The little GPS chips in your phone and such do not transmit anything. They are receivers only. Buy a cheap gsm tracker, there are literally hundreds.

Ok thanks, the reason I ask is because I also wondered if there was a technology that can spot a GPS receiver, just like there is some device that can spot a hidden microphone or camera, but I admit not knowing at all how that works.

A simple radio beacon would be a better choice, since you're not actually using the GPS coordinates for anything. Battery life will be a problem of similar scale in either case, same for detection by someone else. Even better is taking a picture of something that doesn't change, like a rock formation or two visible from where you're burying the stolen money/guns/drugs/skeletons. You don't want the cache visible in the photo, just the general vicinity with some memorable landmarks so you can line them up when you go back. Make up a story about a religious epiphany in that spot or whatever, childhood hiking trip or something, to justify the picture if anyone asks. Don't be weird about it though, don't shove the lie in anyone's face. Be reluctant to talk about it. Never, ever let a law enforcement officer see the photo.

I think there's a reason why people still use fairly expensive products that output high frequency signals to trace cables.
