How do i mount a cpu cooler to my gpu? Im going to buy one to mount to my 7970 not just for slightly cooler temps but also for quiter operation. The main issue im thinking is also keeping the voltage regulators and ram cool, or is that a non issue?
>>
>>60724219
I don't think you can unless it's a watercooler, but please share pictures of your attempt.
>>
>>60724671
i havent yet, i have taken the cooler off my gpu to replace the thermal paste and thats what got me thinking. Mounting it seems like its gonna be hard

I've done it with an MSI 390X and a water cooling block. Totally worth it for older upscale AMD cards. I used a kraken G10 and a kraken X61 block, worked perfectly
>>
>>60724219
Why would you mount a CPU cooler on a GPU?
Just buy a GPU cooler you shit.
>>
>>60724671
oh you mean aio, right i get you.

>>60724897
thanks pretty cool, is the mounting block thing mainly for putting a fan on the voltage regulators?' how doesnt the x61 go with mounting to the gpu? or is that done by the g10? also better temps and how much quiter? sorry for question bombardment

As far as I know, there's no commercially or consumer made bracket that allows this for tower/air coolers.

The closest thing is the NZXT Kraken G12, and it accepts a range of Asetek OEM all-in-one CLC solutions and works on basically all modern video cards.

https://www.nzxt.com/products/kraken-g12-white

So while the spin-lock H100i V2 from Corsair would "fit" (as it uses the same Asetek OEM spin-lock mounting), the way the tubing is set up, you wouldn't be able to easily cable manage it for the Kraken G12 bracket. The Kraken G12 bracket works most easily with NZXT Kraken-branded all-in-one CLCs.

Alternatively, Arctic cooling makes several GPU-based products (both air-cooling and liquid-cooling):
https://www.arctic.ac/us_en/products/cooling/vga.html

And Raijintek has the Morpheus air-based cooler for last-gen AMD and Nvidia products if you happen to use those:
http://www.raijintek.com/en/products_bycategory.php?CategoryID=1&SubCategoryID=22

There's a few other brands that also do GPU cooling, but if you're specifically looking CPU air tower cooler on a GPU, I don't know of any; only the Kraken G12 allows CPU-based AIO CLCs to be adapted to a GPU.

>>60724219
Mate, I suggest you get a proper GPU cooler from ebay.

>>
>>60724897
how are your vram chips not dead yet?
>>
>>60724975
VRAM and etc can take a lot of "beating", roughly between 140-170C
And usually you don't get over 90C, unless you're fucking something up.
>>
>>60724965
air / liquid isnt too much of an issue, but from what i can tell air coolers tend to run quiter, especially when fitted with noctua fans

>>60724945
>>60724972
noise mainly
>>
>>60724958
The mounting block has the four holes (8 are drilled into it) which match the mounting holes on Nvidia and AMD based cards. Inside that it has the spin-lock retention mechanism to hold Asetek OEM AIO CLC in that bracket right up against the GPU's die.

See image here, and look at >>60724965 to see how it lines up against the GPU's four mounting holes on the Kraken G12 bracket.

There's a 92mm fan which actively cools VRM. There's enough space between the graphics card PCB and the Kraken G12 bracket to attach low-profile heatsinks, like this: http://img.danawa.com/prod_img/outer_desc/group_266/prod_133349/img0002.jpg

The $30 dollars Kraken G12 is an aluminum bracket + bracket backplate (for backside of die for mounting pressure) + 92mm fan.

You still have to use a separate Asetek AIO CLC to get the watercooling action on the GPU.
>>
>>60725034
There's nothing in particular preventing you from purchasing Noctua fans for AIO CLCs separately.

And in terms of "quietness" or "performance" we're talking about ~70C temps on Founder Edition GPUs going to ~45C after converting it to a 240mm AIO CLC. You also bypass the (often 3000+rpm) faster/smaller fans on GPUs for larger, quieter, and slower spinning 120mm fans.

That being said, it actually makes a bigger difference to go to liquid cooling for a GPU than it does for a CPU, where a good ~$50 air cooler is more than enough for a CPU to remain mostly quiet, even under synthetic loads while overclocked.

this gpu definitely used to be load limited thermally. I'll post one of my benchmarks from the 10% overclock run I did. >>60724945
Aluminum Heatsinks and fans my friend
>>
>>60724958
Also the G10 is the gpu bracket, the X61 is the watercooler, and you need the G10 to hold the X61 on, as it is responsible for holding the copper heatsink onto the board.
>>
>>60724972
This. I have an Accelero 3 for my 980 and it's quiet as a mouse.

i sort of get it, but does that mean if you wanted a x61 for a cpu it wouldnt have a bracket or anything? Im just looking at this and i can only see how an air cooler would mount to it because i have no experience with clcs
>>
>>60724219
Just slap 120mm fan on radiator and call it a day. Did it my gtx280 when it own cooler broke down. Shit got both cooler and quieter.
>>
I successfully mounted a CPU cooler to my ATi HD 5670.
Not one too huge tho, roughly the size of two 60mm fans stacked.
If I wanted anything bigger I'd need to support the card somehow.

I ended up having to drill holes in the heatsink so that the entire thing could be screwed in through the original cooler holes.
It's pretty massive (cooler weighs more than the card) but runs cool with peak OC with a fixed low speed 60mm fan.
Could probably go with no fan at all but it's inaudible anyway.

As for ram and voltage regulation:
Me, I just popped a couple tiny heatsinks on that, fixed with a thermal adhesive tape and that did the job; although I'm not sure if it was at all needed.
Voltage regulation heatsink is warm but not hot to the touch during tortures.
And ram heatsinks are barely a degree or two (Celsius) above room temperature.
>>
>>60725340
avoiding the heatpipes? did you still use the mounting bracket?
>>
>>60725255
Dude, did you read >>60725062?

The hole spacing for GPU dies is different than what's used for CPUs (AMD/Intel). The Kraken G10/G12 adapts AMD/Nvidia mounting holes to work for the Asetek spinlock retention for the copper cooling plate.

Yes, if you buy an X61 it includes a bracket that works for Intel/AMD CPUs in the box, it does not include a bracket that allows the cooler to mount to a GPU. The Kraken G10/G12 is that bracket we're talking about.
>>
>>60725255
Well an X61 comes with a CPU bracket, not a gpu bracket. The G10 is the mounting solution for the gpu. Btw, the whole thing won't break 50°C, not even on that overclocking run I did.
>>
>>60724219
You can do this just fine with an air cooler too, just have to make custom brackets that fit the gpu.
>>
>>60725586
Cooler in question has no heatpipes, but I'd imagine avoiding damage to them is paramount.

Didn't use mounting brackets, screwed directly surface-to-surface.
>>
>>60724219
oh shit, a fellow 7970 owner. did you know that our nearly 6 year old card still beats 90% of modern cards? i mean it was like $600 back then but still, it has really help up well
>>
>>60725838
>6 year old card still beats 90% of modern cards
what? i got mine for $430 aud near the end of 2013. I feel like its been the best card ive owned to date, has a sort of never obsolete feeling even though its only got 3gb gddr5
>>
>>60725914
the 7900 series was released in early 2012 tho
>>
>>60725838
>>60726220
>a $600 card holds up over time
No shit.
