I don't think it's a waste of time. Especially not if you make it to interview. When asked to describe your past-times, you can explain that you spend your time doing programming competitions. If it's an hr type this will sound great, if they know what hackerone is, you can just say you spend some time on hackerone and include a link in your cv/resume.
