If the CPU is socketed then you can replace it. Whether you can upgrade is dependent on the thermal load the cooling system can remove.
Depending on the type of socket, this will dictate what CPU will fit. I was able to upgrade my T2500 Core laptop to a T7200 Core 2 and as the 2 CPU's had the same thermal output cooling wasn't an issue.
