsing, writing, watching video, and shitposting on /g/ the C2D is still more than fine. The only downside is that it will be impossible to find replacement batteries for this machine at some point in the future.
>>
>>60876631
I have exactly 8GB of RAM.
>>
>>60880006
ramlet
>>
>>60880074
What do you do that warrants more than 8GB?

8GB is just enough for my work, which involves using 2 VMs at the same time, plus the main system.
>>
>>60880083
2x4GB VMs, gayming via eGPU, chrome with loads of tabs in the background + system takes 2GB. Of course there always needs to be free RAM if you want to keep swap disabled.
>>
>>60880108
Okay, my VMs only need 2GB.
>>
>>60880114
2GB each?
Even if we count 4GB of VMs, 2GB of system, 4GB max for chrome this leaves you 6GB, which is perfect for cache and some additional processes like gaymes.

>>
>>60880212
Which one is easier to repair with replaceable parts easily accessible? Which is more future proof(considering the upgradable processor in t420)?
>>
>>60880229
w7 uses even more RAM than w10 or w8.1
So 8GB must be painful to use.
>>60880207
Which one do you want? Bigger, smaller screen?
Both are equally repairable. x230 can be upgraded with ultrabase and 2nd/3rd hdd, it's easier to replace screen with full hd one and there is 1366x768 IPS option straight from the factory. Also keyboard can be easily replaced to T420 (superior) one.
T420 is older, has shitty CPU, can be in theory upgraded to quad core CPU but you're guaranteed to experience housefire effect.
Get x230

Maybe. Broadwell as fast as Sandy Bridge so if you're looking for an upgrade in power as well this isn't it really. But if you just want a better screen and speakers go ahead. Is it possible/worth it to put an ips panel in a T420? Equal or greater than the normal 1600x900 resolution. I have heard a few things about possibilties over the year. One involved losing your DisplayPort to powert the internal screen, and something about needing an extra long cable due to something being on the wrong side.
>>

My T420 had some thermal throttling issues last time I used it a few months ago. Just powered it on and ran a bunch of updates and such. I'm not seeing the messages in dmesg so far, but when I first turned it on, I did see something about thinkfan failing to start in the console. What should I look into to monitor temps? Also what range should I be in? Screenfetch says I'm at 62C right now. I think it was a bit lower earlier, but it hasn't gone up much in the last half hour or so.

Debian is a solid choice for any machine. Maybe you won't have the drivers for the wireless out of the box. In that case, after install, connect to internet with a cable, check with lspci the serial number of your wifi controller (BCM00000), check the right driver for that controller and install it usin the non-free repos.

It sound tedious, but it takes like five minutes.

A point that is commonly missed, all models of thinkpad, including high end ones, use a low frequency of 200hz strobing back light to change screen brightness.

it will fuck up your eyes, give you headaches, etc
>>
>>60884148
"220Hz is damn noticeable. What Lenovo refers to justifying such low PWM frequency are some old flicker-detection psychophysics studies. Indeed, 100Hz flicker was already hardly detectable. BUT those studies were about plain uniform untextured stimuli, subjects fixated at the center, no eye movements. Do we always look at a plain grey uniformly lit screens and freeze our eyes? I would suspect - no. People perform ~3 rapid eye movements (saccades) per second. During the saccade brain receives heavily smeared image, detects the blur and basically, shuts the visual input off (that's why you can't detect changes in the scene while moving your eyes!). This lasts like 0.1 sec. Basically, you visual system relaxes for 0.1 sec 3 times a sec.
Here comes the interesting thing how PWM affects this process. Low-frequency PWM means the visual system receives pulses of light, say 220 times/sec. These pulses destroy the usual blurring effect during the saccades. Instead of a smeared image, brain receives 20 sharp pulses. This completely breaks the inhibitory mechanism to suppress the visual input. This means, the visual system does not have those 0.1 sec breaks any more. It gets overused, overexcited, overstressed. People start feeling uncomfortable, but can't actually tell why. Sometimes they say that it is just sore eyes, or a headache. Sometimes they get visual seizures (like me).

TL;DR: low PWM affects everybody, some just don't understand what's wrong with them."

So, right now im thinking of buying a 2620QM for my t420.

I saw a redditor saying that after installing this heatsink http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine-Lenovo-Thinkpad-T420T420-Fan-Heatsink-04W0408/182179183543, he kinda solved throttling and extreme temp., going down from 95 to 80 under workload.

I know i should get the 90w A/C, and a good thermal paste too.

Anything else to consider?

Also, im in doubt about getting the 2820qm instead. Im going for the 2620qm because i expect it to generate less heat, and be more stable, but does anyone here can confirm this?

The old ones are easy to modify, these days the CPU`s are soldered on the frame aniway.

But yeah, low cost, lots of spare parts, sturdy enough to go to space, linux friendly, etc.

I need to swap the mouse keys from an old keyboard into this one because they are all three busted.

I want to get a budget laptop below 13 inches for work, browsing, light editing (inkscape) and playing shitty card games like gwent and hearthstone. Also to watch chinese cartoons.

My t420 handles hearthstone smoothly with dual-channel, but you should expect that aniway.

T420 can be upgraded to a quad-core, and you just need to get a decent thermal paste and the better heatsink, like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Genuine-Lenovo-Thinkpad-T420T420-Fan-Heatsink-04W0408/182179183543
