Hey /g/ i recently got an old Gateway M285 from a friend, and I'm gonna install a 32-bit version of Windows 10 on it and give it to my girlfriend so she can begin practicing her digital art. Is this a good idea? Has an Intel centrino (practically a core 2 duo) a flip-able screen and a stylus? Also any good free digital art software?
>>60685936
Sorry OP here, forgot to mention I'm putting one of my spare SSD's in it.
>>60685936
>I'm gonna install a 32-bit version of Windows 10 on it and give it to my girlfriend
That's fucking evil.
Did she dban your gentoo drive or something?
>>60685961
32-bit processor I have no other choice
>>60685936
a lot of old tablet computers like that have special OS's made for them so I'd be careful that you aren't bricking the pen capabilities
>>60685973
Appears to just be running a regular version of Windows XP SP3
>>60685990
check the pen/tablet screen drivers and make sure they're available for windows 10
also Windows 10 may run slow as fuck on that thing
>>60685973
Also I'm installing windows 10 on an ssd, not the hard drive that is currently is using.
>>60686013
>>60685973
Okay, is there a linux distro focused around digital art? My gf will have 0 idea how to use linux/ubuntu/anything not windows
>>60686037
Ignore him, he's wrong, they've always had just Windows pretty much

"This Gateway arrived with Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 preloaded on it. "
>>60685936
Upgrade the RAM as much as you can and don't let it connect to the internet and you'll probably be fine. Maybe Windows POSReady 2009 would be more appropriate though.
Photoshop CS2 is freely available from Adobe (because the license servers were taken down). If that won't do, try Clip Studio Paint.
>>60686064
4GB is the max for a 32-bit OS
>>60685936
install gnome on it and use krita
>>60685936
If you can't have 4GB of RAM minimum on this laptop then don't even bother, it's gonna be slow as shit with W10
Get her a Thinkpad Yoga, those things are slick, it's gonna have a way better screen
If you have to be a total poorfag then get a used Thinkpad X201T, X220T, or X230T, all will run Windows 10 beautifully
>>60686063
>Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
what are you telling me then anon?
>>60686063
>Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005
So it's just Windows XP with a couple extra programs on it, the functionality of which is pretty much built into any newer Windowses
>>60686110
your image is an x201t
>>60686102
If that takes DDR1, I don't even think he can get 4gb in there.
>>60686110
This was given to me for free, I like thinkpad's personally but I'm not looking to buy a laptop
>>60686130
It's more or less the same as an X220T anyway, just has a 16:10 screen (though 1280x800) and a 1st gen i5/i7 rather than second gen
>>60686125
>>60686110
unless the Yoga has pressure sensitivity and driver support for popular digital art programs, just get her a modern laptop without screen capabilities and a decent wacom tablet
keep the laptop the way it is either way
t. someone who tried to do exactly what you're doing and ended up with a bricked computer and just used an a wacom tablet
>>60686142
Well I'm sorry to say that some laptops are just too old to be decently usable today.
That free laptop probably has 30 minutes or less battery life by now, if any
Windows 7 is probably gonna be the latest thing you can run comfortably, maybe Windows 8
>>60686165
>unless the Yoga has pressure sensitivity and driver support for popular digital art programs
Yes it does, and the latter is pretty much standardized now
Even the old-ass X201T has pressure sensitivity
a used fujitsu lifebook is the answer
>>60686165
>t. someone who tried to do exactly what you're doing and ended up with a bricked computer
Sounds like you just don't know how to computer
>>60685936
For software, krita is the best. There have been great performance updates.
>>60686198
ok go load Debian 8 on a HP tablet computer from 2003 and we'll talk
>>60686228
>Debain 8
Debian 8 =/= Windows
>>60686192
THIS
Get a T902, you can get one for $200-300 probably, it has a nice screen at 1600x900 compared to the Thinkpad tablets
T904 is newer and has an even nicer screen at 1440p for about the same price due to business lease surplus
>>60686228
>from 2003
Well there you go idiot, that's fucking ancient, no shit there's no driver support for it
A Thinkpad Yoga is from 2014.
>>60686265
I'm not even talking driver support, it bricked the computer
>>60686228
>>60686272
>bricking a computer by installing an os onto a hard drive
This simply isn't possible. You're just dumb.
>>60686228
I recently installed Puppy Linux onto a Thinkpad 760E anon
That laptop is from 1995

>>60686138
There are systems that use DDR RAM that can go higher then 4GB (My G5 uses DDR and can use up to 8GB). It depends on the system. BTW, that laptop OP is talking about uses DDR2 RAM which maxes out at 4GB.
