Since 1990 a rolex no date submariner has gone from $1500 USD to $8000 USD

Inflation is the bottom line on the graph, the retarded rise to the stratosphere of Rolex prices is the top part of the graph

>>
>>60647142
The description of both lines is the exact same, except for the addition of "while adjusting for monetary inflation" in the red line.

This should mean the red line shows the increase in the actual price.
>>
>>60647146
You think inflation has caused prices of consumer goods to double since 2007?

more like a 20% rise anon
>>
>>60647180
Don't be a fag man, it was a casual conversation.
>>
>>60647183
>This should mean the red line shows the increase in the actual price.

The red line shows how much a submariner would cost today if the only factor in it's price going up were inflation

the other line shows the actual price
>>
Fucking stop that retarded pricing argument idiots, we had enough in the previous thread.
>>
>stop talking about watches and how much they cost we are so mad

/wt/
>>
>>60647192
That's exactly what that chart implies.

>>60647209
>The red line shows how much a submariner would cost today if the only factor in it's price going up were inflation
Then the description of that line is misleading.
>>
>>60647076
The chart shows a 7x increase. From around $180 to around $1200 (inflation adjusted).

It means if rolexes were to be sold in 1960 for the (inflation adjusted) equivalent of the price they sell today, it'd be 7 times as much.
>>
>>60647238
>Then the description of that line is misleading.
No it's not, it's starting with the original historical price of a subby and showing you that price adjusted for inflation over the years

the other line is the real price without taking inflation or anything into account

they are put together to highlight the massive disparity
>>
>>60647231
But we already had this discussion just a moment ago. Why repeat it?
>>
>>60647250
The way the chart is worded, the red line shows the price increase adjusted for inflation.

Meaning the price increase minus inflation.

>>60647267
>No it's not, it's starting with the original historical price of a subby and showing you that price adjusted for inflation over the years

If a chart says "price increase adjusting for inflation", then it's supposed to show the increase in price adjusting for inflation.

In this case however, it shows the price increase as it would be if CAUSED ONLY BY inflation.

It is a Seiko 5s21-7a10. They were made by Seiko for a few years around 1990. The 5s21 has a 4hz quartz movement with a small vial of liquid in the movement that damps the second hand, resulting in a truly smooth sweep.

Why have no traditional watch manufacturers tried to add simple fitbit style functionality to their watches? I don't need to read CNN on my wrist, but seeing texts and calls and maybe reminders or other similar alerts would be useful.

I don't go to church anymore, OP. I used to be a Catholic but I felt pretty lost in the collective religion part of it. I still believe in God, but I don't know if there are any churches worth my time. They all seem so watered down. They believe homos are cool, and that the Jews are God's "chosen people." I don't know, it just seems that I'll actually get pulled away more from God if I go to church. They literally don't even believe that Satan exists.

I love vintage watches, you can get some amazing premium brands for a fraction of new prices, that still look classy today.

One thing to note is that older watches were much smaller back then so 33/34mm is the norm so if you have a large wrist that could be a problem.

Currently putting 100 a month away for something nice, in the 5000-8000 range got about 4200 saved. And a vintage Seamaster like; >>60650492 & >>60650604.
It's very do able.

Speaking of; >>60650492 >>60650604, where'd you guys get them and how much? Pretty much exactly what I've been looking for. Though I don't even need the black dial.
Been WATCHing eBay randomly from time to time, but can't find anything in good condition. Got any tips?
>>
Any reason why I shouldn't buy the Sinn 356 Sa Flieger if I find a good deal?

I was looking at the 358 but nearly $3500 for an ETA, Sinn can fuck right off.

Doesn't have the tegimented steel, the AR filled case or the sulfate capsule. If you want autistic german engineering, might as well go all the way.
>>
>>60651838

For an ETA though?

Also the vast majority of their tegmented case watches are horrid to me. I think all the watches that have Sinn tech are over $2k.

The 356 at the very least has some appeal and I can find one for a little over $1k, which is about right.

If I were looking at the $2k+ range I'd go for a Grand Seiko.

Look into damasko too. Their A35/H35 movement is technically 'modified' but the modifications they did are extensive. They use their own silicon escape wheel, hairspring, balance wheel, the balance is free sprung, and has gyromax regulators.

I found a nice vintage omega locally but ebay does have some gems. You have to keep at it. chrono24 has some good stuff from time to time as well. Only buy something you would feel confident putting on the moment it comes in the mail.. don't ever purchase a watch that needs or even may need work..

My girlfriend is looking for an affordable watch and fashionable watch. She doesn't give a shit about movements, only cares about the size. I gave her a Timex Weekender as a beater but stopped wearing that because it was too big, both in thickness and lug width. Any suggestions?

Unironically, buy her a Michael Kors.

Around 90-100$, it's a brand she (and her friends<--very important) recognise and consider "upscale", look good and chic, decently thin and small.

Obviously shitty quartz, but girls wear watches like they wear their bags, they put it on when they go out, and leave it in the stand when they come back in, so quartz is more convenient.

I know that you might be looking at Seikos and Orients and whatnot for something decent (as I did, I was even considering a Jazzmaster), but in the end she'll get excited with the fashion brand much more.

Speaking from experience.

I have to disagree there.
If you know what you're looking for that's just what you should do. I have two (had 3) pre 1960 Hamiltons that I got fixed up. Sold 1 to a collector I know for just under the cost of fixing them all up.

Anyway, I know shit about Seamasters or Omega in general, so I'd probably take your advice in this case.
But eBay, I'd never be sure. People lie out the ass. I've had to deal with that before.
So, guess I just keep checking chrono and eBay. Hasn't been fruitful so far.

>>60652494
>over a year

>buy the seller
Got any recommendations? I've had trouble with a top rated before, so personal experience would be appriciated.
>>
>>60654328
Look for a "fake" on aliexpress. The good ones are just as good as a genuine dw and are probably the real deal.
>>
>>60648710
I feel like Fake Watch Busta would make you kill yourself.
>>
>>60654511
If you buy a used watch expect it to need a service and price it in, even if the seller says it was just serviced, unless the seller has a service receipt from a major manufacturer (swatch, richemont, etc) with the watch's serial on it. Only exception is buying a watch directly from your watchmaker that your watchmaker just serviced.

When buying the seller, look for excellent feedback and a decent return policy. Ask the seller a question and gauge the response. It almost doesn't matter what - if the seller won't communicate with you before you buy, they will certainly not do so after you buy. If a seller can't give you a decent answer to a simple question (you list diameter, but what is the thickness and lug to lug? is that smudge at 7 o'clock on the crystal or on the dial? etc)

If you're going to be buying vintage watches invest in a timegrapher. A cheap Chinese one can be had for $150 or less and will allow you to quickly determine whether the watch is running decently.

Don't buy often-faked watches online (Rolex, speedmaster, Cartier, navitimer, etc) unless you are willing to put in serious work learning how to spot fakes and Frankensteins. In general buying vintage, you may get stuck with redials - doesn't really bother me but if it bothers you you will have to out in a lot of work to avoid them.

You'll likely scratch or bend the hands if you try to use tweezers. You don't need the big hand presser though, pic is good enough.

Though what's more important is having a hand remover tool. And don't forget to put a plastic bag on the dial and hands when removing, or you'll scratch the whole shit up.

>>
>>60659744
You don't need a press, but there's a specific process you must follow:

1) take the dial in your left hand (perch on fingertips, face side up)
2) place the movement and the loose hands in the cupped palm of that same left hand
3) take the case + bracelet + caseback (attached) in your right hand
4) walk over to the kitchen
5) open the trash can
6) drop everything in there
7) delete all evidence you ever owned that piece of shit and never speak of it again

Let me know if this works!

Japs aren't really into piracy and they also love their dvd's and other physical media. When I was in Japland I used to have a netflix account, but the selection was utter shite, apparently the Japanese don't like stremable media

I know it's an utter shitter, however I see it as more for practice rather than actual wanting to fix up the thing. Probably will gift it to my little brother afterwards, he's 9 so he'll think it's cool

Yes it's Lange's new "budget" model. Probably the cheapest "haute horologie" model out there. Hopefully they didn't skimp on the finishing.

It's an attempt to lure in a younger crowd that want more than a denzel washington. Well, that and the fact that they're seeing the writing on the wall that the china gravy train is coming to a slow stop. Patek lowered it's NA prices last year, and watchmakers are coming out with "normal" sized watches again after a decade of that ridiculous fuckhuge meme driven by the materialism obsessed statustotem-seekers that have been their best customers (chinese again).

HH are realising that their prices that have reached stratospheric levels of ridiculousness aren't sustainable. Hopefully we see more "entry level" models come out.

Considering Lange don't even make their own cases, hands or dials (they're basically a fancy movement maker), one would hope that their stuff could be even cheaper. I don't know what to feel about that. At least Patek, with all its apparent faults that seem to be bubbling up, makes its own shit.

JLC seem to be the only maker offering some good models, calenders etc, at not insane prices but I've heard horror stories about their servicing (which I haven't suffered from so I can't comment)

I never liked Breitling. Rolex wearers have a certain stigma about them, at least in the popular consciousness: you're either a douche (submariner -oh so orignal mr.bond!) or, if it's gold, a nouveau riche douche or used car salesman/small-time gangster or nigger rapper shit if it's gold and massive (not limited to rolex anymore). Thing is, though this was an image I had in my mind for some reason, I rarely ever saw it. Normal people wear rolex; and they're not all in those above categories of scum.

However, every breitling I've ever seen being worn, and all those that linger around a breitling counter at any watch store I've ever been in, have all fit into the same category:

Fat, middleaged, balding, clothes too tight.

This is not limited to one country or city, it's everywhere I've been. Every airport and flight lounge, where you see hundreds of people: oh what's that watch that midlifecrisiser is wearing? Breitling, of course.

No one even cared about the breitling a bond wore: it was lost for years in someone's junk, forgotten for decades.

Sad that another private watch brand has been bought by some other finance group, though.

The fact that they released a steel perpetual calendar with moonphase for "cheap" is really something, a portent of the whole industry perhaps. Too tentative about buying them, as tempting as they are. Too delicate, can't wear all the time etc., and of course, as you say, the servicing horror stories.

I think frederique constant may have come out with a perp.cal that's the cheapest around - $10k cheaper on list price than the JLC, even less on street since FC are shitters from a shitter company that won't sell and are fucking gold plated lmao, they were even paying their staff in watches by the end because of no cash.

Perhaps citizen will sort them out. Fuck, I'd be way more inclined to buy a citizen perp.calendar, or any of their chronomaster "The Citizen" models over any FC with it's totally derivative styling and lack of any real pedigree. Only Maurice Lacroix is worse in this regard. You know how they named that company? Marketing guy that founded it just chose two french names at random to make it sound "fancy" and established and legitimate, as if it were some old and hallowed swiss brand named after the original founders and horologists. Nope. Might have been the name of the janitor in the building in which he worked, but no one's sure. Fred Constant is the name of the husband and wife founders' grand parents, one of whom has a tenuous link to watchmaking. Dumb (but not as bad as Maurice Lafake).

Various Chinese companies make "perpetual calendar" watches, but I've never seen one in person, so I don't know if they're all full of shit.
