Is there anything good about rear projection TVs?

you can take the giant fresnel lens out and use it to incinerate things
>>60732422
color depth. not much else. probably not even color accurate because of the shit contrast ratios.

this
Only CRT rear projection is worth it for the black levels when you're watching in a light controlled room, but you're better off getting a plasma TV if you're trying to save money and seeking good picture quality. RP requires more maintenance.
If you don't care and just want a display, just pick up some pleb Vizio bullshit from Costco (Vizio is apparently not that bad anymore but LCD is always shit).

yeah its good we ditched them
>>60732422
Back in the CRT days, rear projection TVs only existed because they could be made larger than direct view CRTs.
In post-CRT days, they basically only exist as a lower cost alternative to LCD and Plasma, and those really became cheap enough years ago for that to stop mattering.

the only thing that was good is that they where bigand light as hell compared to CRTs, after LCDs where a thing you couldn't give them away no one would take them
I always thought it'd be interesting to try and alter the innards in a manner like making your own projector out of an old overhead and the lcd part of a panel draped over the glass (super ghetto projection monitor).
for this it'd be more self contained. would be neat to use a screen off an old flagship phone or something high dpi to project.

You can get "broken" DLP ones for next to nothing and fix them by simply changing a bulb
>>60736765
but it takes 2 forklifts to transport them
>>60738267
It's plastic box full of air, usually on wheels.
>>60732422
They're not used anymore.
>projector gets misaligned
>bulb burns out
>hotter than a thousand suns
>shitty image
>encouraged overly large displays with shit resolution
>etc.
They're cheap by now and fairly lightweight for their size, I guess?

Can confirm. I picked up a 4k 48" Vizio from Sam's Club for $340 (because I'm a poor college student) and it's phenomenal for what I paid for it.

Does it do HDR? 4k in only 48" seems a bit much unless your viewing distance is tiny.

You can build a false wall, pretend it's a flat screen plasma and have a hidden room.
