>>
>>60723416
I was looking for SSDs for my GNU/Linux.
They suck with full disk encryption.
Since you have to overwrite disk with random data before encryption, you slow down disk a lot.
You cannot use TRIM since it leaks data outside encrypted area.
Everything including creating partitions is problematic.
I will stick to my HDD, at least it has the size to hold multiple OS, torrents, and "just werks".

I have heard that larger capacity SSD's are faster by default. But by that much can't be correct here. Even stripping size shouldn't pay that much to it. If anything only really affect 4k.

Is it worth getting a SSD if I don't feel like reinstalling my OS onto it? I don't care about boot times, but general system performance is still important.
>>
>>60728581
No. Your OS will prefetch commonly used files in advance and there will be no noticable improvement.
>>
>>60728581
1. you can simply copy your OS root partition on it with any partitioner software
2. even if you don't and you have HDD operate heavy applications or games, it does worth it.

>6gb/s
gb is a gigabit. GB is a gigabyte. GiB is a gibibyte. 6 gb/s equates to 750 MB/s, which you won't ever either because that's a theoretical threshold for transfer speed because your drives need some overhead, otherwise they'd be making errors all day long if they could operate at their maximum theoretical speeds.

It was a shitty 80GB OCZ Vertex, but even back then SSDs kicked so much ass the difference was astounding. Hadn't seen a performance increase like that since going from 128MB to 512MB RAM. Even going from a Phenom x3 to a 2600k wasn't as dramatic.

yes, but it can make little difference in certain workloads
like if he leaves his machine running or uses standby, and doesn't open large files often (for example, spending a lot of time just working within the same session of a browser or word processor)

no, the only downside is that is costs more per unit of storage

How are people ITT getting such low POST times?
Is fastboot really so quick? Aren't you afraid to omit all the diagnostics?
Also my 850 EVO still takes 7 seconds to load system after POST (and NVMe is even slower for booting), so I really doubt all those 5 second boot posts.

For those asking if NVME is worth it, as per ever it's a case of what you do with your PC and how much money you have.

In terms of every day use, does it make much of a difference? No. You can feel it, but it's not like the difference you get when going from HDD to SSD.

That said, the price of NVME drives is starting to drop off. So if you have a choice of an 850 EVO or an Intel 600P, you'll probably be better off buying the 600P.

I've got both a Intel 750 and a Samsung 950 Pro. Both are blisteringly fast, but you really don't see much improvement over a standard SSD except in install times and certain compression tasks.

Relevant pic attached.

Proper speeds, so long as you're in a PCI-e 3 4x slot, yes. Boot, I don't think so.

Some people have managed to integrate the NVME modules into older bios files. You'd be way better off waiting until you upgrade.

If you're running Windows 8/10, create a VHD with a size of 200GB auto-expanding on use. Then install onto that disk.

Only noteworthy performance hit you'll take is on first install and updates (when the disk has to dynamically expand), other than that you'll be good. Best part is the disk can be set to auto-mount when you start your PC, and if you move PC, just copy the disk and you're off to the races.

I have the 960 Evo and I came from the 850 Evo.
Answer is no.
If someone secretly switched your current SSD to a NVMe drive, you wouldn't even realize it.
If you use creative tools like Photoshop,3D programs etc.. or often transfer big files, then yeah it can provide a small upgrade, but even then it's nothing that impressive.
HDD to SSD is a serious worthwhile upgrade.
SSD to NVMe is deep in the realm of diminishing returns.
