Is it possible to ever convert PDFs or whatever without giving money to those money-hungry scumbags at adobe? If it is possible, how would I be able to convert PDFs? Thank you /g/.

convert them into what?

pdftotext can create a text file which is very close to the document (without figures)
OCR tools can convert them into xml with the images.

You can create pdf documents with latex.

pdf is a compiled format much like executables
you do not really "convert" it, except maybe through decompiling though I doubt the result would be good unless you are doing something really simple like replacing strings
