Are glossy monitors a big meme or are they better than mattes?
They're better if glare is not a problem, if glare is a problem matte is better. It depends entirely where the display is being used.

Does anyone here not live in a completely dark environment?
After glossy I'm never going back to matte. Reflections kinda suck but the picture is amazing.

I keep warm, ambient lights on in grotto when I'm not sleeping because I value my serotonin levels.

>when then screen goes dark you will see your own reflection
You tell me.

this is the thing that makes me wonder how the fuck anyone can put a glossy screen on a laptop.
Sure, fine, make glossy desktop monitors, because presumably many people using them will sit them on a desk somewhere, arrange the lights to avoid glare, and then that's it. The monitor always gets used in that controlled lighting environment. Laptops, though, are meant to be picked up and taken places. Home, work, coffee shops, on trains, on a bench somewhere, in hotel rooms, all sorts of places where you'll have lights around you without the ability to just go turn them off. Matte is the only sensible choice for a laptop.
