Intel's core scaling is fucking terrible, ergo their Skylake-X lineup will end up terrible because it's all about more cores.

No, AMD peaks at 16 cores, while Intel is releasing an 18-core for consumers. AMDrones just mad that their precious Poojeet company lost in the core-count wars.

They already did when they released Ryzen, except for the i7-7700K and G4560 there's no reason to go Intel anymore. And the G4560's days are numbered, too. APU's will take that one out too, eventually.

Doesn't matter if intel's cores scale like shit and cost a billion dollars.
Also AMD always gets 64 PCIE lanes, Intel maxes out at 44. Enjoy your house fire CPUs and being a lanelet
>>
>>60740966
Intel releases new high-end platform against AMD.
AMD surprised Intel (and everyone else really) with thread ripper; more cores and features than Skymeme-X.
Intel gets buttblasted and announces several more HEDT processors above what they had previously announced, these are just repurposed Xeons.
Now the X299 platform is ridiculously fragmented as it has to support CPUs with core counts anywhere from 4-18, TDPs anywhere from 100-165w, PCI-E lanes anywhere from 16-44, and memory anywhere from two to four channels in one or two dimms per channel depending on CPU.
AMD chips are all consistent with feature set and are quite poaaibly going to be cheaper as well. Also its rumored that AMD's 16-core will br quitw a bit faster than Intel's 18-core.

TL;DR: Intel got caught with its pants down and full of shit.

>>
>>60741072
Yes, but it's very likely that the RFID chip is still there to validate the authenticity of the dongle or other (((Intel certified))) devices, otherwise people would figure out how to bypass it in short order. RAID0 is free, it costs $99 for basic 1 or 1+0 RAID and $300 for RAID5/6

It's a safe-guard against shitty coolers (or a dumb user) cracking the CPU die, which is very fragile. In this case delidding itself works as a litmus test of whether or not you can be trusted with an exposed CPU in the first place.
In order for you to cool a CPU die directly sans lid, you need a special bracket that makes it impossible for a cooler to put any pressure on the die itself, and you still need to buy a liquid-metal interface as well. It ends up being rather risky and expensive to save 20ºc, which they believe most people can do without.
>>
>>60741368
>you need a special bracket that makes it impossible for a cooler to put any pressure on the die itself

Laptop coolers have this since ages
>>
>>60741368
A lot of older processors had exposed dies, the headspreader came into focus when AMD and Intel were noticing that a lot of them started getting damaged due to shipping, and yes, also due to dumb idiots failing to mount properly.

>>
>>60741757
No, the TIM is designed to last as long as the cpu. It doesn't dry up because nothing is evaporating
>>
>>60741757
Granted the shit they use as TIM lasts a while but not for ever. it depends on how much air gets to it
>>
>>60741746
>>60741750
Solder's performance degrades over time and will eventually crack your cpu due to the metal expanding. TIM doesn't expand and is able to fill in all the imperfections because it melts a little at high temperature. Every time you use your cpu, the TIM melts a little allowing it to readjust and refill all the imperfections.

XFR is what Intel calls Turbo Boost 3.0
It's not all cores, because it respects thermal and power limits, and it can't respect the latter if it's all cores.

Threadripper, 3.6-3.7 all core turbo, with possible 2-4 core 4.2GHz XFR, but likely 4.1.

Not specifically ATi/AMD/RTG's VLIW.
Every VLIW is bad in the end.
They rely on compilers that don't and won't ever exist.
Again great idea on paper, but it never works in the real world.

Both AMD and nVidia have been burned by the VLIW bug, AMD got really unlucky and got bit by VLIW and Ring Buses at the same time.

IIRC Intel already knows about the perils of VLIW from i860/i960 but now they're being hit by Ring Bus fever, it'll pass in time.
>>
>>60749435
VLIW is pretty much what gave ATi its driver reputation, it's hard to code for.

Though I really wish AMD thought some more about the GCN subject and made it modular enough to separate compute from pixels
>>
>>60749518
The reputation was so bad even now people think that AMD has no drivers.
>>
>>60749518
It's not hard to code for, that's really easy.
The 'drivers being terrible' was a mix of actually buggy code and a slow compiler that wouldn't and couldn't be made any better.

ALL VLIW archs suffer the same fate in the end, for the same reason - the compilers required simply don't ever materialise.
Every company ever to go with VLIW has thought, well this compiler is a little slow now, but we'll optimise in the future (or even worse, someone else will optimise in the future!) but it never happens.

VLIW is a great idea on paper, but never works well in the real world.

Retards on /g/ kept spamming them and how AMD was so BTFO.

Fact is, so many cores is going to be under 4GHz all-core. And under 4GHz, AMD's architecture is much more efficient and jsut wins.

Sure you can OC the Intel 8 core to 4.5GHz, but then it's literally fucking 300w+ at those clocks. You could clock threadripper 16 core to 3.7GHz and it'll be significantly lower power draw and heat output.

Well there could be a reason for this. Keep in mind Intel still has LGA 3647 for their HCC Xeons which can have up to six channels of memory. Which they keep it as their main enterprise socket.

Another concerning note of the day is Intel could be working on a socket revision of LGA 2066 to work with the HCC compatibility of their coming 12-18 core desktop chip.

My guess is, why a new socket revision when you already have a high desnsity socket platform comparable to SP3/TR4? It doesn't make sense at all from an engineering perspective. Meaning more cost on Hard Tooling of a new key'd socket and chipset asic revision/stepping to compensate for more I/O.

You gotta wonder what the heck their CEO Kranzich is smoking right now.
>>
>>60750534
He's wishing he had a time machine so he could go back and order that new architecture 4 years ago.
>>
>>60741245

Once upon a time Intel and AMD introduced processor designs known colloquially as "flip-chip," named so because the die had been moved to the top of the chip from underneath where it had previously sat. This allowed better access for cooling solutions, and gave them more space for additional pins for the socket interface. The fragile CPU die was left exposed in flip-chip packages however, and while chips included foam pads at the corners to spread out the weight of a heat sink, oversized coolers or overzealous installation still led to countless cracked dies and people trying to claim warranty.

tl;dr: people too stupid and/or hamfisted to be trusted with exposed dies

I am trained in single corefare and I’m the top delidder in the entire Intelaviv Goyim Forces. You are nothing to me but just another framerate target. I will overclock the fuck out with temperatures the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit about Intel over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the MSN and your data is being collected right now so you better prepare to install Gentoo, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call functionality. You’re fucking bsod, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can compromise your system in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my hardware backdoors. Not only am I extensively trained in anti consumer combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the Nvidia® The Way it's Meant to be Played Corps™ and I will use it to its full extent to watch miserable cartoons from another continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, goyim. I will shilltel all over the catalog and you will drown in it. You fucking delid dis, kiddo.

How the fuck are you supposed to mount a heatsink on that thing?
I don't see any holes around the socket.
>>
>>60754774
For bigass server sockets like that the mounting holes are a part of the socket. Look at the bottom corners of the socket and you'll spot 2 of the mounting holes.

Wat?

>toothpaste

Wat?

The reason intel's shitty CPUs are having issues is not because the TIM is shit it's because intel hired a moron to design the lid.

They don't take into account the gap introduced by the glue which attaches the lid to the CPU, this gap is the cause of the issues. When removed, (and when the TIM is replaced), the CPU doesn't have thermal problems anymore.

If you re-introduce the tiny gap, you will get the same shit results even with high quality thermal paste.

Thermal paste can't melt steel beams, or in this case, can't bridge a fucking river worth of space between the CPU and the lid.

Intel are retards, but not because of shit TIM, because they hired pajeet to design lid.

>hot, thick glue
Is this going somewhere I don't really want it to?
>>
>>60760538
Broadwell-E, Haswell-E and Sandybridge don't have these issues.

Because they have solder.
>>
>>60760839

Yes, solder solves the potential issues introduced when the guy designing the lid has a stroke, but there's nothing inherently wrong with using TIM between the lid and the CPU.

Obviously solder is going to be that slight bit better (and maybe even last longer).

And I imagine intel's profit margins are bigger than OP's mom, so there's no reason for them to cut corners here.

But if they did it correctly, you wouldn't be complaining about the TIM. The problem here is not the TIM, it's the gap that they're trying to fill with the TIM.
>>
>>60761014
Actually a common problem is the lids not being on flush. Causing a corner core to run 10c+, or even the whole side.
>>
>>60740186
Let me guess, like most tests they did not test the Intel with quadchannel memory.
I saw one that actually did tests with quadchannel and suddenly the Intel wins, depending on the software by 10-30%

Go fuck yourself nigger.
>>

It's hilarious how you think memory bandwidth has any notable effect on cinnebench scores, guess that 6 channel Xeon looks even worse then.
>>
>>60764208
Sure is cherry picking ignoring the "depending on on the software" part.
>>
>>60764320
Are you retarded? Was the Xeon tested in anything else?
>>
>>60764362
It is like you are not capable of reading two lines of test.
>>
>>60764412

Where do you think you are? Do you think you're on youtube where you can sound smart by telling us hours later that quad channel memory helps in memory bound situations? Are you brain damaged? Nobody cares about memory bandwidth in the context of this thread, which was pure compute performance.
