Are soundcards a meme? I got pic related for free and figure I'd install it but is there any point to someone actually buying an internal one nowadays?
>>
should probably have said pic related is a Sound Blaster Audigy SE

Sound cards aren't memes, they're hardware.

Add something clever to your pic in all-caps impact font and then maybe you can call it a meme.
>>
Onboard sound probably is about the same. Thanks for telling me the model name though, ill need one for a xeon pc soon.

Higher end mobos have good sound chips and wire routing as to minimize noise interference by the electrical systems around it. Cheap boards will use lower grade chips or be noisy. Bad boards will let you hear every mouse lick through your 'phones.

Internal sound cards are still very good if you really care about audio quality and want a decent selection of audio outputs.

External USB sound devices are also a good choice today.

Since you already have hardware, you can A/B test with some music you listen to and see if makes a difference to you or anybody else you subject it to for that matter.

Was considering getting a cheapish (maybe 100 dollars range) sound card because my onboard has some noticeable squeals and shit 8f I use headphones.

Is it like graphics card where literally any discrete card is better than onboard and how expensive before you're just buying memes?

Do not know about modern motherboards but I had to buy additional card for my 4years old pc
because
>It had cleaner sound
>It does give enought power to my microphones
>It does play louder and has cleaner bass
>It does support 2 microphones at once for 3d sound
>It does support 7.1 while my mb just front
>It did cost me just 15$ so It is not really bank-breaker.

I do reccomend soundcard BUT It should be USB one, much more convinient .

>tfw all my good sound blaster cards are ISA
>>
I'm under the impression that any modern motherboard that's good will have great sound which makes a soundcard obsolete if you were thinking of putting one in. However if you go with a cheapish motherboard a soundcard is a must if you care about sound quality.

Could be wrong about this but that's just the gist I get.
>>
I bought an Asus Xonar DGX for 40€ recently!
I really like the sound. I wonder if there was any better soundcard in the pricerange though.

Internal soundcard is good but the routing, interferance is still bad. Unless you buy one of those gigabyte mobos with soundblaster shit on them or similar you will get shit sound compared to dedicated sound card
>>
I use to not bother, but I got a soundcard a few years back and now its just as important to me as a gpu. The built in headphone amp is nice.

They have been ever since digital audio became a standard.

You want a high quality external DAC, not a sound card.
>>
no need for it to be internal.
You can get a DAC with a volume pot for extra comfy.
>>
>>60700183
I got one to drive my 250ohm headphones, I wouldn't say it's a meme.
>>
ASUS Xonar DGX is a good card. Better than the onboard realtek chip I'll tell you that much. Cured the crackling, distortion I was getting in some games. Audigy is also a good chip, not any "SE" variants I'm talking about a "true" Audigy 1 or 2 zs. The SE builds are kinda dumbed down a bit from the originals
>>
>>60700183
I mean I actually need one asap because my motherboards sound is trash. Max volume is distorted. Most motherboards have great on board sound chips though
>>
I can't not have some kind of dedicated sound driver.

Onboard sound is way too quiet. Max volume is pussy tier.

I use a Focusrite Solo for guitar, but it doubles as an external sound card and it delivers good enough volume most of the time. But I still find from time to time that maximum volume isn't quite good enough.
