Your brain damage may still be reversible. Switch to an OS that lets you use a keyboard driven launcher that strips out the legacy menu garbage. Alfred on OSX is one of the few things Apple actually got right, and there are a few clones of it for Linux.

tl,dr: Big icons in a fullscren launcher is more efficient than a smaller scrollable list for both touch and mouse thanks to Fitts' Law. Pic related.

Again, already posted from Microsoft themselves:
>>60825010
>There were also problems with traversing All Programs on Window XP. It wasn’t uncommon to have your mouse “fall off” the menu and then you’d have to restart the task all over again (this was especially challenging for laptop customers who used track pads or for those with limited dexterity). It was also difficult to fit all this UI into lower resolution screens. Vista addressed this with the introduction of a single menu and a tree control that required fewer acrobatics with the mouse. However, All Programs still felt cramped, since the menu required a scroll bar (fig 2). The Start menu was already starting to feel full.

So in a word, you have to take retards into account when doing UX design.
I have not experienced this 'problem' with the classic start menu (NT4.0 and 95 onwards) or with the XP start menu, not on lower resolutions (640x480) even.

And they the call the inside expanding, non-resizable menu a solution?

I was too young at the time but I do remember having a problem with that. If a program was too deeply nested, or you have too many programs, and you were hovering an entry and the mouse "fell off" it would close the entire menu and you would have to navigate all the way again. Searching for hover menus on google will get you a ton of pages about why it's bad design, although a lot is about mobile touch browsing.

It's quite obvious: Apple happened

The hypothesized asteroid impact that killed the dinosaurs: 60 million BC
Apple's enormous influential impact on society: 2008

Both impacts have in common that they changed the world. Apple is the womb that gave birth to the '10s

It seems to me that many other companies weren't created through ambition and don't have a distinct philosophy that drives it; tldr: unlike Apple they don't love their own products (or believe in them), so of course there is a correlation with that and their outcome
