I'm gonna put Gentoo on my new computer when I get it, any recommended wms and why? What does yours look like?

Google doesn't fucking help

It's a matter of a personal preference.

If you like manual tiling, herbstluftwm is pretty nice. You split into frames, which can be filled with windows. Each frame can arrange its windows as columns and rows.

Configured using another command, herbstluftclient, and runs a script called autostart when it starts to configure it. herbstluftclient -i can listen for hooks, which you can have used in a case statement to update things like statusbars. It's pretty nice.

Just xterm and xclock

i3wm because it's a good, popular tiling window manager. I use i3pystatus so I can get bandwidth usage (and other stuff) in i3bar.

I haven't spent as much time as I want tweaking the color values but whatever.

You really shouldn't try Gentoo for your first linux. Don't listen to the memes.
>>
>>60835017
He didn't say anywhere that it was his first.

>Doesn't know about wms
>Doesn't know how to google about them
Yeah not his first time at all.
>>
>>60835056
Or he just hasn't been using them because he's been using a DE?

Using a DE doesn't automatically make you retarded or new to linux. It just means you wont be familiar with all of the WM options.

DWM is the only wm worth your time
>>
>>60834827

Ratpoison is nice, very nice. The default keys are easy to get addicted to, has scripting capability beyond anything you see, the tiling is godlike, the low resource usage is impressive too. Using dmenu complements very well.

Here is my config file
bind e exec gjots2
bind E exec xterm -e vim

bind y exec iceweasel
# highlight an url in a window and the url is opened in a new tab
bind Y exec iceweasel -new-tab `$RATPOISON -c getsel`

bind o exec xterm -e mocp
bind O exec xterm -e aumix

bind d exec spacefm
bind D exec xterm -e ranger

bind g exec liferea
bind G exec xterm -e newsbeuter

bind h exec xterm -e irssi
bind H exec xterm -e mutt

bind j exec lyx
bind J exec calibre

bind z exec ~/jd2/JDownloader2
bind Z exec keepassx

# expose switch window
bind comma exec ~/bin/expose.pl

#as colon invoke ratpoison commands, semicolon invoke shell commands
bind semicolon exec

#no startup message announcing what the prefix key is
startup_message off

#change font, color and position for messages
set font "Fixed-11"
set fgcolor gray
set bgcolor black
set bargravity c

#normal cursor
exec xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr

#to fix java swing, install wmname (suckless)
exec wmname LG3D

#multiple workspaces (from F1 to F4)
exec rpws init 4 -k

#get rid of the one pixel border around windows
set border 0

Not my pic but if you absolutely want to see how it is https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45j3B8ZWG8c
>>
>>60834827
Just use x11.
>>
>>60834827
Live in emacs, and wm is irrelevant.

If you don't have time to lose: i3 was the deal for me
