Hello /fglt/. I just bought a new laptop for 400€. This is actually my first laptop and I'm quite excited.

Which distribution do you guys use on your laptops? I've mostly used Gentoo and Fedora on my desktop but I don't feel like ricing or customizing the laptop, I want it to "just work" and have a great battery life. Should I just throw Ubuntu MATE LTS on it and upgrade every two years? Debian should be easy as well but I don't know anything about laptops and Ubuntu MATE seems to come with all the power management crap and bluetooth.
>>
>>60791552
debian is most stable
fedora is alright
all real distros work fine on a laptop.
everything supports bluetooth, everything has good power management
>>
>>60791580
Thanks! Is DE choice noticeable in the battery life of a laptop? That's the main reason I'm considering MATE over GNOME. The CPU and RAM usage is much lower on MATE.

>>
>>60792191
Try to install Arch first.

After you've succesfully installed Arch, remove it and go for Gentoo.

If you can install Arch you can install Gentoo. If you fuck up Arch installation you won't lose the compilation time like you do with Gentoo.

Otherwise, no. I went straight to Gentoo and everything went fine.
That being said, I'm on Ubuntu again. Trying to fight it is a waste of time.
i was a similar user. familiar with desktop linux, could do basic terminal commands, but eventually went back to windows.

then I jumped straight into Gentoo a few months ago. Went through the entire install process about 5 times, with a lot of research and printing out guides/handbooks. It took 3 days before I was using Firefox comfortably.

No, compiling from source did not take 3 days. If I knew 100% exactly what I was doing and could type commands with 0 delay, the entire install process from wipe to Firefox would take 1-2 hours. But I don't know exactly what I'm doing, so those 3 days were spend reading, reading and reading. I would write out a list of each command I needed to run in order, and when something didn't work, I would go back and figure out which step I needed to change. Often it was just making a typo in and important config.

I would recommend it. It's gonna suck, you're gonna have moments where you think "fuck it I'll just go back to Ubuntu instead", but if you persevere, you'll end up with a 100% stable desktop that only has exactly what you want installed on it, and everything compiled from source. It's a comfy feeling.

It really depends what do you mean by that
For some people "being familiar with Linux" means not getting lost when they see Firefox instead of IE

As other anon suggested, you can try Arch instead of Gentoo first because you won't lose time on compilation

To be honest most packages build in a matter of minutes even on really old hardware by today's standards
Or you can build in one thread or leave the updates to perform overnight, or step away from your computer for a couple of hours once every half a year or so
It's not really a big problem and usually outweighed by distro's benefits

Well you can disable NetworkManager but it will break you current networking unless you'll set it up without NM

I don't use NM but I suppose you can just reconfigure your wlan0 not to use kwallet or something. Try checking "avaliable to all users" in connection options so it'll make connection's config system-wide, maybe it'll stop relying on users environment.

also consider not going to sites that would cause your provider to temporary kill your connection.

There are some standard configs everyone is copy pasting, one is twilys, the other one is http://noha-ra.deviantart.com/art/Melbourne-Firefox-CSS-FF-29-and-above-473887761 (pretty outdated).

Your best bet is to start costomizing twiliys config. That way you learn some css and when FF starts changing shit, you know how to fix it.

Is there however a way that I already login on the server with my thin client from the thin client's lightdm?

>>
>>60795713
Just boot it, backup data and reimage the computer.

The updating will be just fine, but probably some WM/DE api might have changed putting you back on the default config/config with errors.
If that doesn't bother you, go ahead.
Ofcourse, make sure you know how to access the boot partition and edit any errors, just in case.
>>
>>60797821
no thanks
>>
>>60797725
The updating won't fuck everything up severely as in wiping /dev/sda, no, but the system will probably be in an "unclean" state. How do I maintain an installation long-term without this happening?
>>
>>60797875
Depends on what you define as "unclean".
I consider mine unclean after a while of configuring stuff to for example setup dnsmasq or PCIe passthrough, configuring shit I most likely don't need and will fuck stuff up later.

Best way is to update regularly, and read the news for any changes.
Or go Debian and install once, stable forever, considering that you should update only security patches.

The way I do it is keep my user data on a seperate partition, wipe the OS when I deem it necessary and then just run an install script that sets everything up for me. That does require maintaining that script ofcourse.

you have to pay to use the branding but you also have to comply to the certification otherwise the branding would have no value.

it's the same with the java virtual machine. you can develop your own virtual machine if you want but to brand it as a "java virtual machine", you have to pay Oracle first.

it's all about branding.

Unix was a mistake since it was proprietary. Luckily BSD and GNU fixed that problem.

That said, back in the days, proprietary actually just meant proprietary; there weren't faggots who wanted to spy on you, sell your data, etc, so, don't be too mad to the Unix guys.

That said, BSD was a mistake since it enabled apple to rape them including granma and dog, in return, BSD is sucking the stale cum coming out of the clang pipeline. That's what happens when you don't protect your free software.

Can someone explain taskset to me?
sudo taskset -p --cpu-list 3 5828

The program runs on CPU3.
sudo taskset -p 9 5828

Changes the affinity mask, and the program no longer runs on CPU3. What exactly is an affinity mask?

Hi, /fglt/! I'm screwing about with Linux for the first time, using Ubuntu GNOME from a live usb. Just got finished with somehow managing to install MyPaint without knowing what the fuck I did or how it works :D

I have to say, this OS is pretty nice. It's certainly new, but I kind of like it. I was trying it out today because I bought a Cube iWork11 Stylus from someone on ebay for $100. He was selling it because the dual boot got fucked somehow and all it would do is boot to bios. Apparently he was incapable of googling how to reinstall/install an OS, so I just got a ~$300 penabled 2-in-1 with pen and keyboard dock included for beans. It should be here by Friday or Saturday of this week.

I've googled around and it seems that Linux support for 2-in-1 PCs is kind of abysmal at the moment, but GNOME, from what I hear, can work decently with them out of the box (touchscreen/wacom support, etc.) so I settled on it.

I haven't actually done much with it so far, but I like it. It certainly is strange after using nothing but Windows all my life, but it's not too bad. It's also pretty cool that I can run this thing straight from a flash drive. Using a new OS like this is rather exciting.

Hopefully GNOME works okay with the CUBE, my soon-to-be digital sketchpad/shitposting platform. I'm pretty pumped to try it out! I'll post updates if I'm successful.

What sort of programming language would I have to get into, to create an open source version of something like Daz Studio?

I realize this would be a massive undertaking for one or even a few neckbeards. I'm just curious

Good lord, the titlebar+tabs+url bar take up 1/4 of the entire browser window. Firefox and Gnome need to die.

Faenza.
Adwaita has been catching up lately. I love their new directory icons. Too bad the MIME type icons have no real border, so they are barely noticeable with white themes.

Next step: disable titlebars for maximized windows, since you already see information about it in the taskbar.
Saved another 12px.

I cleared my cookies earlier, still settling in.

I have two options, I can F11 and prevent hiding of the tabs, or I can hide the openbox titlebar.

>>60804724

I use Orcsome with Openbox to hide the titlebar on maximized windows.

I want to be a god at it.

Just get the kernel source and start reading it. Also read the documentation for the kernel and follow kernel mailing lists.
