So I've got a bit of an issue

I'm mid-transfer of 15TB of storage between servers, and rsync crashed. For whatever reason when I restart the transfer instead of continuing rsync attempts to overight the already existing files.

I've retried with the --checksum command; and I just sat here for over 2 hours waiting while I thought it was hashing all my files.

It transfered one(1) 8GB .mkv and stopped.

Is there any better way to do this?

Do y'all recommend putting your Home directory on a separate partition/harddrive?

How much of a headache is it to fix if, say, the Home directory harddrive dies and I boot up the machine with a fresh unformated harddrive while the root system drive is functional? if you OS is the same or newer, there should be no serious problems. Programs will upgrade their own config files to the new versions
If you OS however older (let's say you used the latest ubuntu then switched to debian stable) you'll have problems with newer config files.
>>
>>60841805
>Do y'all recommend putting your Home directory on a separate partition/harddrive?
Absolutely, I have no clue why installers for beginners don't mention it as "recommended".
If you want to change distributions, keep home and just install a new one.
If you fuck something up, you can reinstall and keep home and your files.

>Or vice versa if the root system drive dies and I reinstall the distro on a new drive and try to pair it with my existing Home harddrive?
During installation you just select the existing Home drive and set it mountpoint at /home. The system does the rest.

Is there a reason elementary os isn't listed in the wiki for baby's first distro?
I understand it is based on Ubuntu which is one of the recommended dpkg-based distros and that it kind of locks things down a little bit for security (can't install some apps without first installing something else...)
I really like the look of elementary os out of the box, but I'm wondering if it might be better to just use Debian and tweak it to make it look like elementary os.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux" distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

do you know what a firmware is? it's a program that you send to an hardware device. for example, you upload a firmware to the dvd reader which will then execute that firmware with its own cpu.

another example are GPUs, you send the firmware to the gpu which will execute it on its own cpu.

it's not running in the kernel, the kernel only send/upload the firmware as data to the concerned hardware.
>>
>>60844725
im not wrong though

open = source

libre/foss = compiler instructions ect and ability to modify or redistributer

they dont even provide the source in these instances so therefore the hardware manufacturing companies arent open let alone foss/libre

Hello /g/ood friends. What distro does working people use? I'm an Arch user currently but I just gained employment and am working about 58 hours a week and am too busy and tired to update frequently and I don't really want to deal with any critical bugs which will inevitably happen. Anyways what do working anons use? NEETs need not reply.

alright, here's the deal
i've tried and succeeded at cobbling together a shell script to replace pasystray
It works as I expected it to work, but I'm looking for someone to take a look at it and point out obvious mistakes.
I'm completely fucking green when it comes to this and I'd like it to be as efficient as possible.

Script has two parts. I wanted volume controls and mute controls for Pulseaudio output but most importantly something to tell me what the current volume is and whether it's muted or not. I achieved that through a gdbus call. I'm more interested in the shell part itself.

Apologize for pastebin, 4swamp doesn't let me post it in code blocks for some reason

I've been trying all the DEs for Ubuntu and can't decide on one.

I'm on an XFCE boot right now and its simple and stable, but really really old fashioned and ugly looking.

But the majority of people on /r/unixporn seem to be using xfce? How are they "ricing" it?

The best I've found is MATE cos everything was configurable out of the box and tweakable. That's what I imagined it to be like. I'm guessing xfce and the others are configurable if you have the magic know-how.

this

the "unix" meme is cancer, people who refer to linux as unix have no fucking idea whats going on, there is so much wrong with it

there are 2 things which are "unix"

- the proprietary original unix system from the 70s
- the UNIX trademark, people slap on their os when there's enough money (macOS is an example)

furthermore,
linux is a kernel, which isn't unix nor UNIX
gnu is (literally) not unix nor UNIX, it's rewritten from scratch and it's called GNU
bsd is not unix nor UNIX it's rewritten from scratch and it's called BSD

somehow, when people say "unix" they refer to "gnu, bsd, macos, etc" - why are people unable to name the things they are talking about?

all these unix, *nix, linux memes need to go back to omgubuntu

The name GNU's Not Unix is a tongue in cheek to refer that GNU doesn't contain any Unix code that would get them in serious legal trouble with AT&T or whoever was the rights holder to Unix at the time.

macOS's (which is unix according to sus and the cuckstamp apple paid for) kernel is called XNU. Guess what XNU stands for you dummy.

GNU/Linux is *nix. It was made as a replacement, an improvement and to behave the same way.

Calling GNU/Linux Unix or *nix is as much of a mistake as not saying calling it just "Linux"

Gnome is highly unorthodox.
You can call it unusable shit all you want but to say it's windows 8 would be a proper insult.

Gnome is the result of them taking into consideration "how a desktop environment should look like if we didn't have any but we knew all we know about them today".
Human ergonomics were taken into consideration. That's why it has massive fucking titlebars for example.
What they forgot to take into consideration is the fact that we (humans) had and used desktop environments for almost 30 years already. It's hard to just forget everything you know and learn something else.

Oh and they forgot that people liked desktop linux for it's lightweightness. I absolutely despise how fucking bloated and slow it is.
It would've helped them quite a lot if it was light. People would be more eager to try it out.
But when you face a choice between something like Xfce which offers you a traditional desktop you already know at minimal resources usage vs a flamboyant faggotry that requires a minimum of 4G of ram, a quad core CPU, a 1440p display and an SSD for something you may not even end up liking the choice was obvious.

You appear to have used a tripcode when posting, but your identity has nothing at all to do with the conversation! Whoops! You should always remember to stop using your tripcode when the thread it was used for is gone, unless another one is started! Posting with a tripcode when it isn't necessary is poor form. I just hope the devs that dropped unity in favor of this help with the codebase to make it slimmer and add shit like global menus

Is there some lazy way to write Cyrillic on MATE only on certain circumstances? I've been using pluma modes for that (right click, select encoding or something like this), but an update killed my approach.
>>
>>60846722
cool I guess, I just want to help people in any way I can. That's why I started tripfagging, not for attentionwhoring. I've spent the entire day on (Insert search engine here) trying to solve this but its all AMD/Nvidia GPUs

Meh.

By itself the usage of tripcode isn't that bad... if justified, something it is not in this case.
>>
>>60846772
Just don't respond to them
Never try to deal with tripfags directly, call anyone else who responds to them a faggot.

This is the only tried and true method.
>>
>>60846789
tripcodes are invented so op can prove his identity, its not made to have a "4chan identiy"
>>
>>60846744
If it is just utf8, you can use the same encoding everywhere and add the keys to your keyboard with xmodmap.

I accidentally dun g00fed a lil bit guys.

I'm running Mint and I wanted to install Ubuntu Software Center, because Mint doesn't really have one. The "Software Manager" is a poor substitute IMO.

Anyways, I found instructions on how to do it so, I edited the lsb-release file and just changed 'linux mint' to 'ubuntu' on the DISTRIB ID= line.

So now, screenfetch at least thinks I'm running Buntu while I'm actually running Mint, which I don't dig.

Consequently, I tried to edit the text again in the lsb file, but now it's "read only" and I can't edit it even as root nor with Nano. WTF?

Tasukete senpai!

Can someone let me know where the Steam icon is supposed to be stored?

I'm on a new install and it seems like it didn't get added.
If I recall though it's supposed to be somewhere in ~/.local/share/icons
>>
>>60846847
You don't want the software center. It's maybe the worst program ever developed. Get synaptic instead. Also consider switching away from Mint later. It's a horrible distro. Ubuntu, Debian or Debian are good alternatives.
>>
>>60846817
Is there a way to xmodmap a whole mode? For example "press a key and get Cyrillic; press it again and get Latin"?

Because it's the most out-of-the-box distro. I've tried a few debian-based distros and Mint just runs the best, with the least amount of problems.
>>
>>60845526
I use Fedora and work 45-50 hours/week. I'm switching to Debian Stretch with backports when it is released. Not a fan of RPMFusion at all.

But if you don't need multimedia support then fedora is great, never had an issue and I update once a week on weekends.
>>
>>60846889

Maybe so but I ain't no programmer. When the terminal fails to find a program I'd rather just search for it anc click install, instead of hunting individual packages from a boring list of random mumbo-jumbo.
>>
>>60846911
Easy: Mint is the #1 distro according to distro watch's click counter.

No, Linus, it's GNU/Linux. You're weird definition of operating system won't change that fact.
