First and foremost i dislike a lot of nas set ups, especially the overpriced prebuilt ones.

However I think I need a nas. My main reason is noise; 3 hard drives always running makes my computer loud as hell, especially when i have a noctua cpu cooler and quiet gpu cooler, it makes it disproportional. Secondly Of course is the server aspect of it. Sure i can run a ftp server over my lan but that means my computer needs to be on 24/7 which brings me to my third point of power. I have a 8350 7970 setup so its tdp is rated at 500w max or something. Not exactly cheap to run when the idle is quite high.

So I ask, whats the best way to set up a nas for 4 hard drives (going to add a 4th). I looked into pis and theyre not exactly powerful enough nor are their transfer speeds good (100Mbs iirc). Main points gotta be price (cost and running cost) and silence. These dedicated nas devices seem to cost $500 for the low end 4 bay versions. Of course this is to store in a different room and run at all times.

nas is a meme

its just a small scale file server really

Do you run Windows or Linux? No experience with windows but setting up NFS sharing on Linux is piss easy.

Ill add this: devices usally (or atleast should) have a low power mode.
For example, I have a 6700k (using igpu) and a 1060 that is vfiobound and used soley for vms. My host os doesnt even see the gpu except for when looking at pcie devices. On idle I use about 70 watts on the mains.

Even under load (multi threaded compression with 7z using the highest compression setting of 9) I only see about 90 or so watts used on the mains (I dont remember)*. This is basically like having a decently bright light bulb turned on. I use to have 4 x 75 watt bulbs in my ceiling fan alone, but since we led now and the lights only draw about 40 watts for all of them, having the computer on AND the lights is using less energy than if I didnt even have the computer in the first place and just kept on using incandescent lights.

*Right now I have firefox with 90 tabs open, a samba server, an arch vm vps running a voip server, a windows vm doing stuff and I am only using 72.4 watts at this very second.
