Opinions /g/?

Ordered a cheap Asus x206ha 11.6 inch laptop for 269€

> Intel Atom x5-Z8350 (1.44GHz, 2M Cache)
> 4 GB RAM
> 32 GB eMMC
> Intel HD 300 Graphics
> Windows 10
> Weights under 1kg or 2.2 pounds for you amerifats
> MicroSD card reader
> Around 11-12 hours of batterylife with moderate usage (real use probs around 8 hours)

Intended for basic backpack travelling, so basic youtube, internet, word, movies, etc. No heavy gaming expect some old names like Baldurs Gate 2, HOMM 4

Intels Atom processors have bad compatibility and support for linux but i believe you can get Arch Linux to work on this laptop (reported issues with sounds drivers and sd card reader).

How fucked am I?

Modern atoms (especially the quad core ones) are on par with old mobile dual core i3 and i5s

They look really sweet and comfy, but not being able to run linux on it properly is shit. Would not buy

OP here, gotta keep the size small. Like I said - intended for backpack travelling around SE Asia. Portability is a major factor here. Any other good candidates for a lightweight laptop? (pls no Apple products).

HAHAHAHAHAHAH

Why did you not just get a fucking X220

it should cost 200 euro at most
a used 250 euro thinkpad is 5 times faster than this shit

And that Atom pile of shit comes with Windows 10 which is even worse than the worst gookware.
>>
>>60676450 I was looking at some used X220, but 3.31 lbs is a bit too heavy to be lugged around in a backpack all day long. Also the battery life is not ideal for the places I'm going..

Everyone who knows that should know how to remove it.

You have no idea how fucked you are.

In all seriousness, if it had a SSD it would be alright. Asus budget laptops have decent build quality.
>>
>>60676686 I really don't give a flying fuck about what OS I'm running on my laptop. Can it run Chrome? Yes. Can it run VLC player. Yes. Bill Gates is welcomed to look at all my sweet fetish porn on my laptop

On the other hand my battlestation is a other subject.

>windows 10 creator update
Sure it's a meme name but the update doesn't actually change anything.
>>
>>60676596
You can get a 9-cell battery that offers 8-9 hours of REAL usage time for a x220.
Also, that's light as fuck. Or do you have a debilitating deficiency that prevents you from lugging anything but a feather on your back?
>>
>>60676417
Actually you can
I have an Asus x205ta and i had problems with no sound/bluetooth etc
but now i have arch on it and it works fine
>>
>>60676721
Yeah the soldered eMMC is a bit of a bitch, but a better option than a regular hard drive. Bought a 128 gb SanDisk MicroSD card for more space.
>>
>>60676965
Yeah I was really tempted to get the X220 but opted for the Asus. The only real reason for the light weight is that I'm trying to keep the weight under 8kg (so I can take my backpack as hand luggage). Travelling around multiple SE Asian countries thru airports and baggage claims is a real bitch and costs more.

As i mentioned it works fine. and yea i should use something else than gnome...
>>
>>60676967
Really? From the forums that I've been reading there seem to be some problems to get Arch Linux to work on these x205ta/e200ha laptops. What version are you running? And are you running it with a SD card or the internal eMMC?
>>
>>60677067
I use the internal sdcard as a / /home /boot and swap
and i mounted the external 128gb for music, repositories, torrent folder etc and its fine.
i had problems when i tried to put /home on the external sdcard, but it was too slow for that
>>
>>60677067
oh and i forgot to mention there's a guy who wrote a guide how can you get it work fine. it was written for ubuntu but i can be used on arch too.

Hey great news. Thank you, I will be checking that out as soon as possible. Much appreciated

>>
>>60677037
Generally, backpacks can be 10kg or under.
Also, you'll resent the 32gb eMMC and Atom processor.
>>
>>60676218
Just wait for the next cheap laptops wave. Like this one:
Acer TravelMate Spin B1 $ 399.99
>Celeron N3450
>4 GB RAM
>64 GB flash drive
>IPS Full HD
>multi-touch
It come with Windows S but irrelevant since you'll replace it linux anyway.
>>
>>60676218
I own and actually rate the Asus x205ta which is pretty much a 2GB ram version of this. Only down side was ram and no usb3. But I was using it as a cheapo work terminal for remoting into machines and servers whilst also taking it on business trips without having to take a charger with me.

But for general use the size and weight really are incredible for portability and the battery life literally does last 10 hours for normal use. Old games are going to have to be really old. The plastic frame is quite sturdy combined with how light it is means I've dropped it a couple of time and it's come away with a couple of scratches/dents only.

Getting a big 64/128gb micro so card is a must as the emmc isn't useful if you want any media on it. The atom processor is slow but it does Facebook/YouTube tier stuff fine. As I said before I would hit the ram limit with Firefox but the 4gb version should be fine for you.

It was only £160 a couple of years ago unfortunately.
>>
>>60676218
>4gb ram
>windows 10

yeah it will be slow. win 10 takes over 1.5 gb while idle. if you use a modern browser with a video in it + another program you will want to kys
>>
>>60677396
This laptop looks pretty good actually. Shame that I can't really wait for it to come to the markets over here in Finland. Love the rugged build as well
>>
>>60677396
Also the price is reported with a starting price of 299$ not 399$ (according to AnandTech)
>>
>>60677548
Guess I have no other option than to kys when the time comes. Hah hah. Ha.

But no worries.. this is really intended as a basic task laptop. For all my other needs I do have a proper PC.
>>
>>60677522
Yeah the x206ha model seems to have slightly newer processor, more ram and 1x usb 2.0 and 1x usb 3.0

I'm hoping the 4 GB of ram is enough at least for a few years to come.
>>
>>60676362
No.
It's the original Atom but with 4 cores.
Single core performance hasn't changed at all since 2007.
