About to get my first rack server

Who and why?
>>
>>60718946
I have an IBM tower server. It's pretty much the same as any regular computer except I had to register for a free account on their website to download BIOS and driver updates. Don't know how Dell does it, but avoid HP servers at all costs since they require a support contract to download anything from their website. I'd suggest you look at Dell's support website to see whether you need anything special to download related software and firmware.
>>
It really doesn't matter, go with whatever brand offers the best support/warranty/features for the price.

Dell is a pretty safe bet, although I'd also recommend taking a look at Supermicro as well.
>>
>>60719254
>>60719200
What sort of specs would you guys recommend for video streaming hosting? I want to have a pretty significant user base
>>
>>60719315
if you have to ask, you cant make it happen in the first place
>>
>>60719315
Assuming your internet connection is fast enough, I'd say at least 8 cores and 16GB RAM. Depends on what you stream, if it's graphically intensive games you might want to bump the core count up to at least 10. Make sure the case is large enough to accommodate a decent GPU and that the required power connectors are there.

You don't need to be a Google Systems Architect. You just need to get it up and running. Most businesses are just smoke and mirrors, son.
>>
>>60719382
I think the term you're looking for is "javascript artisan"
>>
>>60719462
>wants significant user base
>thinks pajeet-tier code can handle the scale
I already know your little project will fail since you're going on fucking /g/ for advice. But love the delusion you got going on.
>>
>>60719503
Like I said, smoke and mirrors.

Are you going to give me a break down of some stats and why I need it or just sit here and talk shit like a jealous NOC faggot?
>>
>>60719538
Smoke and mirrors bro, just run it from a mac mini.
>>
>>60719562
So you don't know shit then, k gg thanks for playing. Run along now little faggot.
>>
>>60719562
this, macOS is proven to be the most stable server OS on the market. Why you would use anything but Apple products for your server needs is beyond me. Any serious company scales mac minis because Apple's innovation and engineering brilliance has allowed for this technology to replace traditional rack servers
>>
>>60719315
you might be better off with a cloud solution like AWS

t. Enterprise SW dev
>>
>>60719645
Most devs think they're far more knowledgeable than they actually are. They have the narcissistic engineer's attitude - as if they are God's gift to the world. The people who admit they don't know something are usually the ones who actually perform well.

Truth is most devs don't know much of anything despite their outrageous claims, yourself included.
>>
QNAP
>>
Just find a used Power7 server on ebay and use that
>>
>>60719382
oh, so this isnt just some kid trying to host some dumb plex server, you actually think you are going to program something to do this

go back to /r/programming kiddo
>>
>>60719624
I have considering that but I really would just like to have a nice private server to tinker with. I also think it would be a good hands-on learning experience to mess with higher end equipment. I could do virtual dedicated server but that's just sort of boring. And I want to be in full control of my own system for better or worse.

>>60719919
I already have my applications set up and written. I'm a developer, I'm not a hardware guy, not a server set-up guy, I don't sit in some server room organizing cables with zip ties all day to post on your reddit board. These tasks are delegated in the workplace. I develop applications, that's my niche.
>>
>>60719983
you can keep trying to say 'lol zip ties server admin XD' as an insult, but you look more and more like a tool

again, if you have to ask you wont know what to do with it
>>
>>60719983
If you really want a learning experience then build your own or buy something like a Power or a SPARC or Itanium. A prebuilt xeon server isn't going to teach you anything new.
>>
>>60720004
I'm just responding to insults with insults. Most nobody here seems capable of giving legitimate, well-informed advice, just pretending as though they "know" with some vague reference to their "knowledge" and condescending one-uppers.

Because this isn't for the company, it's for myself.
>>
>>60719983
well if youre going to do a video streaming site, youll probably need some cloud services anyway. no way youll be able to run a webserver + database + transcoding/streaming/storing video very well

>>
>>60720088
T1 in my area is $250/mo so I think that should be fine, no? If it comes to the point where I would need something faster then I will probably already be collecting enough revenue to solve these problems when I get to them.

I have a budget of about $21,000 for this server set up.

why is colocation so expensive?

jesus christ this thread is getting better by the minute

how are you going to explain to your parents what that noise is?
>>
>>60720148
well you could, but it wont scale well
>>
>>60720163
1gb per second? Why is that funny?
>>
>>60720204
not even remotely fast enough for anything video related
>>
>>60720204
thats not what a t1 is, and you are talking about residential connections which are not in any way sufficient to 'make money' like you think you will (which you wont).

back to the drawing board kid
>>
>>60720218
Of course it's residential I can't go lease an office space too. I'm not made out of money.

>T1
The rep I spoke to said it was 1gb/s

>>60720217
Ok then what sort of pricing can I expect for cloud service bandwidth for video streaming?
>>
>>60720264
yeah, 1bit down not symmetrical, and that still isnt what a t1 is.

ill give you credit for looking dumb enough to keep my replying, i am curious what bullshit you will make up next
>>
>>60720285
Ok so if YOU were going to do it, how would you do it then?
>>
>>60720296
put it into a fucking provider that is meant for it?

this isnt a fucking question, the fact you have no idea the bandwidth or cpu load of a program you supposedly already wrote, talk about 1gig down but have no idea about the concept of upload vs download, and generally are completely fucking retarded you need to stay in school
>>
Get on a backbone cloud you pleb.

So it will take them a little bit longer to upload a video. I'm sorry I can't launch a full-fledged YouTube right off the bat.

How much speed would be enough in your expert opinion?

And you also haven't responded with how YOU would do it. Would you buy a server with my budget? What would you buy? Would you pay some cloud service? How would you do it?

oh right, you are trying to replace youtube.

again, you keep asking these dumb fucking questions without providing ANY information and proving you are just making shit up in some hypothetical.

just your parents credit card for aws, but we all know you literally have nothing
>>
>>60720358
also, you dont even have a grasp on the concept of upload vs download, this shit is hilarious

I am here with an open mind, so I am open to suggestions.
>>
>>60720264

lol Jesus Christ.

Unless you called and asked them for 24 telephone landlines, I guarantee you nobody is piping a T-1 line into your house.

I thought these shitlords were being mean, but jesus, at least use google.
>>
>>60720396
>>60720410
Still waiting for your response...

>>60720518
Well first she recommended 500mb/s but I said I think I would need more. So she said "T1, 1gb/s is our next step up". Maybe she confused the name.
>>
>>60720537
youre going to need a cdn
>>

So does Amazon pretty much have a monopoly on the internet now or what?

>>
>>60718946
I like how nobody has pointed out that Power server is easily $16,000 USD. Do you want a new car out computer, OP?
>>
>>60720762
I have the money as I stated earlier, I have a budget of 21k
>>
>>60720786
Just because you have that much money doesn't mean you need to blow it all. Get the Dell or something amd64 based.
>>
>>60720646
there's a reason websites arent generally hosted from peoples houses. when you take a step back and look at everything you're going to have to do in order to host from your home, just for the novelty of kicking around a noisy, power hungry box prone to electrical damage and heat issues, you will spend an asinine amount of money for no gain.

You're essentially paying a ridiculous amount of money for a setup held together by half measures, and it will definitely show in terms of your service quality/reliability on your project.

You're probably going to disregard this post anyway, because you know best, but you are much better off renting a dedicated box somewhere to host your stuff.

Building a home server for personal email, media, etc. != Building a server for an entire service
>>
>>60720786
Just mine some memecoins instead anon, at least then you'd have a good chance at making your money back depending on how retarded you are.
>>
i want a 12 bay for plex.
i mean maybe 20 people using it at once.
what do i really need?
i'm assuming about 1 grand for everything minus the drives.
i'm not really sure what the specs are and how to look for them.
anyway i can learn more about this?
>>
>>60718946
Dell

Used Clones, IBM, Compaq and HP's too, but always found the Dell to be the most generic and most reliable.
>>
>>60720909
Plex the media server? Not much unless you are transcoding, then you'll need some real horsepower if you expect to transcode 20 streams at once. That new QNAP Ryzen could do it, else you just have to calculate how much bandwidth each stream will take to figure out how many NIC's and how many or what kind of drives to support it.
Uncompressed up to DVD=10mbps, BlueRay=50mbps, 4k=128mpbs
Should compute I/O too but not sure what a normal block is from Plex.
>>
>>60721202
that's more towards the end of the line.
i'd first need to get 1megabit internet or whatever.
but i just want to be future proof.
i doubt i'll have to transcode 20 at once, i mostly want to be able to have most running on original quality which will put most of the stress on the internet.

as far as everything else goes i won't have many 4k content unless i actually like the movie.
even then most will be transcodes whether 720p for blurays and all that. remux for stuff i actually like
>>
>>60721267
1 meg would be 1 limited quality stream likely and you'll probably end up transcoding it unless its a compressed download already.
>>
>>60721371
my fault i meant 1 gigabit. whatever is the 70 bucks fios is offering now. it'll come to my area eventually i hope.
that being said i want 12 nas drives in it, i saw that qnap ryzen had something like that but i didn't' really see any prices from there.
>>
>>60718946
I'm 99% sure you don't need a reack server if you ask retarded questions like this
>>
>>60719315
>specs
A lot of them.
>>
>>60718946
HP
>>
>>60718946
>Who and why?
Get the one with SATA support.
Rack-only hard drives and solid state drives are expensive as fuck, don't make the mistake to get cucked with servers that don't support SATA.
