Wizards assemble !

Advanced users of GNU/Linux (and I mean advanced), remember to try Source Mage GNU/Linux. True source-based distribution, and (in contrast with Gentoo and Arch) is:
Free from obfuscated and pre-configured code.
Fully committed to GPL, uses only free software (as in freedom) in their main package.
With even the documentation licensed as FDL.
Without 3rd party patches, sensible defaults or masked packages.
Doesn't need obfuscated python libraries, only bash.
Uses clean dependencies as they came from upstream developers, which by the same provides instant updates.
Can heal broken installs.
Can also use flags.

Do you like Arch Linux's AUR? Do you like Gentoo's portgage (or ports-like) package manager? With SMGL's "sorcery" you get all that. Making new spells (packages) not found in the grimoire (repository) is easy http://sourcemage.org/Spell/Book

Bash hackers welcome! Come and join http://sourcemage.org/

first off, share pape
then, uninstall as much as nonfree software as possible (vrms may help, but isn't reliable)
then install urxvt and customize you terminal colors (or use wal, which generates a colorscheme based on your wallpaper)
then install synaptic, dont use the software centre
then install i3-wm, you can select in from your login screen later
then try to compile your first program: i3-gaps, and install it
then get comfy, learn the shell, avoid installing stupid frameworks, instead read the copypasta colelction in the OP
discover the systemd, find your personal favorite programs
try to actually understand how apt works
youre ready for distro hopping, come back when doe

So yesterday I finally installed Gentoo.

Took me three tries because I was trying something weird at first and the bootloader did not like it.

I was trying to install it in another hard drive, /dev/sdb1, but I had another OS in /dev/sda1. I could not get the bootloader from /dev/sda to load /dev/sdb1. Also because I put the kernel for gentoo in /dev/sdb1 instead of what the guide suggested to put it in /dev/sdb2 as /boot.

Though, not it works after I resized /dev/sda1 and feels comfy!

Anything else I should do? maybe start moving to BSD?

-- is a gnu standard like --help or --version, etc, it means "This is the end of all arguments" and makes things like
touch -- --no-preserve-root
possible

It is actually useful when you have retarded filenames that start with an '-' and you want to remove it. Then you run (to remove the previously created (touched) file:
rm -- --no-preserve-root

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

About 5 years behind firefox at any given time. Plus qutebrowser crashes if you go on sites like 'guardian.co.uk'. Plus, it's basically a ripoff of firefox addons like Vimpterpretor. The only project has only got like 1 active developer on any given day. For these reasons I would avoid qutebrowser and stick to firefox with whatever addons suit your purpose. If you delve into qutebrowser you're going to come out the other end disappointed. Qutebrowser is basically vaporware: No private browsing mode, no settings manager or commands to set up proxies, no ASM.js, no 'noScript' or similar addons. The only thing it's got going for it is its keyboard shortcuts, small UI and 'config' file, but all three of those features can be achieved in firefox by a vim addon (where qutebrowser steals its sourcecode) and the 'Stylish' addon.

>>

"sudo" simply runs the command as administrator(root). apt(of which apt-get is an interface with certain features) is the package manager(software installer).
First question, is skype available on the ubuntu repos?
If it is and you can't find, then it's probably on a repo that you don't have enabled. Open the "software sources" or something like that, and enable proprietary/third-party repos.

You can also use apt search or apt-cache search to search for skype. The name it's under might not be exactly "skype".

Just look up some tutorials on youtube. Basic terminal commands are not hard.

Arch was my second distro. I installed it after about 2-3 months of using GNU/Linux and I also didn't know almost anything. True, back then there was a Beginner's Guide section at the Arch wiki which guided you through the install process like you're 10 years old. Nowadays the install guide is still fairly straightforward but I think it's a bit confusing to the new users.
But you can always just practice in a VM. if you fuck something up, just reset and try again. You'll be fine.
>>
>>60850610
If you are a beginner it's probably better to use the Software Center, at least for searching.
You can also search through the terminal with the apt command. Just type "apt search package-name" and it will list all packages with that name. Then just use "sudo apt install package-name" to install it.

The point of GNU/Linux is software freedom. Sure Adobe probably can port Photoshop and other crapware over here, and we can in theory get all the Windows programs, but that would be a disaster.
The point is to have free alternatives. The point is to have GIMP, Krita, Ardour, LMMS, LibreOffice, Mumble, Tox, even if they have less features than the propertiary programs.
GNU/Linux is not just about having or not having Skype or Photoshop. If you want Adobe or other non-free programs, use Windows or MacOS. In this community we value freedom.

Adobe software on GNU/Linux would be a disaster because Adobe programmers are a bunch of clueless codemonkeys straight outta Mumbai.

Microsoft PAID Adobe massive amounts of cash so that they would sit and make Adobe products work on Windows properly because It was fucking plagued with problems.

Just imagine what kind of job they would do if suddenly decided that supporting a 2.5% share of desktop users would be great idea. Absolutely horrible.

Security in minimal stand-alone browsers like qutebrowser depends a lot what the browser is based on. None (I hope?) of those browsers implement their own rendering, but they use some kind of library - so it boils down to whether that's up-to-date.

In the case of qutebrowser, you can use it with either QtWebEngine which is based on Chromium or QtWebKit (which is based on an up-to-date upstream WebKit, if you use the updated version of it).

So apart from things like UI security bugs (which are rare, and also happen in the big browsers), its security is equal to Chromium's essentially (with the QtWebEngine backend).

>>60848593
> About 5 years behind firefox at any given time.

Bullshit.

> Plus qutebrowser crashes if you go on sites like 'guardian.co.uk'.

Works fine for me. If it's a segfault, that's a bug in the backend you're using and not qutebrowser itself. If you use legacy QtWebKit, well, don't.

> The only project has only got like 1 active developer on any given day.

A big difference to big browsers is that qutebrowser doesn't have its own rendering or network stack - it uses either QtWebKit or QtWebEngine for that, which have dozens of full-time developers working on them.

> Qutebrowser is basically vaporware: No private browsing mode

It does since April 2014.

> no settings manager

:set shows you a page with all settings; since November 2014.

I dunno, you must live in the past. ":set network proxy", May 2014.

Works fine with the QtWebEngine backend; probably going to come soon with QtWebKit: https://webkit.org/blog/7691/webassembly/

> no 'noScript' or similar addons.

Whoa, at least something that's true. Going to change in a few weeks though, at least for NoScript-like functionality.

> in firefox by a vim addon (where qutebrowser steals its sourcecode)

Umm... sure?
I only know of 2 versions of vim packaging: vim and gvim (gvim package has an additional GUI version of vim).

There's a billion visual vim learning resources online, even game-like tutorials. I don't remember how I learned vim, but it wasn't through one of those.

I can offer some advice:
1) For packaging, use vim-plug. It's the latest and greatest.
2) Start learning and using cool moves as early as possible. Like dd to delete a line (or cc to change a line), and many many more. It's the best part of vim and make you faster at performing the monotonous editing tasks.
3) Don't sweat the hjkl navigation. Arrow keys are fine too.

You've done it, /fglt/. I unironically, literally cringe IRL now when someone mentions "open source" or "Linux" and have to actively calm myself down lest I burst into a rant on why software freedom is more than just freedom 1, and why it's (usually) GNU/Linux they're referring to.
Hope you're happy.

It's super easy to write a Live iso to a usb flash drive. Just open up the terminal and type in lsblk to identify the name of the drive (you can tell which it is by the size, eg is it a 4gb drive?) then use the dd command along with the sync command with root prvileges to write the iso to the drive.

you need to change the thermal paste, clean the fan and apply some oil on the rotational ax

temperature should be something like 50 deg

if i'm not wrong, your chipset might or might not be locked to an i3 generation cpu. if it's not, that particular architecture is socketed, so you can actually upgrade to an i7 and with a bios update or depending on the chipset to an ivy bridge also

both used the G2 upgradable socket and the price is something like $20 for second hand mobile ivy bridges

so today while i was off at work my parents texted me saying they had a bunch of problems with the internet. so i tried to access my rutorrent online but couldn't connect and then i tried to ssh in and also could not connect. im dont really know if rtorrent was causing the problems and ive left it alone plenty of times before without any trouble, but im still a little worried that it may be a bit to aggressive so i want to do something about it. also it seems like a pretty good idea anyways

right now I allow connection through a tor hs only for both the ssh server and rutorrent because of the nat-punching abilities and because i already have tor connected 99% of the time anyway, so i figure some kind of shut-off could be based on that

tl;dr: how hard would it be to write a script that tells rtorrent to pause all traffic if tor doesn't say that it is connected, and then start seeding and stuff again once the connection is fine? i have no real programming experience

NO IM NOT TORRENTING OVER TOR AND THIS IS NOT A QUESTION ABOUT TORRENTING OVER TOR ONLY SSH TRAFFIC AND THE WEB UI IS GOING OVER TOR

This is probably a non-free firmware issue. The default installer doesn't ship with any nonfree firmware, and the default apt sources.list only has the free repos enabled.

The easiest way to solve this is to not bother solving it in the installer. Plug in an ethernet cable, install Debian, then edit sources.list to enable to nonfree repos, apt update and install your firmware, restart.

Hi, I have been looking for this for a long time, but even google-fu can't help me because I don't know how to ask it, so I come here hoping someone will understand:

I want my debian PC to automount a drive when I connect it and it recognizes said drive from a list of GUIDs. What command/what system part keeps track of what is connected? I could run a cronjob every minute, but that seems too slow. How do YOU do it?

>I just don't wanna mount manually, pls halp
>>
>>60862335
Nevermind, found it, maybe someone else will find it useful:

>Pointless competition, dozens of distros, dozen of DE, dozen of same softwares doing the same shit, the already small userbase will fight each other over those soft
This is called customisation. If you don't like KDE, you start developing XFCE. It's not "competition".
>Most softwares are subpar compared to their professional counterpart
What does this have to do with Linux? Nobody forces you to use GNU Octave, you can just buy Mathematica!
>Community is shit. Elitists nerds thinking they're the top of their class. Most of the time it's just hobbyist
Not the hole community, but some are shit, that's right.

>>60848574
Arch is for people comfortable with pacman. I have about 4 years user experience with deb-based systems, I could use Arch, but I have way too many "addictions" for me to move over. I am used to apt-get install everything. Pacman just seems too different for me. Once you start with ubuntu, be ready to stick with debian, if you want to use Arch, start with arch. Took me about 4 hours installing it and getting wifi and USB with only a friend on the phone and no internet connection. 10/10 would do again because since that day I never had problems setting up wireless.

Not mine, that stays virtually always the same because I have a certain work that gets done better with it.

>No support, you're alone

>No userbase, and scaterred among dozen of distros and DE
You have a userbase for each of the programs you use. Granted, uzbl has shit support, but then again it's so niche it may as well not exist.
>Pointless competition, dozens of distros, dozen of DE, dozen of same softwares doing the same shit, the already small userbase will fight each other over those soft
Or they will work together as seen here. If I know the answer, I'll help.
>It's no longer faster or stable than windows
Sure, but linux still boots faster and shuts down like a bar full of rats.
>Most softwares are subpar compared to their professional counterpart
People still develop commercial software, so this point is null. If you really must have it, buy it.
>Community is shit. Elitists nerds thinking they're the top of their class. Most of the time it's just hobbyist
That's the arch pleb talking inside you, Debian stronk

I'm pulling a total brain-fart right now.

I just re-installed Solus after floating a few distros on my laptop and for some reason it will only install Ruby 2.2.4, updated and upgraded all packages and it still only pulls 2.2.4.

Anyone have any suggestions?
