Are ebook tablets a meme? Would you buy one? And if you already have one, would you recommend it?
>>
Although I prefer actual paper books, e-ink displays are great. I've read a ton of books on my kindle I never would have read otherwise.
>>
>>60777671
See, that's why I'm so tempted to buy one. I like reading books when I lay down before my night's sleep, but paper books are sometimes too cumbersome for the bed, plus you need a light source and I'd rather not have that.

But my problem is that for a tablet that you mostly use for reading ebooks, it's too expensive at $100+ (Relative to what you get).
>>
If you can afford the space and money that paper books require, I think they're the superior option.

Reading from a regular screen for long periods of time feels a little stressful on my eyes, so I got an ebook. I am very satisfied with the purchase.
>>
Just use your phone faggot
>>
>>60777849
Fuck that.
>>
>>60777642
Reading on my kindle is much nicer than using my phone/tablet. Also it's so easy to put any book I want on it.
>>
>>60777913
Does it work well in low light environments? Does it strain your eyes at all? Sometimes I'm forced to read on my phone but I hate it, too much brightness, even on the lowest possible settings
>>
>>60777642
Ex-XDA ebook Dev here.
Fuck them. Get a cheap tablet or a phone.
They are a meme.

If you have to get something get a Nook Simple touch with microSD reader and root it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWBcvWuWw_w

Readers are slow as fuck. You do everything on them slow and for what?
>>
>>60778038
No, I just turn the brightness down to a comfortable amount but generally the most low light I read in is in bed with a lamp on.
>>
>Too expensive
>Ebooks cost the same as physical copies, sometimes less, sometimes more but usually within 1-2 dollarydoos difference

This. A Sage encyclopedia costs $240 on fucking Google play store. I could get a cheaper physical copy in mint condition

E-ink is way better than a phone or tablet for reading. Get one with a front light.
Post choices are Paperwhite and Kobo.
Check out #bookz and #ebooks for free books.
Check out calibre for library management, removing DRM, etc. It will automatically convert between formats as needed when sending to your device.

If you read a lot of non-pdf material, I'd recommend one. You can pick them up used for cheap. I see them at thrift stores all the time. They can be slow, but no more slow than physically turning a page on a real book. The benefit of being able to pirate books and reading out of print shit is well worth it.

>>
>>60779547
Usefulness shouldn't be the main argument for this price gouging. Ebook readers have been around long enough to justify a price reduction, it's not some amazing new technology.

I mean, from a business standpoint, it's retarded for Amazon to sell Kindles at such a high price since its main income will come from selling ebooks. Printer manufacturers do it, consoles do it etc, they sell the machine at a lowish price because they know the "byproducts" is where the money's at
>>
>>60777642
Have a Kobo. love it.
Paper is nicer, but kobo + downloading books is cheaper.
>>
I wanted a reader for manga but all the ones with non-shit resolution were really expensive. I ended up getting a Mi Pad 2 and I'm really happy with it.
>>
>>60779950
It's a "high" price because they can't really sell you an upgraded model every few years like other electronics. Once they added the backlight, that was it. You buy one and use it until you break it or lose it.
>>
>>60777849

Considering a Kindle Paperwhite for $120. I read a lot. That said, is there any driving reason to pay $200 for the Kindle Voyage? Or God forbid, the $289 Kindle Oasis?

All I want is a good backlight because I read in bed all the time, and good battery life. I do intend to buy my books from the Kindle store if that matters.

The Kindles don't take microSD cards correct? There is enough space for at least 10 books on these right? I average about a book every 2 days.
>>
>>60786726

>>
>>60786771
>I do intend to buy my books from the Kindle store if that matters.
Don't do it. If you have money to burn consider charity or something.
If you like an author send book's cost to his bank account, he sees only a very small % of those money you pay for a book.
Why the fuck do you want to fund some CEO's private island is beyond me.

Typical size of an ebook on a kindle is about 2mb. Storage on a Paper White is 4gb. Yes, you can hold at least 10 books.

They all have a light, although the lighting on the Voyage or Oasis is more even due to them using more LEDs, but it probably doesn't make any difference to most people.

The Oasis has physical page buttons while the others require you to swipe the screen to turn the page. Depends on your preferences, I have a Nook and I tend to swipe anyway even with the buttons. They're nice but not $170 more nice.

books take nearly 0 space anon, they're just text. you'll be able to store as much as you want

the only advantages of the voyage seem to be a light sensor (to automatically adjust the screen brightness) and actual page-turn buttons in addition to the touchscreen
is this worth $80 to you? probably not

that said you should buy the $140 paperwhite, not the $120 "includes special offers" one. unless you want an ereader infested with mandatory adware, or you're planning to root it to remove that shit

>why the fuck do I want to fund some CEO
It's not like I buy from them solely to fund said CEO, I do it because it's convenient. What other book buying service is there that are as seamless as buying from the Kindle store? One that doesn't involve trying to download the book 3rd party, turn it into epub with Calibre, and hoping the Kindle accepts the transfer?
>>60786866

It's unobtrusive, I have it.

*Can pirate books
*Seriously, eink is awesome in well lit areas
*My Kindle was free

Cons
*Just like a book, you'll need a light to read in poorly lit areas (which makes it nearly useless to me)
*Just like a book, you have to hold the device (I'll come back to this)
*It's really fucking slow and can't handle a large library (if you don't pirate, this probably won't affect you)
*anything other pure text ebooks are fucking trash. PDF support is abysmal and good luck reading any comics
*has all the cons of a book and you still have to charge the damn thing
*screen is pretty low resolution and limits the size of readable text
*Navigation is slow and clunky unless you are progressing one page at a time
*Takes a second to refresh the display (so changing pages is slow)

Some of my issues are related to my particular model, some of the issues are due to being an amazon device. If you want an e-reader (and I would still recommend it), go for a kobo glo unless you can get a paperwhite absolutely dirt cheap (though I read that you can't turn off the backlight on those which I imagine can be somewhat annoying).

I end up just using an 8" windows tablet and sumatra pdf to read books. I actually like the landscape dual column layout better anyway. My tablet case has a cover that folds into a stand and it significantly improves my enjoyment while reading. I like it especially because I can eat and read at the same time. The tablet is heavy and the battery is kinda shitty (especially compared to an ereader) and those are the only two cons I'd say. I find that not being able to read in direct sunlight is not nearly as big of an issue as amazon would like you to think. In fact, I've never run into a situation where a regular LCD worked poorly compared to an eink screen. I like the eink but having a backlight is much more important to me.

Plus, I can use it for porn

Yea and having the X-Ray function for some books is really useful.

Too small, plus e-ink is much nicer to read on.
>>
I've got a kindle paperwhite and it's pretty decent. I've read about 200€ worth of books on it by now, all of which I pirated, so it kinda pays off in the long run. When I didn't have internet in my new place for six weeks, I just downloaded books at work and put them on my kindle with calibre and I had stuff to read the entire time to fill my evenings.

>$3
>Expensive

Yeah, $3 would be expensive for a bottle of water, n'am sayn'? Same logic applies
>>

it is a meme.
The technology is way too slow and way too expensive.

The picture quality is better than any other screen type I have used.
I would pay a lot of money to get an a4 sized display, but all the people who have ever been involved with making these have been clueless idiots who wanted to push too much features into what should be a fairly simple device.

I do own one of the 6" kindle ones and they are great for stuff like novels, but they don't work well with a4 sized pdf papers and that would be way more useful than the xml files they do support.
>>
The good models are a bit too expensive and unfortunately they can't really become much cheaper because as of right now there is 1(one) manufacturer making e-ink panels.
>>
>>60787272
he's saying "pay the author directly" are you that fucking dense?
>>
alright, so which 8-10" ebook reader do I get if I want to pirate stuff and have a decent PDF viewer?
some kobo, or rather onyx? any specific model?
>>
>>60790526
>and have a decent PDF viewer?
None.
Get a tablet.

If it's just central text on a pdf, that's manageable. If it's graphics or other shit that would require a lot of panning around, don't bother.

There are other ebook vendors besides amazon. It's not as if amazon is the publisher; they get the files from the publisher (like everyone else) and then add on their bullshit drm to unnecessarily complicate things.

Do kindles still show you ads on the device?
lmao

Have a Kobo Glo HD and I'm very satisfied with it. Reading on a high res e-ink screen is so much more comfortable than reading on an lcd screen.
Only issue I have is incorrect epubs that only displau correctly on normal dpi screens, whereas they display images way too small on a high dpi screen. Which can be rather annoying when reading technical books.
>>
>>60778077
>You do everything on them slow and for what?
For reading, assfuck.
>>
i hcve physical copy but great for travel
>>
Kobo Aura 2 vs Kindle Paperwhite? The price is the same. The Kobo is smaller and lighter, but it's 210ppi vs 300 for the Paperwhite

It's a meme.

Tablets exist. ereaders are sheer redundancy.
>>
ereaders are very convenient. I picked up an old kindle without internal lights from a fleashop for 30 bucks and I used it throughout 3 years of university (theres a neat prog to resize big books like text books to fit the screen but i forgot its name) and now im using it to read on the beach. Would recommend.

E-books should cost 1 dollar. There are almost no costs involved.
>>
>>60789056
Even kindle will just werk (but you have to find mobi or convert epub to mobi)
>>
>>60792032
That is retarded and bait.
But you should also get a digital copy if you buy a physical book. Also I agree that the e-book should have a reduced price, but 1 dollar is retarded.
>>
>>60787265
>paid the writer in the first place
Few thousand dollars in most cases when they get tens or hundreds of thousands from buyers.
>they converted it into various formats
Please don't be retarded, my mum can do it.
>>
>>60792053
That's what self-published authors go for. (And they do hire someone to proofread and format the e-book correctly. Everything else is just a stupid meme like advertising or paying for third villa of some fag.)
Though I could agree to 2 USD if you insist.
>>
>>60787022
You can put mobi's on them via usb or email even if they aren't hacked. Lot of ebooks are in epub format but you can convert these to mobi with calibre.
>>
>>60791878
Get bigger screen for manga.
Anyway e-readers aren't about screen size (which as you astutely divined is rather smallish in most cases) but about longer operation time and comfortable reading in direct sunlight or at night.
>>
>>60792151
see

>all these people saying e-books are more expensive than they should be
You do realize that when you buy physical books, you are literally paying for just paper, right?

You do realize that when you buy ebooks, you're literally paying for just a bunch of 1s and 0s, right?

I was talking about e-book readers.
