This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

I have to ask some of you for advice and I feel bad posting a picture of my shitter in this beautiful thread. I assembled this watch and am really uncertain about which hands to use on it. I put some gilt hands on it for practice and meant to use silver hands but I am starting to like this hands. Should I swap them for these http://imgur.com/a/wN2ws ?

yeah i had a lot of trouble trying to guess what the correct size should be I just ordered even smaller silver hands to try out. I will have to think about using different colours; although it certainly does sound interesting. Thank you for your advice!

In case anyone was interested here is the back. a top-grade 2824-2 from ebay with a gold rotor from ofrei in a 36mm ofrei ss case with sapphire front and rear and a screw down crown. I didn't go for the blue screws and am slightly regretting it. Been thinking about putting the original rotor back on but ill wear it like this for a while to see how it feels.
>>
>>60707366
Two-tone with a matching rotor is exactly the kind of shit you should do with you own watch - I like the idea. The hands are pretty shit atm, but I wonder if some thin, flat watch hands in gold wouldn't look to bad. You should experiment though.
>>
>>60707645

I've been looking everywhere for shorter thin gold hands but its so hard to find because the dial is only 28.5mm. The minute hand on that watch now is only 12mm! If you know of a good place to source hands let me know as i am rather new to all of this.
>>
>>60707772
I'm not sure if you actually want the hands to be that much shorter, the problem imo is that the hands are too wide. You could probably test it yourself by taking the movement out of the case, removing the hands and then placing some thin hands you've cut out of paper on the dial.

No clue about any good sources though, sorry.

Not certain as of yet. I will take a lume shot tonight. The site said everything had "8 hour Japanese lume". I assume it's strontium aluminate based.

>>60708767

Those wire looking things are actually both holding jewels and those jewels are pushing that small gear.. what you cant see is the 320 teeth cut into that gear( with r of 1.2mm). Yet that mechanism is incredibly robust. Very impressive Engineering and manufacture.

So I got this case and I polished the lettering off the rear sapphire. The case quality is excellent although the spacer is plastic. The brushed and polished sections are both done well and the crystals are set perfectly. The 42mm case is nicer and has a metal spacer. It is only a few dollars more but I only have 7 inch wrists and 42mm is really the upper limit for me. I was going to buy the Ickler grade 2 Ti case(37.5mm) (http://www.german-watch-shop.com/watch-cases/for-eta-2824/203/case-titan-/-brushed-/-37-5mm-/-eta-2824) but it was 110 dollars more and i just couldn't justify it for this build. If I get rid of this at some point in the future I will build a field watch with that case.

Don't buy fakes if you do please never come back here.
There are far too many options for us to recommend without you being more specific.
Do you want a watch for work?
For sports?
For diving (or diving look)?
Or general purpose

Under $1k you're limited to shitters, Japanese watches or vintage watches.

See pic related for some cheaper options as for 1k you're not getting that good bang for buck

>>
>>60713695
Generally the SKX and promaster have been the cheapest, iirc.
>>
>>60713695

mmmmmm I don't know but the SKX007 has the best ratio of quality for price (and best resale value) of an automatic ISO certified watch from a major manufacturer, they are about $180

how much cheaper can you find an off brand that's technically ISO certified? Not sure, you would have to look around

>Often humorous, anecdotes differ from jokes because their primary purpose is not simply to provoke laughter, but to reveal a truth more general than the brief tale itself, such as to characterize a person by delineating a specific quirk or trait, to communicate an abstract idea about a person, place, or thing through the concrete details of a short narrative.
>An anecdote is "a story with a point."

>>60722942
Is this just a LARP thing of you buying high end watches or are you actually interested in buying one of these with real money?

But I would go with the Vacheron. For one, it just looks a hell of a lot better than the seriously ugly Aquanaut, the bracelet VC now uses is semi-integrated into the case in a very cool 70's style but they made it swappable with their rubber bracelets and alligator straps as well, the finishing work on VC now outstrips Patek which has recently gone downhill on their basic models in order to meet the demands of shrimpdick Chinamen, the VC uses a new inhouse caliber which is both beautiful and apparently really good, it reminds me of the Crusades and killing Muslims which I like, it has a cross on the dial which pisses of atheists, and it looks better in a suit.

I dislike that they come in plain 316l steel (as do all non-Rolex steel sports watches, really) instead of something like the 904l Rolex uses but if you can overlook that then go for it.

>steal personal property on no grounds / authority? maybe if your a fake watch seller or some dodgy shit but not if they just see you and know its fake

They do have authority. You are not allowed to own counterfeit goods in many countries, like a fake Rolex with the "Rolex" name printed on it. When you buy legitimate goods you not only buy a material item but you also buy the rights to "own" whatever intellectual property that is attached to said item. When you buy counterfeit items you never obtained the legal permission to have that IP in your possession, and thus Rolex (or any other company) is considered the "true" owner of that item and has the right to claim it back and destroy it.

It's the same shit with stolen items. If you or a pawnshop buys stolen goods, you do not have an actual legal right to own it and if the real owner shows up you have to give it back to him. Screaming "WELL I WASN'T THE ONE WHO STOLE IT" will not work in any reasonable court system. The "fake Rolex" you bought is similarly not yours as it is a stolen good in the sense that the Intellectual Property (e.g. Rolex trademarks) were stolen from real owner, and you do not have a magical right to ownership any more than that stolen bike you bought off of Craigslist.

Here's one of the retards on the forum where they spend $1000+ dollars on """""""""high quality""""""""" fakes and he got his watched seized by US customs.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

If you really must have one of these kinds of watches, go for the original.

Both the overseas and the aquanaut (nautilus) are shadows of the Royal Oak. Nautilus/aqua do better at actually trying to look different, but the overseas is merely a step above the Girard Perregaux Laureato as far as I'm concerned.

If you absolutely must choose between the two, the Aquanaut is also kinda lame. Looks cheap. Feels cheap. Honestly can't believe it's a PP model. If you must sporty PP go Nautilus. VC>Aqua, and I don't mind the design in isolation. But I can't shrug the feeling that it's a "me too!" by VC to chase after RO prospective buyers.

37-39mm Royal oak ftw if you really must luxury sports style watch.
So, 15300 (discontinued, have to buy 2nd hand, don't buy anything over a decade old), 15450 (depending on your wrist size, 37mm for a sporty dress watch, which is what the royal oak actually is, it's NOT a sports watch, it just looks like it), or 15202 39mm vintage homage. Hard to get a hold of the last one. I've been to a few dealers in my city just to try one on and nothing; they're all very limited, waiting list kinda deal.

The 15400 is just too showy. Too big looking (only 41mm, but looks bigger than it is), and unless you're a really big guy (8" wrists) it just looks too flashy and dominates the wrist - might be a look you're going for though. Also, same movement as in the 15450, so they've just expanded the case with a lot of empty space which I regard as lazy as fuck.

Overall, if this worries you, aquanaut is re-sellable. VC is not, at least not to the same extent. They change up the VC overseas too much. The aqua, nautilus and the royal oak stay more or less the same. Consistency of a classic keeps something a classic. Classics are versatile and timeless. An ever changing model is not this, and will look dated soon enough just imho senpai desu buy what you want it's your fucking money faggot

>are these idiots really that desperate for the logo?
I remember reading a few years back about real fake solid gold subs that were being made (maybe $10k?).

Not just gold plated, as in it was made out of gold, probably low carat, and then perhaps re-plated to make it more yellowy like 18ct. Movement wasn't a 3135, obviously, and yet there was apparently enough of a market for them that they were being made.

Normally, I'd think that it was just so that you could pull a scam on someone or something, but upon perusing those replica forums (great place to help you learn how to authenticate shit, if anything) I learned that yes, there really are some thirsty motherfuckers out there

>are these idiots really that desperate for the logo?

Here's the sense I got out of those the rep collecting scene:

There seems to be the usual thirsty cunts that just want a watch that has the name, but they don't have the cash to buy so they turn to fakes.

However, as with all niche hobbies, there appears to be a dedicated group of autists that collect the fakes for the sake of collecting the fakes, and obsess over all the minor details that separate their fake from the original.

Some will buy fakes of watches they own, and others will buy solely fakes.I mean all up they spend a lot of cash on these things and meticulously mod them to appear more authentic to the extent that it goes beyond brand thirst and into the usual kind of watch autism, albeit this time with counterfeits. I'm going to hazard a guess that this latter category is vastly outnumbered by the former that just want a fake rolex, but you do have a dedicated cadre of posters on these places that know all the minute details that makes a fake a fake, a fake a good fake, and how to spot a franken etc.

Anyone wanting to buy a 2nd hand watch would do well to extend their research into the fake collecting forum circuit, as it might just help you avoid some serious fuckery.

I'll give you that, but I take issue with the way they've decided to display the moonphase. I mean, the traditional way with having a moon actually wax and wane is part of the fun of having a moonphase. One that you can see all the time ruins this.

Not like they haven't done it the traditional way before, either. That Charlie Emperor's watch that just went to auction last month for 2 gorillion dollaroonies had the traditional moonphase window.

I also think that the time hands are a bit too spindly for such an expansive dial. But whatever, it's a start. Shame no one ever seems to buy cellini's though.

Speaking of moonphase, it's my favourite useless complication besides a repeater or sonnerie. Despite not being a lycanthrope and no longer having a gf whose periodic vomiting of blood from that ghastly gash I would be urged to keep track of lunarly, I still find myself wanting a moonphase watch.

The only decent accessible one, without any other distracting dials and complications, is that Master Ultra Thin JLC (not gonna count the Frederique Constantly shitter in this). The Ball in pic related always brings a smile to my face reminiscent to that of a retard child on christmas morn, which to him would be every day because he's retarded.

A glowing moonphse?! The only other watch to have this is that Lange special edition which costs the moon. Too bad Ball is a shitter brand, true and true.

Apart from the usual "swiss made in china" overpriced bullshit:
>keeps spare parts for <5 years lmao
Better hope one of those custom tritium tubes doesn't break off due to bad QC a few years down the track as they're not going to have spares to fix any of your shit. Dials? Hands? Nope. SOL. Yep no reason why the price might go up over time. They've just been making that same low-beat regular watch with "Swiss roll" sheet steel bracelets since 1957.

The issue is how much it has gone up in the last 9 years, during which time no major changes have been made

and a subby was $2900 in the year 2000, I seriously doubt there have been $5000 worth of cost increases for a no date subby since then

Chynaaar.

The only ugly thing about that watch is the date window.
>>
>>60727947
>No I am serious can you help me read this chart i think i may actually be retarded. I am not trying to be a dick here.

The chart shows the price of a submariner from when it first came out adjusted for inflation over time. So if you bought a submariner when it came out it would have felt like or been like spending $1300 dollars today. Back then a coke was 5cents at a convenience store, now it's a dollar. But spending a nickle back then felt like spending a dollar because you made less money per year and there was less money in circulation.

The chart is saying that if the only thing driving the price of a no date submariner was inflation the current price would be about $1300.

It is left to you to determine what changes were made to the submariner no date that account for the other $6700 in price increase. The price has especially gone up since 2007ish, during the last 9 or 10 years the price has doubled but few changes have been made to the watch, while inflation has only gone up 20% during the same time period.

No problem, for the last 50 years the subby has doubled in price every 10 years or so, that is what is being talked about, almost nothing has gone up at that rate.

In 10 years a no date subby will be $16,000, by 2037 it will be ~$30,000

If someone had said in 2000 that a steel no date subby would be $8000 by 2017-18 people would have laughed, but here we are

I like yellow gold as it feels more "natural" and reminds me of an old man's office full of dark mahogany wood desks, bookshelves, and paneling, and giant, button-cushioned leather chairs, like something you would see it a high end law firm or on Mad Men.

The dial isn't made out of gold, it's just gold coloured.

I know how gaudy this shit can be, but nevertheless I find myself attracted to this particular combo of day-date:
>36mm because dress watch and I'm not chinese
>everose because yellow is too bright for my complexion
>fluted bezel because why not
>black dial with batons for ultimate legibility
>president bracelet for comfort

For a dressier watch it really doesn't look too bad on a croc strap for times when the bracelet looks just a little too much, which I guess is all the time, really. It becomes significantly more discrete on a strap.

But at 33k+ and up to 4 months wait (or longer) to get one because the classic 36mm day-date is just not popular anymore in lieu of the 40mm china-style model (and no one but me likes black dials on rose gold it seems), I wonder if not going for some precious fragile little snowflake haute horologie piece wouldn't be the better buy. There's some nice contenders from patek, als, vc and all the usual crowd for that kind of money.

Whatever, it's all bullshit trinkets anyway I should probably do something more productive with the money, like buy actual gold.
>>
>>60729108
Two points against the 36mm day-date instead of it's 40mm brother is that the 40mm daydate has the awesome updated movement, and the links between the precious metal bracelets now have a ceramic sleeve in which the (solid) gold pins are inserted. Before, especially in conjunction with the hollow centre links of older models, this metal on metal could produce, if not the watch were worn too loosely and if never properly cleaned or maintained, an elognation or "stretching".

Be careful buying watches with gold or twotone bracelets because of this. One of the reason the two tone subs etc., are relatively cheap on the 2nd hand market is if their bracelets are fucked up. Same with old "bargain" day-dates that go for like 10k nowadays. Fucked up bracelets, over polished cases and difficulty servicing. Not really a bargain at all at the end of the day.

>>60728969
This vintage piece shows what happens over time to the nice fluted bezels on gold. Gold wears easier, and the fluted bezels don't hold up as well as the domed one. I don't think the platinum variants even allow for a fluted bezel because that will look even worse, faster.

Day-dates have solid gold pins and solid gold springbars too (the spring inside isn't gold though). You'd fucking hate to lose one of those jumpy little fuckers when changing a bracelet, wouldn't you? They'd cost a pretty penny to replace.

That would be ideal for me too, an the symmetry would make for a superb, uncomplicated and uncluttered classic watch, but the closest you can get is something without the day window, which is the least of its problems truth be told.
>yellowgold datejust (yellow only)
>jubilee bracelet only

Not much of a change, really.
DESU though I for example have always preferred the ordinary sub to the sub date, and just don't like the cyclops thing, it's not that bad when you wear it.

It's like that stupid fucking ROLEXROLEXROLEXROLEX rehaut on the new models; you can't really see it unless you're looking out for it. Prefer them without that shit, but what can you do?

I remember that you used to be able to chip off the cyclops with a flathead screwdriver, a hammer and just the right angle and force, at least that what the talk on the forums was a few years ago. Dunno if it was just a joke or whatever.

>>60729340
I don't know what to make of the brown dial, or that weird cognac dial. Brown comes with everose, green with yellow, blue with white gold and cognac with yellow. Black wasn't a standard for those strap-only line of day-dates.

Brown dials are weird. I fear I'd get bored of it in lieu of my usual black. And it's not something vibrant or interesting like the blue or the cognac.

There's even a cherry dial for white gold day-dates lmao. Platinum have the most exclusive dials though. Ice blue.
