Not really. Everything was more of a pain in the ass.

New CPU? Gotta set jumpers on the mobo in the correct order. Oh, but there is no internet and you threw out the manual.

There was a lot more OEM competition though. IBM made the sexiest desktop line (PS2). SoI suppose that was interesting.

IBM DOS, MS DOS, MAC, Windows, X86K, OS/2 WARP, NeXTSTEP, UNIX, Plan9, SunOS. OSes were much more varied and intresting.

Hardware too, everything is so standard now that there is no innovation.
