BSD is UNIX by heritage.
Plan 9 is UNIX by association (Bell Labs)
X is X, even though it's current implementation X.org is free.
The only reason Linux isn't a UNIX is because nobody wants to pay the open group a bunch of money to make it certified.

That's why I called it by association, but not by heritage. They basically started from scratch and threw out the old source.
