This thread is about the appreciation of horology, as well as the micro-engineering and materials engineering that are required to make a fine watch, clock, or other timepiece.

Not very but comfortable. The vintage watches (I have more) I've been saving up for years to get. They've always appealed to me.

However the modern ones are a combination of gifts and bonuses.

Hey folks, I'm new to watches. Is it obvious when you've wound your watch too much? I'm worried about overwinding. Can you turn the dial back and forth like a ratchet? Or just a single forward repeating motion?
>>
>>60662013
How do you like your 5227? Compared to your 1815?

I have a problem with the 5227 that really annoys me but my experience is limited to trying it on and looking at it through a display window.

Basically, I take issue with the way the hands, and indicies, are too polished to the extent that legibility, at least during my short spin with it, seemed to be hampered to the extent that, depending on lighting, you'd have to move your wrist around a lot to see the black mirrored hands on the glossy black dial at all. Have you noticed this? Perhaps I've just being autistic.
>>
>>60663186
Automatics you don't need to wind, maybe just one turn to get it started if it's dead.

Manuals you keep winding until you feel some resistance. You can then usually just turn it back the other way slightly to release the tension to ensure it's not overwound.
>>
>>60663186
>I'm worried about overwinding.
Overwinding hasn't been a thing for like a century.
If you have a modern watch, auto or mechanical hand wound, you have nothing to worry about.

>Can you turn the dial back and forth like a ratchet? Or just a single forward repeating motion?
What do you mean? If you're able to turn the dial inside the case you're doing something retarded to your shit. If it's an automatic, just wear it. It self winds, that's the whole point.
>>
>>60663230
>turn back the other way
but what if the crown is on a ratchet?
>>60663340
Maybe overwinding isn't what Im thinking of? But turning the mechanism on a (mechanica) watch too far doesn't hurt it?

>dial
my bad, meant crown

thanks for the answers dudes
>>
>>60663340

>>
>>60663223
I love the 1815, it's been my favorite watch ever since I got it. ALS simply make stunning movements and the finish is sublime.

I literally got the 5227 last week so too soon to tell as I've not worn it yet outside the AD. I will say part of the reason I chose that model was I found the white gold / black enamel contrast pretty striking (in good light admittedly). The hunters case is also cool as fuck. Also I'm a sucker for very simple clean dials, most people wouldn't even knows its a PP if I wore it and that I like.

Something like a Philippe Dufour Simplicity or Credor Eichi II would be my dream watches.
>>
>>60663394
The ALS and PP are certainly the stars of the box, very nice. The Eichi seems pretty disimmilar from the rest of the watches. What do you think of a Laurent ferrier?

>>
>>60663379
What? How can a 2824 suffer from overwinding?

>>60663378
>Maybe overwinding isn't what Im thinking of? But turning the mechanism on a (mechanica) watch too far doesn't hurt it?

If it's a handwind only watch, you get to a point where there's a certain amount of resistance where you can't turn the crown to wind anymore, and you feel that if you did, you'd really have to force it. That's the limit. If it's an older hand wind (like a vintage pocketwatch or older wristwatch) it's best that, if you start winding, to wind "to the end", as in, don't wind a bit every so often; if you wind, wind fully every time. Don't think it matters with modern watches and their modern mainspring materials. I was always taught it was a danger with vintage pockets with their older alloys.

If it's an automatic, and you handwind it via crown, it's debatable whether or not winding the crown on an auto too often will wreck the watch, as it's not exactly designed to be crown wound like a dedicated handwound mechanical. IIRC the construction between them is different to the extent that a watch designed to be hand wound has a more robust hand winding mechanism, but the same parts on an automatic are by comparison flimsier.
Some people claim to wind all the time with no probs, but I hear all the time stories of dealers and watchmakers humming and hawwing, warning people that you really shouldn't do that.

I've never seen the need to hand wind an auto. Set the time, wear it. If you need any more than that then get a watchwinder box.
>>
>>60663625
The 2824 is one of the calibers widely reported to be damaged by excessive hand winding.
>>
>>60663646
not overwinding though
>>
>>60663521
> The Eichi seems pretty disimmilar from the rest of the watches.
That's partly the point. The Eichi 2 seems so simple unless you know what's involved to make it.

> What do you think of a Laurent ferrier?
I only pick watches I've seen in person and I've never been anywhere that sold those. However that does remind me. I recently saw some De Bethune, a brand I hadn't heard of before, the DB25 series watches and they were stunning.
>>
>>60663394
>I love the 1815, it's been my favorite watch ever since I got it. ALS simply make stunning movements and the finish is sublime.
It really is very nice. I like that it can be dressed down easier than say the saxonia.

Did you ever consider any VC's?

>most people wouldn't even knows its a PP if I wore it and that I like.
Most wouldn't know what a PP is, and then on top of that it's WG which makes it even more stealthy. I love glossy black dials, but I don't like it when the hands and indices are polished "wrong". I'll have to go try it on again to see if it really pisses me off or if it was just a fluke.

Do you have a loupe?
If you do, or if you plan to get one, please check out the movement of your patek and lange and report back here as there's been some discussion around here of late on the relative failings of patek in maintaining an acceptable level of finishing for a watch of that calibre and pedigree.

If you have a cam with a macro lens, some comparison shots would be most welcome. After all, how often does one see a Patek or Lange owned by the same anon on our shitty /wt/?

Nice. The 56x is an amazing movement, one of the greatest series produced automatic movement designs of all time.

You should add a vintage Grand Seiko or King Seiko (Daini Seikosha produced obviously) to your collection.

>>60663960
The 5245/5246 has instant day/date change at midnight, but no protection against breaking the quick-set if you use it between 9pm and 3am. It also may not have had quite as much adjustment labour lavished on it as the 5256, which were the last high end mechanicals Daini Seikosha produced before the quartz revolution took over.

Honestly most watches will last a few years, especially quartz.
You /can/ get a Skagen and have it last for 10 years if you don't smash it.

The issue with fashion brands is that the parts are almost worth nothing. The casing and band in steel are worth more than the movement, and the one you posted looks like fake leather and plastic, so there's not even the steel casing.

If you're looking to spend $100-200 look at Seiko and Casio. They have a million fucking designs and are made well for the price. You'll find something you like.

>inb4 shill
Ever think they they come up so much? It's not shilling based on liking a brand, it's because this price range comes up more than any other.
>>
>>60669207

Not normal for any Russian watch, but normal for post-Soviet 24 caliber Vostoks. They run fast on the wrist compared to the timegrapher for some reason, but only that caliber. You have to set it anywhere between -5s, -20s or even -40s a day.

My Soviet-made 24 and 22 caliber Vostoks don't suffer from this problem. Nor any other slavshit.

>>
>>60674600
so I guess the lever is put in place because even if the watch ships accurately it's used for an easy fix for a watch slowly gaining or losing time as parts wear out right? It's not like I could make a Vostok lose less than a second a day, so what happens when the lever doesn't cut it anymore?
>>
>>60662925
It's simple but also time consuming, so most mass production manufacturers just leave it somewhere between their rated specs, mostly +30/-10s or +60/-20s a day or similar.

The thing with timekeeping devices is that a lot of testing and calibrating simply can't be accelerated, or it wouldn't be a timekeeper.
>>
This might seem juvenile but I'm starting nofap with the arrival of my first auto. I'll think of the machine tirelessly ticking away if I ever get unproductive. Hopefully I can implement strategies to work harder and smarter too. The watch is a SNK809. Thinking of it as a motivator watch too.

I see too many of these /wt/. Biggest offenders are chink Ebay specials with the chink SL68 quartz movement.

Reminder to always use batteries from a proper brand, and always use silver oxide, or lithium if it's a 3V. But NEVER plain alkaline.
Confirmed good brands:
>Sony
>Energizer

Probably alright:
>Seizaiken (Seiko)
>Varta
>Maxell

Use if nothing else is available:
>GP

Shit, avoid:
>Renata (prone to leakage for some reason, despite being silver oxide)
>generic chink alkaline garbage
>>
>>60675735
Varta is one of the best battery brands on earth and quartz watches are for poor people and subhuman mainlander chinamen.
>>
>>60675799
Alright, I hereby confirm Varta then. It's just not really popular here for some reason despite being a Yuropoor brand, at least not their coin batteries.

Also electromechanicals exist. I just got an Energizer 357/SR44 to replace the GP LR44 in my Citizen Cosmotron I had put in during testing. I wonder what our supplier was thinking when we ordered another hundred Sony 377's, sixty 364's and one SR44. Probably nothing.

Alright, that's enough inane blogposting for now.
>>
>>60675890
electromechanicals are interesting and there was a lot of confusion surrounding varta because it split up but the button cell division was purchased by mtc which is a very well run swiss company.

I mean if you're confidant in your sexuality, who cares?

Jokes--but not totally jokes--aside, why care if they have small faces? I have multiple vintages, no Omega yet, been trying to track down a Seamaster in good condition, and most of them are around old Omega size or even smaller. Like my Hamiltons, they're fucking tiny.

The thing on top of usually having great mechanics and history, vintage watches are a totally different look than anything modern. And if anything my vintages get positively noticed decently more than my modern watches.

It's really nothing to worry about.

surprised that no one on /g/ that cares so much about privacy didn't say much about this. it wasn't even a silly mistake, it was a targeted attack that changes the firmware f a random device from the motherboard, the thing is that the device, a card reader in my case, still works perfectly.
this same custom drivers applies to ssds.
there is a BT Volume hidden folder that you can only see if you plug it on a *WONT SAY IT BeCaUSE HE WILLPATCH IT*. That's where all the "custom drivers" (malware) resides, It ninja-drives itself on every usb or dvd you make,
If you use an OEM disc it takes it from the MEI (not entirely sure about this but he either flashed the MEI or replaced the dvd row firmware).

why the fuck would you want one?
get a traser or luminox if you want a tritium tube watch or that cheapo smith and wesson quartz that has the tubes that might still be the cheapest watch with tubes.

do you want a marathon so that you can larp as an american grunt soldier? fucking lol
they may have had, or still have, a contract to supply issued watches to the us armed forces, but most soldiers will be wearing shit like that cheapo timex expedition or a g-shock or suunto's.
some try hard will buy one of those fat marathons once and a while but it's not often

Seiko Monster is 4r36 and costs $220. I agree Marathon is definitely expensive, but that's most likely due to being a smaller company and the tritium meme.

It's called a meme. One of the only watch companies that produce tritium lumed watches can put a premium on it. Doesn't matter what they cost.

There's nothing hard about it. Get good lighting and a good angle and you're set.

And I bet Omega cucks ate them right up.

>>60684561
omega made nice watches in the 60's including the og speedmaster pro which was actually a tool at the time and not a "luxury" watch.

>>60685751
>helped to dress it down
Yeah, I can see that, might be a good look. Got a good place for metal bands?
>>
>>60685850
This one is a cheap $30 strap from 1988show, but I don't necessarily think it's the best for the money. I also bought this ~3 years ago so there could be new stuff on the market (I also did almost no research before buying mine). That said, I've had no issues with it besides the clasp opening a bit too easily sometimes.
>>
>>60685918
Thanks for the store name, I'll check them out. And research some others.

Anyone else recommend a metal strap design or that would look good with a /cock/tail time?
>>
>>60685614
I should add I can find all sorts of guides to replace an amphibian crystal, but not a regular old komandirskie. Any takers?
>>
>>60685991
what fucking guide? you press it out and put a new one in... you want a fucking guide?
>>
>>60686040
don't even know how to get at if senpai. do I unscrew the back and drop the movement out and push the crystal backwards out the back?
>>
>>60686062
you drop everything out of the case and push the crystal from inside the case out
>>
>>60686062
honestly if that watch has no sentimental value to you just toss it and buy a new one a crystal press and crystal and your time are going to cost the same as a new one.

>>60686157
...I don't believe you
>>60686171
sentimental is the right word but I really like it and don't have the money for a new one. I have a 3rd vostok on the way I bought exclusively for tinkering and replacement parts.

Also I got the back off my scratched one, is this how I oil it when the time comes?

believe what you want its the same for every single watch.... You do need a crystal lift and not just a standard press however...

Nah Seiko 5's are meme (cool), but the Alpinist triggers me in three ways:

2. Hour hand
3. Compass bezel

I hate dis watch
>>
>>60686363
well I just completely removed the movement and crystal, and snapped it back on. What's the press for, to keep it clean?
>>
>>60686412
you have to compress domed crystals to insert and remove them.. yours must be fucking destroyed. I was referencing direction in my original "pressing" post you actually pull the crystal out with the compressing tool.

>>
>>60686494
Sweet, thanks. Does it matter where? Im guessing not right directly on top of any moving parts?

Also I just snapped the crystal right back in, while wearing vinyl gloves, is it really that easy? nothing seems wrong with it. It's tight in place and everything. Im just worried I may have jostled the movement too much while it was out of the case
