>How to assemble a PC, select components & more. (somewhat outdated)
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Build_a_PC

CPUs:
>G4560 - budget builds (<$500) unless G4600/G4620/i3-7100 is heavily discounted
>R5 1500x - generally all you need for 60fps with power to spare. No i5
>R5 1600 - best value for higher fps gaming & mixed usage; 1600x if you too lazy to OC
>i7-7700k - bad value but good for higher FPS; may have heat issues
>R7/Xeon/Threadripper/i9 - compute/Multitask/mixed use

Graphics:
>G4560 iGPU is fine for desktop stuff and very light game
>1050Ti for low budget. Drop settings if not Freesync/Gsync on newer games; RX560 if discounted <$90
>RX570 4GB - 1080p@60+hz, running most maxed; older games at 144+hz
>RX580 8GB - 1440p@60+hz, inject SMAA & drop settings
>1060 - Generally outperformed by the RX 580 and GSync costs more; consider if AMD is not an option (ie CUDA/miners buying all RX570s)
>1070 - if on heavy sale-ish
>1080 - 1080p@100-144+hz maxed; 1440p at lower hz.
>1080Ti - 1440p@90-144+hz; 4k@60hz in SOME games, more at lower settings

General:
>READ PRODUCT REVIEWS to see if that cheap SSD/PSU or whatever is reliable
>Consider larger SSD-only for what you budget SSD+HDD combined. Add HDD later once needed
>NVMe aren't for faster OS boot. They're primarily for productivity/scratch disk/VMs
>Stop confusing any M.2 drive with NVMe. M.2 is a form factor
>mATX board + case is often cheaper
>1 SR DIMM is slower than 2 DIMMs

Check benchmarks and reviews
Which card in particular are you interested in?
Also remember that even with factory OCs most GPUs perform the same no mather the manufacturer, at least without extra overclocking
>>
>>60818502
I already screwed up back in november with a MSI RX 480 8gb, Thinking of a Nvidia GTX 1080Ti this november or sale but don't know what brand. I like ASUS but I mostly see EVGA getting the good reviews.
>>
So I'm planning on upgrading soon, my plan so far is:

R5 1600 CPU
Supernova 650W
16GB DDR4
And some cryorig cooler, maybe H5?

I've been looking at the 580s but you jews >>60818146 >>60818127 have depleted that supply in minutes, so I'm planning on bumming a holdover card from a friend's old build and waiting for Vega.

I'd like any good recommendations on:

Case - Just going to do air cooling for now
RAM - Brand and speed for a ryzen 1600 (I heard g.skill was the best and high speed, a la 3200)
Mobo - Brand/type. Not sure which version to go with - I will be overclocking as well.
Monitor - 144Hz, pref. with Freesync for the Radeon cards. Something along lines of 24", 1080p. I'll jump to 4k when prices of those go down.

Thank you. Also fuck 580 hoarders and miners.

saving up for a ryzen gaming pc (gpu preferably 570/580, but will most likely be gtx 1060 6GB). What's a good value monitor, /g/? I've read that you shouldn't scrimp on a monitor, since it'll last much much longer than the pc.

TN 144Hz or IPS 60Hz?
4K or not?

Personally I think that 24" 60FPS is plenty. But will gaming be more enjoyable on a >27" >60FPS?
Thanks
>>
>>60818525
I will sell one to you for 400 bucks. No need to salty.
>>
>>60818523
EVGA is good because of customer service, even if your card fails you quickly get a new one.
>>60818550
1060 can't do 4K so no
Get an IPS 60hz unless you play a lot of esports games, then buy a TN, tho those are the only games you will be able to play with very high framerates.
>>
>>60818550
IPS > TN unless you play a lot of twitch shooters and need that high response rate.
>>
>>60818550
Higher Hz looks better but requires a better graphics card. 4K looks great but for 60fps you need something along the lines of a 1080.

A very safe bet is to get a 144Hz 24" for now with freesync or gsync and upgrade to a 4k when prices come down for both those monitors AND capable video cards, at which point you convert your 24" into a second screen for random tasks outside of gaming like managing your voice comms or looking at porn.

>>60818564
Not a chance in Hell will I be jewed up THAT much. GL on Ebay.
>>
Any good monitors out there for under $150?
>>
>>60818585
>or looking at porn
If you have a 4k screen, you watch 4k porn. It is a game changer.
But I agree, 5 years down the road, a good quality IPS will still have resale value unlike the rest of your build.
>>
>>60818602
Someone posted a decent acer 24" acer IPS yesterday. IIRC they are under 150 and pretty good.

Get one of these, pussy

Also 650W is overkill for your plans. You really only need 400. 550 will give you more than you need in case you think you may need more later.
M12II, 550RM, and 650RM were both on sale the past few days. Maybe they still are.
>>
>>60818603
Someday friend I will reach the heavens of 4k porn but today is not this day.

But I'm just talking hypothetically if he's using it as a 2nd monitor for gaming. Prices for all that 4k stuff are quite high right now.
>>
>>60818565
Well who would be best performance wise?
>>
>>60818667
I have a 27" monitor and I think it is already atrociously large. I am not able to screen pan in some games because of it. I doubt I will ever use 4k in my PC. TV yes. PC? Nah. 1440p is as large as I will go.

144Hz 24", so a TN? I've looked around and there's no IPS panel with that spec. There are 27" 144Hz though. (> $600)

Also:
- Will it be ok to use your 144Hz monitor to run 60fps games yearlong (or whatev years until you upgrade your gpu)?
- Will you get neck pain programming on a 27" monitors or above? (I guess you can sit further back, but isn't that the same thing as getting a smaller monitor?)

>>60818738
>Will it be ok to use your 144Hz monitor to run 60fps games yearlong
Yes. To my knowledge all monitors let you see the frequency limit. Most 144 monitors have an option to limit it to 60, 120, 144. And some even let you overclock it to 165.

>- Will you get neck pain programming on a 27" monitors or above?
I can't help you here. This is personal preference and style.
>>
>>60818738
IPS vs TN is a big ol' debate that boils down to what you want the monitor for. For stuff like video/photo editing where the color richness matters, IPS is the go to. For stuff where the fps matters, you want the higher Hz of a TN so you can get the godly 144Hz. It makes a difference and once you go up to 144 you won't want to go back especially if you add on freesync/gsync.

But an IPS due to the innate picture quality will last you a long time IF you switch to a newer monitor and use the IPS as a secondary - you won't need that high Hz anymore and will care more about picture quality.
>>
>>60818146
Nobody with a brain is going to buy a used GPU after a mining boom. We know it's been tortured 24/7 for god knows how long.
>>
>>60818802
I'd also like to add TN panels are generally cheaper being older tech.
>>
>>60818802
Some of the high end IPS monitors have sub 5ms response time as well which makes them usable for FPS and gaming which limits TN to if you are playing twitch shooters. So take that into account when choosing an IPS monitor if you decide to get one.

Make sure your 570 is properly inserted and powered.

Ryzen ft. coreboot/libreboot when?
>>
I'm looking at building a new PC to upgrade from the gaymen PC I built back in 2013 with an i5 3570K and a HD7850, but I'm on a tight budget but I don't want to skimp on the CPU since I'm going to use the PC more for Lightroom/Premiere/Ableton Live than gaymen so I want to get at least a Ryzen 1600.

Is it better to buy the PC in parts or just get a PC now with a cheapo CPU and GPU, like the Ryzen 1400 and RX560/Geforce 1050, and upgrading them in a year or two? Right now I'm using a Thinkpad X230 as my main PC so any quad core desktop CPU will perform better than this, so I don't want to get an Intel dual core since the upgrade path for Ryzen is better with its 6 and 8 core CPUs, but Ryzen 3 isn't going to arrive for a while.

Should I just wait for Ryzen 3?

>>
>>60821480
Both the 1400 and 560 / 1050 would most likely perform slightly worse than what you currently have.
Get a 1600 and keep your GPU until you get the money for a new one is what i'd recommend considering the productivity you do.

wat? An R9 290, at least overclocked or a 290X, is largely better than a Keplar Titan.

On some musics if i try to change the volume the sound just completely stops and i have to disable & enable the peripheral or change any setting in the audio drivers for it to work again. Also happens if i try to play different musics really fast (browsing a playlist to find a specific song). Also got a blue screen from changing the volume multiple times on one music that would cut off the sound completely everytime i changed it. Even after a new windows install it didn't change anything. Strangely enough this happens only if i have the hi-fi mode non-enabled, which means i'm forced to have it enabled which prevents me from touching anything in the equalizer

I switched RAM sticks to the two other slots on my motherboard because the amount of Mhz wasn't right, I took them out without any problem, however the moment I wanted to push them in again it was near impossible.

I tried pushing them in and applying just a little bit of pressure but I couldn't get it in both sides at once.
I tried a couple of times, took them out and put them in again a couple of time then I tried applying more pressure on one side, then make it click, and then the other side.
This worked, but the motherboard had bent quite a bit. (I kept it all in the case, just put the computer on the side)
I started the PC and it wen't fine, but the issue was still there so I put them back again.

So I unplug the PC again, put it on the side, remove side cover, remove ram sticks and try to put them in the other ram slots again.
This went even more difficult, I eventually got them to click in too though but not without having the motherboard bent quite a bit again.
(It bent back eventually as far as I can see from here, so it's pretty much straight again I guess)

The computer starts but I have no idea if this could have damage anything?
It's one of the first times I do this with a computer, sorry for the stupid question.

>>60822460
>I switched RAM sticks to the two other slots on my motherboard because the amount of Mhz wasn't right
It most likely isn't and that wouldn't solve anything regardless

it could damage but generally mobos are pretty sturdy, they can handle such things

I plan on installing a legit version of Windows 10 on a new SSD I bought, first I will reset the BIOS trough BIOS settings because I used to have a cracked version of Windows 7 on this PC.
I wonder if possible leftovers or config of the past buggy install of Windows 7 could also affect my new install and whether it'd maybe be smart to just replace some more parts besides the SSD?
Also, does Windows 10 install all the drivers automatically as I've been told? Or do I still have to put chipset / bios / sound drivers / network drivers / video drivers on a USB-stick first?

tl;dr: Build 4-core system now or wait for new socket type?

So I want to build a PC for creative work, no gaming at all (I guess). Stuff like photoshop, painter, zbrush etc. It should all run at 4K where possible.

I'm already set on the monitor and all, but I'm a bit hesitant since all the new shit is coming out with a gazzilion cores like threadripper/i9 etc.

Does it make sense to wait a bit for the new shit to settle or is a current setup future proof? One thing that concerns me is that all these mobos past 4-core structures seem to only support lower RAM speeds.

Any suggestions?
>>
>>60822578
i7 7700k performs better than competitors products in video games right now, but thats only when the CPU becomes the bottleneck aka the limiting factor, which is uncommon unless you already have a beastly video card AND you're running games at 100+ fps.
>>
>>60822626
Not really sure what's that thing about 4 core structures motherboard?
Threadripper and i9 aren't really for you considering you can get a great 8 cores CPU for as cheap as $310. They're more for people that need quad channel & lots of PCIe lanes, but that will come at a very big cost in both motherboard and CPU.
Current CPUs are good and nothing fresh is coming until next year

Is it a meme?
>>
>>60822626
Generally speaking there will always be a brand new CPU "just around the corner". If you need a system now then go and buy a system now, if you can wait or cant' afford one now then buy it later.

If you're just going to use photoshop and programs like that then go with a Intel 4 core but if your creative work also includes video editing and rendering or you may want to do that in the future then don't be a corelet and go for that AMD AM4 platform and grab the 1600X or the 1800X depending on what you're willing to pay for it. Oh, one little detail, the 1600X has higher single thread performance than the 1700 so it's actually a better choice if you're going to do a lot of photoshop.
>>
I bought a Zotac 1060 amp 6gb because other 1060s and 580s were out of stock. It hasn't arrived yet. How hot does it run, /g/? Did I dun goof?
>>
>>60822758

Noticed all the Noctua threads and posts that have been appearing on /g/ the last few weeks?

They hired a "viral"/shadow marking company to shill those overpriced ugly-looking fans everywhere.

Don't buy overpriced Noctua fans, you'll be sponsoring / paying for shit-posting on /g/ and other sites if you do.

If we stop buying their products until they stop shitposting and we on /g/ consistently boycott companies with paid shills shitposting for them then this paid shitposting will eventually stop.

What's the best monitor for a 1080/4790k @4,6ghz? Thought about the samsung VA 144hz, because I cannot stand how shit TN is and I edit photos from time to time (tried my friends asus VG248qe the other day and it was horrible compared to my LG 75hz ips).

Anyone here tried the c24fg70? Also the C24fg73 is coming out soon, which supposedly has a better stand, so I might as well wait for that.

Also bought 4 asus MG279Q, all of them had defects (4 of them had dead pixels).
>>
>>60823756
Well it's fine, It wont be super loud but it wont be as quiet as something more high end. Maybe I misunderstood how quiet you wanted it to be.

I didnt mean changing the gpu cooler, I meant getting one that isnt too loud in it's stock config.

Then get IPS. We have some Dells at work, i like them, but i guess that's nothing for gaymen. That Asus seems to be good.
>>
>>60823852
>>60823915
IPS user here. IPS has horrible contrast, and meh saturation. VA panels have good contrast, better saturation and still OK color accuracy.

If you are just editing for fun, you don't need perfect color accuracy at all. People are still gonna view it on their shitty screens.
>>
>>60824040
Isn't VA just some kind of IPS or similar family? Don't really care since i only have TN, but do want IPS/VA/whatever in Q3/4 when Vega/Volta will be available for the mass market.
>>
>>60824127
>Isn't VA just some kind of IPS or similar family?
Not really, it's a separate technology.
>>
>>60824040
I'll be doing some graphic design work form home in photoshop that will be printed out. How significant is the difference between IPS and VA and what are the drawbacks to VA?

I know this is pcbg so its kinda off topic and I'm about to do some googling but getting someones perspective on this would be good. Cheers.

That's the same trash panel as the MG279Q except with a gsync model, i'd rather not attempt the panel lottery again.

A friend asked for help building a rig for 3d modelling.

I always built computers for friends that just wanted to play vidya, so I'm not sure in what should I focus for this one.

For starters, he linked me a build he chose, with an i7 5xxx and water cooling, something I instantly saw that was plain stupid. From what I know investing on a good GPU depends entirely on the software he plans on using.

So main question, Intel or AMD?

Also, if he's not going to OC, stock cooler should be fine right?
>>
>>60824672
Intel doesn't provide a stock cooler with their unlocked CPUs
Slight OC are fine on AMD's stock cooler but not big ones
For 3D modelling you want more cores so an i7 is obviously stupid
>>
>>60824494

I don't have any stores that have it in stock where I could test it.
>>
>>60824639
oh, is it just for that specific chipset?

B350 is the only chipset if you are doing OC but not crossfire or SLI so it's the one most people buy, so yes.

Noted thanks.

So, what I'm going to recommend him is:

Get a decent case, SSD+HDD and PSU for future builds.
Ryzen or wait for new CPUs.
16GB of RAM
Stock cooling, 212 Evo if it gets hot.
Mobo that fits his needs.
GPU depending on the software he uses.

If anyone has suggestions I'm all ears, remember this is a build for 3D modelling.

H7 is the same price as 212 or a few dollars more expensive but is better than 212 in all aspects in regards to cooling, fan, noise etc. If you have a 212 no need to upgrade but if you are getting a new build always pick a H7.

You have a shitty cable/connector or plug, have you tried another PC? Have you tried plugging other things? Try unplugging the videocard to reduce power consumption and check if it boots up
>>
>>60825554
Why is your GPU plugged in?
When troubleshooting boot issue, take everything out of your build and leave
1. The mobo
2. The CPU
3. The RAM
4. The PSU
Remove everything else and disconnect everything you can't remove from your build (HD in the bays/ CD drive etc).

Have you tried that?
>>
I would like to test out how well my GPU, CPU and RAM are functioning still.
This computer has been kicked around and beaten up by crazy ex (that's why she's ex now) and I would like to check which parts I can still use and which I have to replace.
I already replaced the PSU, case and HDDs because they were impossible to salvage.
Any benchmarks you can recommend?
Or are there any other better ways I can check?
Thanks in advance.
>>
>>60825562

I tried 4 different power cables to no avail. Taking out the GPU also didn't change anything

>>60825588
I have tried that. Would corrupted HD's prevent booting though. I mean I still did it, but I had little hope

Pls help
I need a four core, eight threaded CPU for a non-critical 24/7/365 server, but I don't know which option to choose
>Xeon E3-1230 v6 $250
>+ C236 motherboard $210
or
>Ryzen 5 1500X $185
>+ B350 motherboard $100
or
>wait for Denverton ~$400
The Xeon has full ECC support, but the Ryzen doesn't. They both have similar clock speeds, but Squid apparently doesn't work as well in a Ryzen CPU (at least not yet) The Xeon's motherboard is twice the price as the Ryzen board, but it has four ethernet ports and an IPMI port, whereas I need to pay $100 more for a quad-port ethernet PCIe card, negating the Ryzen's cost advantage.

Which has better single-threaded and multithreaded performance in the real world? Which has the lower overall power consumption?

Could someone recommend me good 1080p monitors? Honestly I'm not sure I care about things like 60, 75 or 144hz or IPS / TN screens, etc. I'd just like something good quality and not too expensive. I could spend over 400€ in a monitor but I don't think I'd really care nor enjoy the difference with one that's half the price considering what I do.

My train of thought too is that, if I end up feeling like I should've picked something better I could then use it as a second monitor. If you're wondering, the one I'm currently typing with is a VGA and I want to get rid of it by giving it to a family member. I need something I can plug DVI-D or HDMI to my GPU. Thanks for reading.

Well, you said it's non-critical, so does that even matter? For whatever it's worth, Ryzen technically does have the ability to support ECC RAM, it just isn't validated for that.
>>
>>60822076
Lian Li masterrace here. The Q11 and Q21 a brilliant. Jonsbo makes the U1+ and UMX which are great. EVGA Hadron is a meme but has has great layout and decent size. Those are my top 5 "towers". Lots of other good ones made by Silverstone or Thermaltake.
>>
>>60826484
Ryzen doesn't restart if the memory has a double-bit error, which could cause hard crashes if it happens. I don't mind restarting the server every 30 days, but it would be annoying to do when the server is located in the basement and has no IPMI to perform that remotely.

Is the Ryzen 1500X more power efficient? I've heard that Kaby Lake-EP uses less power than Skylake-EP despite having higher clock frequencies, but I have no idea if the quad-core Ryzen can compare favorably there.
Same with their thermals, since this is going to be in a 3U chassis with limited airflow sharing the same hot air as the 4U dual Xeon E5-2687W right beneath it.

>>60826584
Ryzen will have better temperatures because intel uses shitty TIM instead of solder. The 1230v6 isn't a low power part, so it'll almost certainly draw more power as well(though I'll admit that I haven't seen any reviews for Xeon E3s, so I wouldn't know for sure).

None of those are salvageable unless you are really poor, on a budget and can't afford to upgrade your parts.
>>
>>60827396

Problem is that doesn't stress the core anywhere near as much as it does the power delivery - you can easily slam into the point where the gpu throttles down to stop itself from exploding without stressing the core enough for it to error out. I prefer unigine valley for stress testing a gpus simply because it won't set your vrms on fire.
