It just looks stupid because that small three is representing a step in long division. It's a representation of:
453/6 -> 4/6 can't be whole divided -> 45/6 = 7 remainder 3 -> carry 3 over to 3 -> 33/6 = 5 remainder 3 -> no more whole digits to work with --> answer is 75 remainder 3

I was taught to write it out step by step so that little three looks stupid to me.

Therefore 75 x 6 + 3 = 453
To get the exact answer, divide the remainder by the divisor (6) and add it to the answer
75 remainder 3 becomes 75 + 3/6 or 75.5

If you are able to divide 453 by 6 you will know that 6 x 75.5 = 453 or 10 x 45.3 = 453 or (6 x 70) + (6 x 5) + 3 = 453 etc
