Hello, /g/
Today, my ps3 controller(s) died on me. They won't charge up. My xbox one controller goes apeshit whenever it want to.

So. this thread is dedicated to the wonderful technology we all use to game.

>Favorite controller?
(Personally, I love the gamecube controller, but I'd pick the sixaxis over anything.)
>What controller would you recommend?
>Worst controller you've used? (pic related)
>>
>>60785487
Wii U Pro with mayflash dongle
It's my preference at this point, though I'm a fan of the daulshock 4, as well
>>
Logitech f310

Cheap and works great with nba 2k17 which is really all i play with a controller
>>
>>60785597
Hm, interesting. How does the Wii U Pro 'feels' in your hands? Is it too big? Small? The reason why I like the play station dual shock is that it's symmetrical, and the buttons are on top, instead of under the joysticks.

>>60785657
Hm, does the logitech f3150 has triggers? It looks ugly, but I'm sure it's functional.
>>
>>60785597
>no analog triggers

Fucking stupid
>>
I'm still using a 2007 PS3 Dualshock 3 controller with the original USB cable.
>>

>>
>>60786474
Controllers ARE a type of technology, dipshit.
>>
my favorite is playstation dualshock. currently rocking the cheap f310 by logitech, only use it for classic emulators on pc. f310 has good enough buttons and d pad. can't speak for the analog sticks
>>
>>60786493
So are video games.
>>
>>60785487
I'd just toss new batteries in the DS3s, they're by far my favourite controllers.
>>
My Playstation Move controller is having problems keeping a charge. Can only go a couple rounds in Time Crisis. Granted that's all I play at one time but it still sucks.
>>
When I was younger, PS2 controller hands down... Easy to access the buttons, and I grew up on PS system... When I started getting a little older and hands started getting bigger, I tried the 360 controller and loved it after a few months. I don't play on console anymore, but a few pc games, and 360 controller is cheap, and comfortable.

I got to hold an xbone controller and that one is super comfortable
>>
>>60787862
DS controllers are fine for adult hands, you just need to know how to hold them. You don't grip the shit out of them like Xbox controllers, they rest on your fingers.
>>
Fuck you, n64 controller is the best

Got 3 of these for $25 a piece at microcenter when they were mass selling a lot of stuff. MS branded 360 controller with MS branded wireless adapter for it. Works in every single game and Windows 10 even had the drivers for it by default. 2 AA batteries keep this controller good for months.

This.

If drivers wasn't a gigantic dick(directinput -> xinput), i think i would use a good Gravis Gamepad. Or something else with a decent dpad
>>
When things like that die on me, it's usually cuz the damn cord broke. Strip the cord where the circuit broke (usually right where it connects into the controller) reconnect whatever wires broke and cover it with duct tape. If you don't have solder to fix the wires I just crumble them back together with my fingers then cover them in hot glue. Some of my stuff still works like this
>>
>>60788624
The D-Pad may be nice, but the positioning of those face buttons looks like ass.

I used a Saitek p990 for a long time. It was great, though its analog sticks were mediocre at best. Dualshock 4 is where it's at now; they finally made a controller that doesn't require lobster hands to use.

What's the big deal with F310? Mind enlighten the rest of the board on that?
>>

When my DS3's USB port died I got a DS4. Fantastic controller. A bit bigger, but the buttons are nicer and the sticks feel more sensitive. Also, FAR superior directional pad. Touch pad is kind of weird, but macros for it make it nice.
The 360 pad is garbage and One's barely an improvement.
I'd like to try the Switch Pro Controller - looks pretty comfortable, even if it's bigger.
>>
>>60785487
>Favorite controller?
Xbox One Elite.

>What controller would you recommend?
An ordinary Xbox One (S) controller. Elite if you happen to come by one at a discount, but it is not at all worth its full retail price.

>Worst controller you've used?
Dualshock 3. Worst fucking triggers ever, and (subjectively) shitty layout.

ayyyyyyy lmao you actually bought that fucking piece of shit? Holy FUCK you're dumb.
>>
is it possible to use a wireless DS3 by connecting the charging USB cable to your PC? does the cable also transmit input? (no bluetooth on my pc)

i always thought it was impossible and would only work for input through bluetooth but you guy's posts are implying otherwise
>>
>>60789423
I think both DS3 and DS4 works on PC, you might need some more stuff for DS3
then you need something like DSTool to convert the input to that xbox input
>>
>>60789423
Yep works fine without Bluetooth. You need third-party drivers to actually make it work.
MotionJoy and DSTool are shit and have built-in ads, I would highly recommend ScpToolkit https://github.com/nefarius/ScpToolkit
Like >>60789500 said they convert the input to Xbox controller input so it will work with any game that supports Xbox controllers.
>>
>>60789219
>Worst fucking triggers ever
They were more like paddles but they weren't as satisfying to use.
I remember them being a little bit better to manage that analogue control though.

I'd still have to say I like the 360 controller a lot more. I didn't even own a 360

DS4 is best controller ever made. X360 is second place.
>>

Worst I have used is DS3 btw. Super floppy analog sticks, cheapest plastic case ever and way too small for adults.

I wouldn't mind it, if X360ce wasn't a complete fucking piece of shit, that gets more and more broken by the day.

Nevermind the clacky dpad.
>>
>>60794891
>Its Directinput
That's got nothing to do with the controller, that's an OS problem. It's not the controller's fault that MS is trying to vendor-lock Windows to Xbox controllers.

Steam should ban XInput for what that.

>>

The N64 controller had two bumpers and a Z trigger. If you look at the buttons the GCN controller is in a very real sense just a second gen N64 controller. But I agree. A left bumper and clickable analog sticks would make it a whole new ball game.
>>
>>60793257
What the fuck man your average $10 China crap is better than this. DS4 is king of all Generationen.
>>
>>60791681
What's that model?

Here's another one, the Saitek P2600 Rumble. There's also a wireless version without rumble (P2900) as well as a vanilla one. Unfortunately one of the triggers is stuck on mine. And the rubber is becoming disgusting.

I've been searching for a good new controller with six face buttons for quite a while now.

I don't know man, the dualshock 3 is good but now that I'm almost 30 I tried replaying DMC3 the other day and the buttons are too close together to do good combos or my hands are just too fat now.

I use this on my PC, but it's not the best controller ever. The best was the Sega Dreamcast controller. I also liked the N64, especially due to having six buttons at front (really, why are we still stuck with four buttons? fucking brainlets), but the joystick while very acurate was also very fragile. Probably the worst controllers were the PlayStation ones, the joystic has no sensitivity at all, it's like four levels from 0 to 100 and with a huge deadzone.

Most drivers are Directinput, so they don't need it. Or they aren't, so you need some shitty driver(wiimotes, anything that doesn't involve mayflash).
On the top of that, you need a driver emulator, because Xinput is a piece of shit, and there is no good driver emulators.

gamecube is pretty solid, wii u pro controllers are pretty solid, although if money isn't an issue, the switch pro controller is an upgrade in every way (added motion and nfc for example)

never really fell for the 360 controller meme too hard. worked okay for playing some games with friends on the actual console, and I did used to have one for pc games, but it was a crummy third party one that kind of fell apart on its own. I was much happier with my wii u pro controller.

>>60786515
not in the same way, controllers can serve a purpose outside of games. I used to use xpadder to control my pc comfortably with a controller, and now with the steam controller and sc-controller, this works even better. it's especially nice for an HTPC that doesn't need a full keyboard all the time
>>
>>60795773
the steam controller is actually shockingly low quality. all the plastic feels pretty cheap on it. it works very well and I love it, but I've heard plenty of horror stories of it just kind of breaking in similar ways for different people after a while, allegedly through 'regular use' even

It baffles me to this day that every D-pad isn't a knock off of the Genesis 6 button and Japanese Sega Saturn pad.

Sega literally figured out the problem fucking 30 years ago and eliminated the the central pivot point which is what creates unintended up/down and left/right errors when shifting quickly left to right, up to down, etc.

Surely Sega isn't holding on the rights to this design but if they aren't then there better be some god damn good reason most controllers are still using objectively worse center pivot designs.

Used one for SNES emulation way back when. My brother showed me and I was such a n00b that I ran the .exe from the .zip because I didn't know anything about computers.,

Real talk. Why is there not a keypad controller for MMOs? Just replace the dpad with analog and use the 6 button version.

Hasbro or whoever owns Atari now, if you're reading this, make a 6 button analog jaguar controller and sell it as an MMO accessory.

I'd buy that shit in a heartbeat.
>>
>>60806245
The original Duke controller has the perfect size for my hands, buttons are spaced well too. But those rounded buttons hurt your fingers after an hour of playing.

Meanwhile with the S controller they completely fucked up the layout. White and black buttons reversed and in a shitty position. Start and Select are unreachable without letting go of the stick/D-Pad. On the other hand, buttons have a good feeling to them.

Why do they have to mess up at least one thing every time? Also, fuck Microsoft for having their own color scheme that matches neither the Dreamcast nor Nintendo controllers. (the latter would have been best)
>>
>>60788431
I like the replaceable batteries. Today everything has to have a built in li-ion battery so when it dies in about 4 years you can buy a new device, only play with the cable connected or replace it yourself which a lot of people are too stupid for.
Of course I use rechargeable AA batteries for my xbox360 controller

It baffles me how no one has done a decent clone of the sega saturn pad yet. It's got some of the best ergonomics of classic controllers and the best D-Pad of all time, and yet, everyone prefers to do DS4/X360 controllers.

I wish SEGA would make those USB versions again. They did for PC and PS2 to commemorate the SEGA Saturn 10 year anniversary, but since then they haven't built a single one. It's all Retrolink knockoffs.

Because SEGA didn't keep it for the Dreamcast. So when "Dreamcast 2.0: We bought the remains edition" arrived from Microsoft, they kept some of the worse features of the Dreamcast including a non Saturn Dpad.

Another issue is that controllers are not flat anymore, so the board layout is different. Sadly.
>>
>>60807953
>Dreamcast 2.0: We bought the remains edition
What do the Dreamcast and Xbox even have in common besides some details of the controller (analog triggers, two expansion slots, being fuckhuge), some ports/remakes (several of which were on GCN and PS2 as well) and Dreamcast being capable to run a stripped down Windows (but CE rather than Xbox's 2000 derivative).

I really doubt Microsoft paid any money to Sega for the hardware.
>>
>>60807742
Thats sorta just what happens when you botch your US/Euro Launch, botch followup on the Megadrive system itself, and then don't do Saturn 2.0 controllers for the Dreamcast.
Japan even has SEGA brand Saturn USB controllers, meanwhile USA has fuck all.
>>
>>60808061
My foregiveness. I was mistaken. Its more about parallel inhouse development.
>It was Microsoft's first video game console after collaborating with Sega to port Windows CE to the Dreamcast console. Microsoft repeatedly delayed the console, which was first mentioned publicly in late 1999 during interviews with Microsoft's then-CEO Bill Gates. Gates stated: "we want Xbox to be the platform of choice for the best and most creative game developers in the world".[16]
>The Xbox was officially announced at the Game Developers Conference on March 10, 2000.[17] Audiences were impressed by the console's technology. At the time of Gates' announcement, Sega's Dreamcast sales were diminishing and Sony's PlayStation 2 was just going on sale in Japan.[18] Gates was in talks with Sega's late chairman Isao Okawa about the possibility of Xbox compatibility with Dreamcast games, but negotiations fell apart over whether or not the Dreamcast's SegaNet online service should be implemented.
The internal collaboration is such a complex issue, that i doubt that the similarities on controller is chance.

SEGA really underestimated the US market's effect on a console's adoption and longevity. They also fucked up by releasing the Saturn on the US with that horrid Model 1 controller, and to top it off, they also never released the cool stuff outside of the japanese market. Sony and Nintendo didn't make the same mistakes.

They sort of did a Saturn controller for the Dreamcast, though it just wasn't the same. But oops, no US release for you either.

This. The d-pad is good, but if you need that but it's better to just go for a DS4 or DS3 (though the latter has PITA drivers).

If you want to play FPS from the couch though, the Steam Controller is best as long as you use it with a mouse+gyro config. It takes tweaking and has a very steep learning curve if you go straight to FPS though. It's pretty damn good for third person games. It's godly for mouse controlled twin-stick-shooters though with an absolute mouse input setup (essentially turns the right pad into a drawing tablet, so where you touch on the pad is where your mouse cursor appears on screen, Osu! is extremely playable with it). The D-pad mode on the left stick is meh though, I've completed a few games with it but I'd prefer a normal D-pad or just a softer left-pad pad click so I could use it for menu navigation without going CLICK CLICK CLICK nor having to hover my thumb over the pad in menus (luckily, the left-pad works pretty well as a left-stick replacement for platformers and action games, so putting the emulated D-pad on the actual left stick works comfortably).

That's funny, because it's MS that blocks vibration to the Xbox controller if used with DirectInput to purposely try to kill DirectInput while DirectInput's rumble works perfectly with other controllers. Good job getting cucked. Mail MS and ask for your vibration back.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectInput#XInput
>>
>>60805270
Because MS wants to vendor lock Windows and Xbox controllers. Now you need to get through extra hoops to get otherwise normal USB HID controllers working, which even support more functions than XInput.

I'm surprised there isnt more love for the gamesir stuff on here. They're literally my favorite controllers(the G3 and G4 layouts) for their versatility and comfort. The build quality is a little below what youd get with first party stuff(but still leagues better than other 3rd party brands) but since they work on damn near everything...

I own 2 G3s, and 2 G4s. Managed to get all 4 for $40usd using some coupons and sketchy ebay connections. Only complaint i have is the G4's integrated mount should have been designed better so you dont need that clip-on adapter for any phone thicker than 1/4", and that it didnt have those tacky silver accents.

I used my buddy's on a shooter (think it may have been HL2) and it was fucking terrible, the sensitivity didn't seem consistent and it would often not even register movement. If for some reason a keyboard and mouse wasn't an option I'd rather use a controller with sticks, personally I prefer the DS3 over the 360 controller (have an Xbone controller that came with my Rift but haven't tried it yet).

Speaking of the Rift the touch controllers are pretty fucking great, although perhaps not relevant to this thread as they're not usable on non-VR games unfortunately.
>>
>>60815437
From what i have heard, the steam controller is utter SHIT until you put a solid 10 hours into it, at which point it becomes much better than anything else.

I personally dont have the cash to invest in something that *might* feel amazing 10 hours later... So i'll keep using my wired 360 controller from 2006...
>>
>>60816731
I dunno man. I suppose you could get used to the sensitivity after a while, maybe it has built in acceleration or something, but there's no way you can get used to the inconsistent tracking. It's like a shitty trackpad on an old laptop that works when it wants to.
