change the wifi channel to whatever everyone else in the complex uses so you get dropouts all the time then get your roomates to split for a new router with you

Could do that, but it doesn't feel right. I've gone with the practice of just playing when the speed was good and only kicking people out of the network if they grab traffic when i'm mid game and then let them in again after the match, but it's annoying and the speed doesn't stay good for more than 30 minutes anyway unless it's past midnight.

the new router bit is serious though
tell them about the issues with the cheap packaged router and that you'd like to get a new one which would improve everyones usage and if they would like to split with you for it
you can probably get a decent enough one for $100 or less (whatever that is in germabucks)

I don't keep up with routers though so I have no idea what is good or cheap nowadays
