Get a cool alienware gamer laptop from your local electronics store, bro.
T420, get a model with 8GB and you can do all your schoolwork on it. i use mine for self-studying (not in college) but it's more than enough and I got it for ~$150 including ram upgrade from 4 to 8gb and replacement battery.
are those worth their money tho?

Exactly what are you planning to do with it?
What games are you gonna play? (Don't.)
nothing too fancy, Dota, Skyrim, but I dont really need to run them on Ultra settings
Are the hp omens good?

If you need it for Matlab and similar programs, better find one with a better CPU, i7 or at least i5 6300hq

No
Get one of these. It lacks alittle of the gamer aesthetic just alittle but it has great air flow

And you can get it with a quad core

Most things you do as a student will not require much computing power.
A lot of things will be faster with a faster computer, but it will not impact your grades at all.
The ideal laptop as a student is something light, so you never hesitate to bring it.
Something that has a decent battery so you can have it running throughout a lecture.
Something with a decent keyboard as you will spend a lot of time writing documentation for whatever you are studying.

I used an x220 all the way through my master degree, that worked fine for me.
It is a bit outdated now, but I haven't used the new models, so I don't know how they are compared to the x220.
