Are netbooks a good on the go computer for programming, and network admin type of job or is there something better outthere?

What's your opinion /g/?
>>
>>60847134
Programming probably not unless you're doing Hello World in C. Network admin might be ok.
>>
>>60847150
so what's another device that can is small and portable and can do the job and has multiple ports for programming and sysadmin?
>>
>>60847134
A thinkpad x220 is probably your best bet.
Good I/O
Good keyboard
Good battery life
Good portability
Pretty cheap atm
If you want something bigger, go for the t420
If your can easily outsource intensive tasks to a remote machine and want maximum portability check out the dragonbox pyra
>>
>>60847134
>>60848114
this
>better performance than netbook
>better io than netbook
>better keyboard than netbook
>better battery life than netbook
>as good portability than netbook
you also could get a X230 if you really want usb 3.0 but itll cost you just a bit more
>>
>>60848179
You can just toss a $5 ExpressCard in the x220
>>
>>60848258
those arent that good
>overheat like shit
>adds extra battery drainage
>not as fast as actual usb 3.0
though they do add extra ports
>>
>>60848315
They're still better than USB 2.0, and I never noticed mine getting hot nor a difference in battery life

>>
>>60848179
i7 x220 has usb3
>>
>>60848368
huh. Maybe its just the chinkshit ones then
>>60848386
which also may or may no go for more. sometimes as much as a x230
also it only has one usb 3.0 while the x230 has two
>>
>>60847134
Shit I thought this was the lemote yeeloong... it looks almost exactly the same, and I would know because I'm one of the few idiots who owns one.
>>
>>60850207
How much do you want for it? Would be neat to have a Lemote desktop and laptop.
>>
Are <13" laptops worth it if I've only ever used 15" laptops and find them the most comfy?
>>
Netbooks became deprecated as soon as the X220 became a thing.
>>
>>60847134
used mbpr
>>
>>60850679
Nah, my main laptop's 12", I've still got a netbook and UMPC for when I want something smaller.

I use a 10" Wintablet for field work. Does everything I need for networking jobs. I just had to buy a USB-ethernet adapter. I carry a lot of gear, so a tiny PC is nice.
>>
>>60847206
chromebook with linux?
macbook 12, but it ain't cheap
>>
>>60847150
Why? I routinely use the cheapest chromebook for programming (C, Coq, Ada) in work.
>>
>>60848114
Why the *20? I guess there's a point of diminishing returns, you wouldn't want a 270 or 470 unless you have a lot of money. But why the 20s and not the 30s, 40s or 50s?
>>
>>60851624
40s and newer are trash
>>
>>60851755
actually, 60/70 are good again, they have proper touchbad buttons

>t. T460 user
>>
>>60847134
If you want something smaller go with an ultrabook instead. Dell XPS 15 or X1 Carbon 5th Gen are both decent.
>>
>>60852050
>15" laptop
>small
>>
>>60852061
yeah my bad, I meant the 13.
>>
>>60852103
Still not comparable to a 10" netbook though
>>
>>60852148
Yeah well, the opposite can also be said. You can't have it both ways.
>>
>>60852164
Yes you can, nobody said to use the netbook as your main laptop. You use it for when you want something smaller.
>>
>>60847134
just buy a mi book air. you welcome
>>
>>60847134
Surface Pro 2
>>
Theres plenty of 11-12" notebooks out there, which are honestly better than netbooks, but a lot of them are not... great.

If you can score a Xaiomi Air or a decent chinkbook that might work.
>>
>>60851409
>hey guys look how many refurbished thinkpads i can buy
>macbooks they are way to expensive and shit anyway
>i'd rather buy more thinkpads and have multiple laptops for multiple purposes

god, you are the worst kind of consumer victim. why don't you straight up go to lenovo and shove their CEO's dick so deep your throat that it gets to swim in your gastric acid you fucking faggot
>>
>>60852175
No you can't. Netbooks are shit and there's no reason to get one instead of an ultrabook. Ultrabooks themselves are not workstations and don't replace a desktop either.
>>
>>60852229
Yes you can.
>Netbooks are shit
That's like your opinion, man.
>there's no reason to get one instead of an ultrabook
Wrong.
>Ultrabooks themselves are not workstations and don't replace a desktop either
I never said otherwise.
>>
>>60852204
They're bought used dude
>>
>>60852248
used or refurbished, same shit. you waste money on shit build quality, old hardware, shit battery life, while you could have just one device that is sufficient for a couple of years.

>>60852229
>books themselves are not workstations and don't replace a desktop either.
they do, i have one provided by the company i work for and i code on it and manage all systems from it, so does everyone in the company. your statement is pretty fucking dumb, please leave

Where are you going to that is "on the go"?
>>
>>60852520
networking equipment out in the field probably
Not OP but I'm a network admin for a carrier, some things can only done with physical proximity, like measuring the line (need to plug in the fluke) or unfucking a device (console access) or adding a member to a virtual chassis. A lot of these devices are also at construction sites.

At work we've all just got docking stations on the desk that we plug our netbooks into. We also need a LOT of USB on them, for extra NICs and often multiple serial adapters and also usb sticks for transferring software images and config data before the device is configured. I've got a x220 and I like it very much.
>>
>>60851624
>>60851986
Actually some people, we'll at least I recommend the xx30s if someone needs a bit more gpu horsepower
As for the rest xx40 and xx50 are slower than the xx30 and xx20 (thanks Intel for the ULV)
And the main reason we don't recommend the xx60/xx70 is price. When you stop by /tpg/ most people ask for sub 200 or cheap as possible or they're not gamers so the 20% performance increase for 800+ dollars for a xx70 isn't all too appealing
That and older thinkpads are more reliable
>>
>>60852103
Yeah it isn't with the at best dual core atom

get a tiny light notebook that weighs less than 2-3 pounds and is well balanced, that gives 3-4 hours of battery. That is a 220-320 netbook.

Netbooks are just fine, but get something that can support two monitors if you need it. After a few years you will cave and get a macbook because it is all the speed, battery, monitor, durability, and extendability you need- but first you need to carve yourself out a few raises using shit netbooks.
>>
>>60855706
You could get a Latitude 2120 that a school used for only like $40, but those have huge bezels around the 10" screen so aren't much smaller really.

Kek, macs are for fags.
Plus I get 10 fucking hours of battery on this, and it was damn cheap too.
Being very reliant on the command line actually helped me a lot, since most of what I do isn't computationally intensive.

Do the 40s and 50s have better battery time then? They should need 20W less under load. Aren't the batteries interchangeable/the same?
>>
>>60857444
The xx40s have marginally better battery while the xx50s should be a good amount more better. I don't know whether they're interchangeable. Though I think lenovo dropped things like slice batteries which gave the xx30 and xx20 a real advantage in battery life
>>
>>60858735
They look pretty cool, but seem kinda expensive.

>>
>>60854794
i actually don't own a mac but here's the thing. you literally waste money on shit that performs shit is outdated and has shit quality. the only good thing left on thinkpads is that some can be maintained by yourself (opening them up, changing parts), instead of throwing them straight away. other than that, they are getting shittier by each year and unfixable.

and collecting laptop is literally the dumbest shit ever, but i guess if you are autistic you need to do buy shit
>>
>>60851587

you know the type of people who talk just to talk but do so in such a brazen, authoritative way that it makes you question even the most common sense choices and beliefs.

well...

It's a hobby
Some people collect stamps
Some people install gentoo
And some people collect technology. It's not good or bad it's just something people do

Also one more thing

You don't know if this is all he has
As far we know he could be just throwing extra cash into something he likes
>>
>>60847134
$50 craigslist chromebook if you don't give a fuck about anything

Thinkpad if you value /g/'s opinion

Macbook Air if you want something top of the line and to show off at starbucks.
>>
>>60854716
>>60855735
Don't fall for the Linux on Chromebook meme, it's just a pita and not worth any time and effort
>>
Lenovo Thinkpad or Surface pro 2

Never used a Mac and don't want to, and it's way to expensive so don't know about that
>>
>>60866563
Works well on my machineā„¢
Heck, even installing Libreboot was easy!
