not really a valid argument, considering you can switch DEs at any time. also can do the Debian minimal install and choose your own DE without it preinstalling GNOME. It's kind of like the Debian-Arch.

I love Debian and started using at Bo, but it did have a shitty release cycle. Ubuntu added a lot to Debian which came back, such as polish, improved installer, hardening.
I think the Debian/Ubuntu relationship has produced the best Linux platform.
