If I want to learn something useful now, but eventually go on to focus more on academic programming languages, what would be a better start, JavaScript or Python? I'm getting mixed messages everywhere.
both are fine choices imo. javascript is probably more useful than python but python would make a better first language to learn.

Does Python being better also apply if you specifically want to go on to learn functional programming?
I also wanna start but mainly on building apps. Does it make sense to start with swift?

C, Java and Python, in that order
then you can go wild

both are functional languages, there's little difference in that regard although in my experience people tend use the functional aspects of javascript more heavily in than they do when using python - though there's really no need to.

>both are functional languages
Nice bait
>>60791859
this desu if you are serious about programming. People only suggest python/ js first because if retards can't write a working program with 2 lines they give up. C is the most basic language there is and it gives you a better understanding of what computers actually do
>something useful
>academic programming languages
Pick one
C#

I need money to finance independent study of the latter.

anon your reading comprehension is really something special

I'm kind of leaning towards JavaScript since—despite being kind of a mess—it is somewhat functional in nature (and especially in frameworks like React) which is closer to Scheme, Lisp, Haskell and other academically oriented languages? Am I on the right track?

C#
Don't learn a scripting languages first, it will teach you to be a bad programmer and you'll have to unlearn a lot of those habits later
Skills in C# also translate well into other useful languages (C, C++, Java, Python, Ruby)
>Javascript as a first programming language
>Wants to learn something useful

Javascript definitely has more of a functional bent to it.
