Acer Chromebook 14 with GalliumOS installed on it. Big, decent speed (mostly run Firefox, Emacs, and Telegram with no problems). I've done development work on it but not extensively. It plays Civ4 through PlayOnLinux well enough. Will also play Rimworld acceptably well.

Strongly recommend.

but really though, intel chromebooks are where it's at. can run more linux more natively. no need to worry about finding ones that have ARM support. also seconding the fact that your daily driver shouldn't double as your gaming platform. small, lightweight, cheap aren't adjectives that describe a laptop that can play games decently.

ah well okay then. the last time i did that hunt it ended with a fairly decent computer, just not as much on the portable size. i just remember how tough it was to find a dedicated card in a laptop without it being huge as fuck. or extra expensive. and in that case, not all chromebooks are made equal. some can have a bit of power but at your budget there won't be quite as many. i have an acer 11" cb3-111 from 2014 that still gets sometimes upward of 8 hours of battery under moderate use. i love it.
