Want to buy some crapbook and compatibility with OpenBSD is my requirement. Minimal specs: 4GB RAM, 4 cores (or threads), less than 15", SSD over 60GB, under 400$.

What are my options? No website specifies wifi chipset and I've heard I can have issues with sound as well.

Avoid nvidia graphics and broadcom wireless and you should be good. Intel graphics have the best support currently. I've never heard of (onboard) sound not working out of the box. I use an external USB DAC and it's just a matter of specifying the default output device for sndiod.

Okay, so I want to install OpenBSD on my t420, but in order to connect wirelessly to my router, I need the iwn driver. Long story short, I can't connect via Ethernet, so I would like to know if I can install and enable this driver on the live CD during install. Could I simply take the tarball, upload it to another usb, and install it that way, somehow?

Grab the file from http://firmware.openbsd.org/firmware, put it on a usb drive, do the install, plug the usb drive in, run fw_update (see the man page for specifics) and you'll have the firmware needed to get online.
