But /g/ told me VR was the future!
>>
>>60747093
No I didn't. I told you from the start the 3d has always been a gimmick doomed to failure because people can't fucking stand to put on a pair of glasses when they play games, let alone strapping a backback to their face.
>>
>>60747093
It fucking flopped because it's shit. It's just a screen really close to your eyes, not even remotely VR.
>>
>>60747093
current VR tech is just like pdas it's just isn't good.
>>
>>60747093
VR is the future.

Hence the word FUTURE.

VR is not the present.

Not surprised at all to hear that. It looks like Bridge Crew is flopping hard. This is a multi-million budget triple-A from a major studio that has less than 1000 players a week after release. It's completely pathetic and clear VR has no market at all. The people who said otherwise were smoking crack.
>>
if it's dead why are marketers still using VR ready buzzword? checkmate nig/g/ers

No idea.I was thinking between nitro and pulse, then i noticed the "vr ready on nitro" so i took pulse.

Sad because its one of the best VR titles out right now, along side DCS and Asetto Corsa.
>>
My vive is collecting dust mostly because I'm getting motionsick after wearing it 2 minutes.

I'm also fat and lazy and would have to move to use it which I can't be bothered to.
>>
Currently vr's only purpose is pornography.
Although the rick and morty virtual rickality game shows promise of how vr games can be instead of the shoort le bow and arrow games.
>>
VR wont sell if it hasn't waifu-bait game yet.
>>
>>60747469
imo this is the number one reason vr will never take off in the mainstream. people are just naturally lazy (me too) and don't want to have to be constantly moving around to play a game.
>>
>>60747732
it's why the wii was also perfect and didn't face a huge amount of refunds - people just stopped standing up to play tennis and played all the games sitting down
>>
>>60747134
it fucking flopped because most people couldn't afford the hardware
>>
>>60747093
>can't even tell buzzwords fom the actual thing.

i thought people here would understand memes
>>
>>60747732
>don't want to have to be constantly moving around to play a game
With proper games you wouldn't even have to. I'm fucking more than decade old games in VR with head tracking and every other gimmick disabled and I control it with mouse + keyboard. It's essentially literally a monitor strapped to my head, but it feels amazing.

Games that are VR specific are shit, literally all of them.

Thank god i didn't buy into the VR is the future of gaming crap after getting burned by virtualboy.
>>
>>60748574
It works with everything. It just streams your PC display to your phone.

Controlling could be difficult. But if it you can control the game with mouse+keyboard only or with an Xbox controller then it's good.
>>
>>60747093
>VR hardware is too expensive
>2D games are fun and still have a long way to go
VR will eventually replace everything, but they pushed that shit way too early. We're not ready for VR yet.

How much is VR hardware?
What brands are there?
Is it open source?
>>
>>60748617
Yeah, but I think controlling would be the most fun part of it
I will get a new phone and try, thanks
>>
>>60747093
Is it flopping, though? The percentage could be lowering because the overall number of Steam users increased.

There were some months were the linux percentage decreased despite it getting more users because of that.

>>
>>60748659
This is almost certainly the case. Its doubtful that anyone has gotten rid of their VR gear (would Steam even know if you had?), its just the rate of VR adoption hasn't kept pace with Steam adoption.

As you say, same way that GNU/Linux on Steam has gone down even while at the same time going from a few hundred thousand users to around one to two million users.

>>
>>60749264
Paying a monthly bill isn't the same as forking over $500 in a single payment you fool.
Then there's the added cost of a PC before you can use it effectively.
People want it. But $1200 is a bit much.
Hopefully Sony can make prices come down. Around $300 would make it begin the upswing.
>>
>>60749898
Both Rift/Vive are made of two 1080x1200 panels.

Not 4K. The $800 and $500 are not material cost, but research cost. When Rift was announced at $500, Sony balked at the outrageous price. They were also developing their own internal VR headset. They were probably going to release their headset for ~300 or less. Only later did they up the price to $400.

Even then they were way past profit margin for each sale.
>>
>>60749939
Anyone buying an $800 VR headset likely already has a gaming machine handling it. Nobody's buying dedicated machines.
>>
>>60750002
Rift was crowdfunded, I don't see how research costs are in consumers price

I completely expected it to be mostly FPS games that could be played with monitor/mouse just as well as with VR, yes. Who would expect to be able to sell a VR-only game to more than a small handful of people?

If you think VR is just another video device, you completely miss the point. It's not as simple as taking something like Doom and mapping the camera to the headset. Games are being *purpose written* for VR. Thing is, the prices match right now. Most titles are $20 and up.
>>
>>60750301
Nevertheless, are they actually expecting VR to be a mass market?
>>
>>60750301
I'm surprised the rick and mort game is that price. I watched a play through, it's a very well made game. I was expecting it to be $50+
The rest there is probably trash.

Yes it is kike shill.
>>
>>60747093
VR clearly is the future anyone who says otherwise is fucking retarded.

The issue is current hardware for VR sucks.
$600-$900 to strap something your fucking head that can keep focus? That makes it useless for the majority of people who wanted to replace your monitor with a small screen that's of high quality. See there is a great majority of people out there who don't have a huge living room to put a massive TV and or could even afford a massive TV, but we can pay for 4K $300 screen that 8 inches big. Put that on our faces focus it correctly and we could have an amazing home theater experience that is environment controlled with its lighting and what it shows. However current VR can't stay focused, the text in almost everything is blurry to my understanding, and it's not pixels are too big blurry it's that the focal distance for perfect reading constantly changes it by little fractions of a bit and you just can't keep up with that change. So there goes the people who wanted to simulate having a 24 monitor set up and being surrounded by 180° by screen.

Then you have the game or side where it's pretty much just a gimmicky toy at this point, there's really only maybe 3 games that are worth buying on it, 6 if you 6 if you include the interesting experiences but again this is $6-$900 you strapping your head for games that likely last maybe 2 hours. For me I fucking love gallery shooters, I miss that like gun games aren't the thing anymore and I'm waiting for VR, I either wanted 4 monitor which I'm willing to pay the $600 for if they can make it focus perfectly, or I'm waiting for to come down to $200-$300 and I'll buy it for gaining because God dammit I love riding roller coasters. But until one of those 2 things happen VR is in its infancy.

I'm more than willing to pay $600 for the best monitor all of her own, or I'm willing to pay $300 for a gimmicky thing for video games. I'm sure I'll get a lot of use out of it either way but I ain't paying no 600 to 900 fucking dollars for a videogame exclusive device, and as a monitor they can't keep focus so text is unreadable

A cell phone for case screen costs $70-$80 to manufacture

The motion controllers are also relatively cheap to manufacture, however if you want them accurate they cost a bit more. I could easily take the controllers being an ad in thing I buy later, or just being as accurate as a Wii remote, so long as it gets the job done.

In fact I'd much rather the controllers be something third-party that I can buy separately, that way the cost of the headset is cheap and I can choose what brand I want to buy for the controller. I remember razor put out a $200 motion controller for the computer that was fucking amazing back in the day, and if it cost $200 for the controllers to be about as good as you can possibly make motion controllers I'm okay with that price.
>>
>>60750790
That I watched a play through, instead of playing the game for myself?
I'm not against VR. I'm frothing at the mouth trying to get my hands on it.
I'm probably right about most of them from a Critique standpoint.
Note* I didn't see top sellers list
>>
>>60750236
With so much fucking lag you can play video game congratulations you fucked up. Google cardboard will get you by if you arty have a 300 to the $1000 phone to put in the cardboard to begin with.
>>
>>60750652
I would fully expect this to change. Either somebody from China's gonna make a headmounted display that's good enough to get you by, there's already a 4K display that's good enough but personally it's hard to take the risk unless I know for a fact I'm able to use it as a monitor, and someone's going to develop motion controls that work as good or better than vive. You combined the 2 of them and there you go you now have something cheap enough that normal people buy it with an upgrade option too if you want to have motion controls. Personally I'd say motion controls would be mandatory for a lot of the games I'd like to play but if a normal person just wants to boot up something like planet coaster and ride something to see how good VR actually is I can't fault them for that and at that point still be hooked and never doubt it again.

VR is supposed to be multimedia attachment.

It's capable of showing you the perfect size screen in the perfect environment for it whatever you want to watch, it's an amazing tool for people who are afraid of flying but instead of looking at all their surroundings they play a movie and can actually take themselves out of the plane and put them somewhere else in life, you don't like being at the dentist while put some glasses on your head and now you're no longer at the dentist but in a movie theater watching whatever the fuck you ever wanted to see. All you like sports will here buy a $20 ticket and I'll put you right in the stands in one of 5 locations across the field see you can see it as though you are actually there.

Video games are a very small part of what's gonna make up VR content in the future, for me personally video games are the most exciting one but I can't say no to having a fantastic viewing experience for any video I want to see.

And it's not as simple as mapping of VR think your head to make it work in a videogame. Some games out works where you have absolutely no control over your body at all, but the moment you have control of your body a majority of people get motion sickness. Look at resident evil 4 on the Wii, look at how they had to change the game to work with motion controls, this is the absolute basics you have to do but even that is hard for people to do because it's all research that were doing in real time now, this is into something that we figured out years ago and can easily implement if you're not retarded. Part of the reason why we have teleporting in the games right now is because we can haven't figured out a way to make the motion sickness not happen for most people, and teleporting around even though it shitty doesn't cause the motion sickness nearly as much.
>>
>>60750978
The only people who aren't frothing at the mouth to get their hands on it are people who have never tried VR in their life. I had shitty VR on my head back when sin was new and play multiplayer with my friend and it, it was fucking amazing, and all was doing was acting like a 3-D monitor. I imagine the controlling your head right now would make a driving game amazing. I see the motion control work that we've done and that looks like it could legitimately replace light gun games for me. I have the money set aside for VR, but I just can't justify it for how few games there are how expensive the games are and how little replayability there is for many of the games. I also can justify it because a big part of the reason I want VR is to replace my monitor with it, and the current VR methods just don't cut it.

It either has to be cheap enough that I can throw away the money on video games or it has to be good enough that I can justify the price point, and neither of them are satisfied yet.

Yes, and it is most likely accurate despite how odd it sounds. It's due to the G4560's very competitive price which could have generated high sales to explain the market share difference. The G4560 is a 3.5 GHz part and the biggest gains by percentage were made in that range whereas the slower clocked CPUs (slow i5s historically a solid budget entry choice) have dropped almost entirely across the board, by Intel utilization share anyway. You can drill into the CPU specifics on the survey page and see that it supports this idea with dual cores at 44% of market share (up 1.41% this month), quad cores are 49%, everything else is the remaining %.

If you were looking to do a platform switch+GPU upgrade on the cheap coming from a prebuilt/AM2/AM3/775/1156, you could do very well for very cheap and have room to grow. That's why not having R3/APUs on the low end really sucks for AMD fans/the market in general. There's also the matter of having the gaming performance crown (7700K) that draws people to a platform with the notion that they can get in with a cheap ($65) CPU and upgrade to a high SKU i5 or i7 later. Not having R3/cheap AM4 APUs is causing AMD to leave a lot of money on the table. Whether or not there's a very good reason for this is another matter.

>>
>insanely expensive, underwhelming first generation hardware with no games
>WHY ISN'T IT SELLING

Give it 5-10 years.

Seriously, until they find a way to ditch the tether, I don't see it taking off. And since latency-free 4K wireless video streaming is not going to happen, that basically means some kind of embedded solution is required, which means embedded GPUs and battery life are going to need to improve massively.
>>
>>60751147
>Give it 5-10 years.
>
>Seriously, until they find a way to ditch the tether
I'd say two years at the most. Given how much money is pumping into mobiles.
Screen tech should mature and wireless tech alongside.
I'm still surprised at the price of 4k TV's. Something's got to give.
>>
>>60751147
In the mean time you should use a Cable Ceiling Suspension Solution.
Makes it way less of a problem.
Way easier than stepping over the cable every time you do full 360s.
>>
>>60751176
See, that's the problem, you'll never go mainstream selling with these overpriced additional requirements. Ceiling cable suspension, 360 degree treadmills, an entire free room for roomscale VR, all that shit. People want simple. They want to put on a headset, sit in their computer chair, and spin in place as they play their games.

Wireless headset, good tracking, and games that are worth playing.

Wireless/embedded tech is 5-10 years away before it's satisfactory, tracking is pretty decent right now I guess, games are pretty much nonexistent aside from $40 USD indie tech demos made in Unity that aren't even worth the bandwidth to download.

Honestly, I have more hope for mobile-based VR right now than desktop-based VR. I mean, it's currently shit, but it's in the best position to evolve in a way that'll appease the mainstream. Mobile lacks in tracking fidelity and high FPS displays, but those are things that can be made up in the next couple generations.

tl;dr: Until we can make optical systems that can dynamically refocus light on a pixel-by-pixel basis, everyone will get nausea because the brain thinks the body is poisoned from eating something bad and thus hallucinating.

Sadly PS vr is going to take the lead even though they lack the horsepower which will slow the market yet again until maybe 2020 when a 1080 power can go into a console

VR is merely a stepping stone. We need technology that goes beyond that.

Sorry, didn't realize I could pay Steam $20 NEETbux a month until my Vive paid off, regardless of credit.

Oh wait, you can't do that, fuck yourself.

VR is fine, it's just completely overpriced right now.

Oh, that's too bad. I watched Dirty Pair, but I didn't recognize it at all.

Yes, you can. If you really want to you can get an external credit and repay it in installments. You can even drop $20 a month on a jar and buy your shit in two years when you have enough. This isn't rocket science kid, if there's a will there's a way.

>With so much fucking lag you can play video game congratulations you fucked up.
Not an argument, since mobile platforms are the biggest market for video games. If there really was an interest in VR then there would be an interest in developing phone-tier VR to use with Google cardboard. Pretty much everybody has a $400 phone (at least) and Google cardboard costs like $3, so what's your excuse? The only explanation is that nobody gives a shit about VR because placing a screen really close to your eyes is a very fucking stupid meme.
>>
>>60753571
Placing the screen that close to your face is stupid? You've never had VR on your face, the lenses focus it so it feels like the screens 50 some feet away from you. It's really weird especially when you know it's not true but your mind is telling you something different.

As for VR games on a cell phone, you're telling me these cheap pieces of overpriced shit that can barely browse the Internet without lagging are somehow supposed to create a 3-D VR game and play it smoothly enough to not make you motion sick and that is supposedly some form of gameplay there even though the only method of control is attached to your face?
People are too fucking self-conscious to ever do that in public, even though nobody really wants to be there on a plane, everyone has access to Google glass, and no one would stop if you did, next to nobody is willing to put a cell phone on their face in public to watch a movie. Yet you think there's going to be an interactive game on a cell phone that some of you want to play in their home with VR and no actual controls?

You want to ask me how I know you're a fucking retard or did I spell it out for you well enough that you understand?

>Uninteresting game lineup
This is the biggest problem. There are no good games for VR.

It's kind of weird, given the 'muh cinematic games' craze. You'd think people would pump out first person adventure games with a heavy emphasis on story for VR, but the library is 90% shooting galleries.

>no experiences that really make the most of it
>just endless shitty tech demos that cost a fortune for 15 minutes of dicking around

It's a niche gimmick that requires too much money and dedication.

Release an accessible sub 500$ console+headset or a headset for 300$ that's easy to setup and shit will sell.

The Gear VR sold well.

>But /g/ told me
So one idiot in a giant sea of anonymous people likes VR and you were stupid enough to listen to him, then decide to project that onto an entire board full of different people. You're fucking cancer.
