That mac doesn't even have a hard drive. You just need to boot from a working floppy. For that you'll need to buy a 90s era mac that has networking in order to get the os on it, because macs had a proprietary way of writing floppies that you can't do with a modern usb floppy drive.

>>60746675
If you're going to get a PPC Mac, just get a Dual G4 that can run Classic and OS X, with PCI n AGP.

There is no compatibility reason not to. Else there is a reason to actually own a 68k Mac (compatibility).

"Showing off" with a old shit PPC Mac is like wearing a pro autism sign.

>>60746693
Not bad actually. Debian with Gnome even runs on a '060.
>>
>>60746770
>"Showing off" with a old shit PPC Mac is like wearing a pro autism sign.
90% of people here would say the same to you for owning /any/ old piece of PPC trash at all, why are you so upset at someone for asking a simple question?
>>
>>60746693
If you want horrifying, I later installed Debian on a 6200/75 but didn't keep that machine. The PPC 601 is an interesting chip as NetBSD disregarded it as permanently broken while Linux had a small workaround.
>>
>>60746770
>If you're going to get a PPC Mac, just get a Dual G4 that can run Classic and OS X, with PCI n AGP.
You mean like my Power Mac MDD 1.42ghz x2 G4 that can not only run Classic, but dual boot into Mac OS 9? (Thanks Mac OS 9 Lives!)

>"Showing off" with a old shit PPC Mac is like wearing a pro autism sign.
>STOP LIKING WHAT I DON'T LIKE!
People collect all sorts of shit. Some people collect and enjoy retro computers. Don't like that? Then you're in the wrong thread.
>>
Why are macs such throwaway pieces of shit?

It speaks volumes when a mac from the early 2000s is worthless while a PC from the early 2000s could run XP or linux and still have modern uses.
>>
>>60746992
10.4 is 4 years newer than XP and has current browsers and free software ports unlike XP
they'll also run Linux or OpenBSD great
>>
>>60746992
Pretty much every mac can run Linux. It's just easier to slap together an old PC from old parts than find the elusive ones that Macs like. I once ran Linux on a beige G3, it booted off a CF-card that loaded the kernel which then initialised the better IDE controller card that held the OS disk.
>>
>>60746900
90% of people think having hardware for software you need to use is autism, specially for a platform with very broken emulation? wew lad, projecting much?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Please, you're on fucking /g/, which means you're a home user or hobbyist at best that doesn't "need" shit, you're either a jew who doesn't want to pay for what has long since superseded that software or an autist who thinks it's "objectively better" instead of just admitting to himself that he just likes it as the rest of us who run this shit do.

But man, what can you expect from someone who thinks he's hot shit just for spending the money to own the least old example of an ancient piece of shit platform that's been dead for 15 years and deluding himself into thinking that he actually "needed" it for anything else but looking cool on the internet?

No, it's just called "Mac OS"
>>
>>60749272
It was originally called System.
Then Apple retroactively branded it as Mac OS, name which it kept until the release of Mac OS X, when it was renamed as "Classic Mac OS". Then Apple went on to rename Mac OS X as OS X, only to drop the X later and simply call it macOS. Also, all of the naming changes are retroactive, so you better change your way of calling a certain piece of software or thousands of Apple fanboys will be ready to call you a poorfag.

>It was originally called System.

>Then Apple retroactively branded it as Mac OS
The Mac OS name is retroactive? As in, System 6 is not Mac OS 6?
>which it kept until the release of Mac OS X, when it was renamed as "Classic Mac OS"
No, it's "Mac OS" and "Mac OS X," Classic is just the name of the environment for running Mac OS within Mac OS X ≤10.4.
>Also, all of the naming changes are retroactive,
I have a hard time believing this and if it is true I refuse to accept it. Apple's already went full retard calling new OS X versions "macOS," no need to ruin past versions as well.
>>
>>60749319
No, it's literally just "Mac OS".

>>60749349
>Then Apple retroactively branded it as Mac OS, name which it kept until the release of Mac OS X, when it was renamed as "Classic Mac OS".

It was never officially named or renamed "Classic Mac OS". People called it "Classic" Mac OS all the time. But that was not Apple's name for it. It remained Mac OS, while the new one was Mac OS X.

The Classic compatibility layer, however, was an official name.

You're damn right I am, I was that deluded once too until I pulled my head out of my ass. It's time to stop living in the past and accept that these things were nice but they are not superior, and yes, a lot of average people will certainly consider you autistic as shit for thinking you "need" to play some old shitty game or use some old shitty piece of software that's been superseded by something else, and then jerking off to having the latest and greatest old piece of shit someone threw in the trash to run it.

Was great while it lasted. Fuck Mozilla for killing Gecko embedding to force anybody wanting to write a Gecko browser to fork Firefox. By far the best browsers based around that engine were the ones that used native UI toolkits like Camino and K-Meleon. The XUL-based native imitations employed by Firefox have always felt somewhat halfassed, cheap, and sluggish in comparison.

A 2013 MacBook Air. It was my first Mac, and it's still perfectly viable today. It hasn't even needed a battery swap yet, despite me having used the everloving shit out of it since 2013.

God, what a good year 2013 was for MacBooks. The 2013 MBA switched from MagSafe 1 to 2, and boasted several hours of battery life more than its predecessor. Then Mavericks came along and added a couple more hours to that, along with revamped external display functionality.

>Most 2013-era Windows laptops around $700-800 are complete fucking trash at this point (see above).
isn't that cheaper than most macbooks though? is it a fair comparison?
either way i suppose i wouldn't know, my laptop is from 2008
>>
>>60753222
Your fiancée's laptop just needs a reinstall or something, there's no way something that new is that slow.
>>
>>60753241
No, but for some reason most Windows users have this notion of a $700-$800 laptop being "high end" (even though that's firmly midrange at best) and won't spend more for a generic PC laptop. I think that's why that price point was used for comparison.

most users are idiots, windows or not
there are always exceptions with hardware, but on average, you're going to get more out of a $2000 machine than an $800 machine
in any case, i find it hard to believe an $800 machine from 2013, that isn't some shitty netbook/ultrabook, could be considered particularly slow already. it's probably just a junked up windows installation (even the fastest machine can be made to run like shit if you don't use it properly)
>>
>>60753209

Yeah, because owning PCs and Macs are mutually exclusive things, right?
>>
>>60753222
>Windows laptops
This term does not need to exist and is not correct.
>>
>>60753241

It's not an *entirely* fair comparison, but the overwhelming majority of Windows laptops in the wild do fall into this category or a lower one, which was why I went with it. Plus, people always kneecap Macs for being "overpriced", and say that you can get something that's cheaper and "better". Well, this was what happened when she tried.

>>60753255

No, it really is that slow. I did a fresh install when I installed the SSD, and I've checked it out a few times since. There's really nothing obviously wrong with it, other than simply being a piece of shit.

>>60753351

My MBA was about $1300, not $2000. And believe it. It's a 15" Dell Inspiron from 2013, and it's complete shit, no matter what I do to it. I've tried.

>>60753380

For what it's worth, I do run some Windows machines. I mainly run them for background always-on stuff like torrents and Plex, because proprietary software supports Windows better than Linux and I don't feel like dicking around with Linux to begin with. My house has more Windows PCs than it does Macs, but the PCs are all in support roles, whereas the Macs are user-facing.
>>
>>60753433
>This term does not need to exist
Yet here it is existing.
>and is not correct
Pretty sure a laptop running Windows is a Windows laptop.
>>

Sounds like you're doing something wrong.
>>
>>60753433
It just means laptops that when bought come preinstalled with Windows, which happens to be the entire market save for Apple and a pocket protector full of boutique laptop makers selling Linux laptops.

The term is applicable because normal people just use whatever OS comes on their laptop.

Hello Satya Nadella's 14 year old autistic nephew. I'm sorry, Macs are for affluent white Americans. Go talk about pajeetware Android 2.3 devices or something somewhere else.
>>
>>60753433

It supports Windows. It comes with Windows. It offers drivers only for Windows. It has a badge on it that says "Made for Windows". It's a Windows laptop, you shit-eating pedant. I use the term "Windows laptop" to contrast with a Mac laptop, because, when you use the terms "Mac" and "PC", some shitter always shows up and says "HURR HURR UR AN IDIOT A MAC IS A PC".

You wouldn't object to an Android phone being named as such on the basis that you could install Ubuntu on it, and you shouldn't object here either.

>>60753487

Because anything else would conflict with your perspective? Seriously, I'm not an idiot. I've done my due diligence, and then some. It's just a bad laptop, end of story.
>>
>>60753521
I just have a hard time believing hardware that new is that bad. I mean hell, I'm using a 2008 iMac right now. Anything from 2013 would be an upgrade.
>>
>>60753452
>it's complete shit, no matter what I do to it. I've tried.
then it was probably also shit in 2013
the point of this conversation isn't that every machine from 2013 isn't shit, just that it's recent enough to not be much worse to use now than when it was new
>>
>>60753458
>>60753501
>>60753521
You're needlessly combining software and hardware. That's why the term is flawed.

>when you use the terms "Mac" and "PC", some shitter always shows up and says "HURR HURR UR AN IDIOT A MAC IS A PC".
You shouldn't say "Mac" and "PC" either. Well, really you shouldn't use them together to contrast. A Mac is a PC, but a Mac is also a Mac.

>You wouldn't object to an Android phone being named as such on the basis that you could install Ubuntu on it, and you shouldn't object here either.

That's a pretty interesting argument that I actually haven't heard before. I'm actually going to now start objecting to people saying "Android phone". It definitely is a flawed term for the same reason, I just hadn't really considered it before. It should be fine to just say "smartphone" and talk about the software separately if it's releveant. Things like Replicant and Sailfish even make it pretty important to not assume things besides iPhones are running Android.
>>
>>60753551
The lower end got even lower. Ultra-low power CPUs are more power efficient, but roughly as week as much older CPUs.
>>
>>60753554

It was indeed shit in 2013, but it's only gotten worse as the OS version climbed, as is often the case with Windows. Meanwhile, my Macbook's only gotten better.

>>60753551
>2008 iMac

That's a Mac. They actually last. Windows OEMs don't give a fuck, because they know you'll probably just give up and get a new computer. Apple users have standards, and will walk into the Apple Store and fuck your shit up if their computer is garbage.

>>60753575

While you're at it, you should stop referring to crock pots as such because they can also be perfectly serviceable helmets.
>>
>>60753551
nothing in my desktop is newer than 2012, and i don't feel any pressing need to upgrade, besides getting an ssd, that'd be nice
8 cores, 20G ram, 8T storage. there's better things out there, but this is perfectly comfortable for all but perhaps the most recent games, where my gpu and cpu would start to struggle a bit.
>>
>>60753607
>Apple users have standards
anon please, i was drinking coffee
>>
>>60753607
>While you're at it, you should stop referring to crock pots as such because they can also be perfectly serviceable helmets.
No need to get crazy here. Any computer running an operating system might as well follow this logic. It's less confusing, also. If I say "ThinkPad" instead of "Windows laptop", you already have more reliable info from me. If I say my exact model of phone, the same thing applies.
>>
>>60753608

That's a desktop. Desktop hardware -- GPUs aside -- has advanced very little in the past five years. Most of the advances have been in power consumption for laptops.

And if I'm trying to refer to the product category in aggregate? Why would I not describe them by their shared trait: their default -- and intended -- operating system?
>>
>>60753653
I would just call them laptops in that case. A MacBook is still a laptop. If there's a case where a sweeping statement about the hardware of most modern laptops doesn't apply to a MacBook somehow, you can just say so in addition to what you're already saying about laptops.
>>
>>60753628
not trying to say it's directly comparable to laptops
my laptop is older, from 2008, i don't use it for a whole lot, so it has minimal -even at the time- upgrades
still, it's core2duo is still perfect capable cpu for common tasks, 1G ram is a bit low by todays standards, though it's not low enough to stop me from running things i want to run, just how many things i can run at once. of course the machine can take more ram, which i'll probably do at some point
it's worth noting i don't use windows, windows 10 with 1G ram would be pretty shit
>>
>>60753624
but generally speaking, nobody gives a shit about your PC maker in these sorts of situations. generally it's "mac" and "not mac" that people care about but it's awkward to say that, so people "Windows <form factor>" and "Mac <form factor>" instead.
