why is emacs so shit? this is the same font (Courier Prime) in emacs and vscode. can I change letter-spacing in emacs like I would with "editor.letterSpacing" in vscode if the font were fucked (which it isn't)?

by applying "Auto Width" to the font in fontforge

Looks like you're using emacs in a terminal. The issue is likely to come from the terminal rather than emacs. If you're using xterm/urxvt, there's a setting you can change to correct font spacing.I can't remember its name though.
