Rather than creating gorillion threads for questions that can be answered in 1-2 posts, post them there.

-take at least 10 seconds to enter your problem in a search engine
-don't bump the thread, you are not entitled to an answer and a lot of people look for posts without replies

I recently reformatted my computer from windows 7 to 10, and I chose not to keep any of my old files. When I looked at my hard drive space for the computer, it was exactly the same as before. I looked at what was taking up space and there's a huge file saying titled "windows old" with 300gigs of my old stuff.

Not sure why it was kept when I picked to remove it when I reformatted, but is it safe for me to just delete the file?

Of course. You can still scavenge any stuff you might need then delete the rest.

There are plenty of ways to wipe free space if this is a concern.

My phone is an LG V10 (VS990). I've had no problems with it for the past year and some change, but today it became a brick. It was working, froze, and shut down. For about an hour after this, I tried restarting it several times and a few times it would vibrate and show the booting screen, then go black again. I tried replacing the battery; that wasn't it. Now, I can't even get it to even try to boot, it's just constant black screen. The guy at the phone store said his best guess is the processor is toast.

My first question is, is there anything I should try to fix it or is it just a lost cause?
If it is just a brick and I have to get a replacement V10, is there any way to move over my old memory onto the new one, or recover the files from it? I didn't have the foresight to make a backup even though I know better.

You should always use digital displays with digital interfaces if available.

-digital interfaces provide support for higher resolutions
-if you connect a digital monitor via VGA, an analog transmission, you have to convert from digital to analogue then back resulting in extra work and possible performance loss
-better picture quality, no need to "auto-set"

My computer keeps crashing to blue screen, browser tabs will randomly crash, etc.
Most of the errors are related to paging or RAM, but I replaced the RAM and it didn't fix the issue (Also ran memtest on both old and new RAM, no errors on 4 passes)
Then I thought it might be the HDD because of paging/driver errors, but I tried a different hard drive and the same things keep happening (but less often maybe).
It'll sometimes run for a whole day without any errors, sometimes it won't make it to the desktop without crashing.

C++ is a really big language.
It may have begun as C with Classes, but now it's C with Classes, RAII, Templates, STL, Lambdas, Move Semantics and much moreâ„¢.
Jumping into C++ expecting C with Java-style OOP would be a mistake. So much is added that by the end, it comes out looking nothing like C.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C_file_input/output
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_streams
>>
>>60663234

That's what standard input and standard output are.
The text result that pops out of a command line utility when it runs is the standard output. And whatever you type while it's running is the standard input.

When you #inculde <stdio.h>, you're including the declarations of a whole bunch of useful functions for using standard input and output.
>>
>>60663282
c's stdio also does file access (abstracted as streams like stdin/out/err)
one could make a program without it, but it'd be a pretty unique program

Would you say that #include is basically like a "compacted" "command"? Like, what is implied in the #include "commands" could be "expanded" into several "lines" of "programming"?
And what would happen if I somehow disable those things to load when I start "programming"?
>>
>>60663327

The C preprocessor replaces the #include statement with the contents of the included file before compilation begins.

New FireFox version are shit, bloated, and slow af. Recently switched to Waterfox (53.0), everything works except for some random errors, (for example rendering pages with text and images, usually some large pixels gets black, I have this same error with Firefox).

Palemoon is based on FireFox 20 source code, so probably you will get used faster, stable and secure.

>>
>>60664645
A header includes a file that has classes, functions, etc.
#include <iostream>
will give you access to std::cout

A namespace is if you are lazy and don't want to write what class every function is in.
using namespace std;
will allow you to write cout and it will check the namespaces you used to see if a cout function exists in one of the namespaces. It will find an std::cout and will use that.

Namespaces can cause issues with multiple functions from different places being named the same thing.
>>
>>60664722

Header files are how you obtain your declarations physically, but namespaces are how they are logically accessed.

A header file could declare functions/classes/whatever, wherever it wants. Often a set of related headers could define functions within the same namespace, but they could also have individiaul namespaces or just be completely free.

I still don't really get it.
So header files are replaced by the compiler so they are technically in the source code you wrote yourself when it compiles?
But I don't understand how namespaces are what is "logically accessed" vs "physically accessed".

>So header files are replaced by the compiler so they are technically in the source code you wrote yourself when it compiles?
Almost. The C preprocessor alters the file you're compiling before it even reaches the compiler. The C preprocessor is very dumb - you cannot say "cout" from "iostream", because by the time it reaches the compiler all mention of "iostream" have been chewed up and spat out by the preprocessor.

All of the declarations come from different files. So the C++ standard library has various header files like <iostream>, <vector>, whatever you need. That's where your definitions physically come from.

Inside those headerfiles, members of the namespace std are declared. To use those declarations, you do std::cout or std::vector or std::whatever. Logically (and symbollically) speaking, all those declarations declare things in std. std is the banner they are organised under, and that's what your code uses.

There doesn't have to be a relation between headers and namespaces, but there generally is one.

I think I get it a bit better now.
I didn't realise std:: meant it was accessing the namespace.
Are C# namespaces different then because they don't require the explicit definition of the namespace when calling its members?
>>
>>60665071

C# namespaces are different, they work like Java packages more than C++ namespaces.

If you're in a namespace, then you don't need to mention that you're using something else from that namespace. You'll notice that the same happens for classes. But if you're outside that namespace/class, you either need an explicit qualification or using statement.
namespace foo
{
void bar()
{
std::cout << "Hello, World!" << std::endl;
}
void baz()
{
bar(); // works!
}
}

class Qux
{
public:
static void bar()
{
std::cout << "Goodbye, World!";
}
static void baz()
{
bar(); // also works!
}
};

int main()
{
// Must say where I'm getting the function from.
foo::baz();
Qux::baz();
}

I'm writing a babby's first C++ program where one of the possible inputs it expects is an empty line, or a newline char. I'm using cin.get() because >> skips whitespace (even if it's passing a char, apparently), but it doesn't recognize the first newline character; you have to press enter twice for it to register. This doesn't apply for other inputs, which work just fine.

Yes I am clearing out the cin buffer between inputs (though bonus question: when I do cin.ignore(INT_MAX) and cin.clear() at the beginning of the program, just once, why doesn't the program accept any input?).

so I was offered an IT internship position today, I accepted and was told I had 24 hours to complete a drug test and a specified location.

I was a little worried because I smoked a bit of weed over the weekend but not a lot. so I loaded up on water and took the test.

surprisingly i was not thc positive, however i was positive for meth and pcp. i didn't realize it at the time, but benadryl (an allergy medication) will actually cause this to happen. however i did not let the nice lady know that it was probably benadryl.

I'm having network problems.

When my network is under load, like when I'm torrenting or updating Ethereum's blocks, after a while it just stops. Every other machine connected to the router works fine, and the connection goes back to normal after putting my machine to sleep for 5 seconds before starting again, so it's a problem with my machine.

I'm not good at troubleshooting, but there's one thing I noticed. When everything is fine, running "sudo dhclient enp33s0" returns "RTNETLINK answers: File exists". When it doesn't, it enters a deadlock. There's no eth0 either way.

What sort of problem could this be?

Hey, I'm trying to create a guest account for my win10 laptop. I'd like to restrict file access to C:/Users/guest/ or whatever the proper path is (so that they don't have access to my files). I'd also like to have more control over what the guest can do in general. Unfortunately Win10 gives you hardly any control over that. I have already tried using NTFS permissions, but I so far can only control access by entire groups, and the "authorized users" group (pic rel) also includes programs run by me, which is kinda pointless.
Any tips?

I'm so frustrated

I've spent a month trying to get just any image board script running on a local machine. It's specifically for LAN use so no "make your own board" sites are helpful.

My first few goes were on with debian on a raspberry pi, I've moved up to running it on a core2duo laptop and a windows 7 environment after getting frustrated with the pi's limitations. With every environment I can run simple 'hello' type perl scripts and see them running over apache2 from other PCs on the network. Whenever I try to run Kareha.pl it usually has trouble with index.html is the best guess i've gotten from the error logs, but in the end i'm usually getting generic 500 errors from it. I moved to windows because I thought it would have less issues with permissions.

What i'm looking for now:
- simple image board scripts (monoboard is fine)

- alternatives to XAMPP for windows (several kareha users find it incompatible)

- any OS or linux distro that comes pre-packaged with an apache/perl environment that makes it easier to run scripts over the network

- tips for making XAMPP work with Kareha (as it's what I currently have installed) the error i'm stuck on right now is:

[Tue May 30 20:54:58.472656 2017] [win32:error] [pid 3452:tid 1644] [client 192.168.0.101:49317] AH02102: C:/xampp/cgi-bin/kareha/index.html is not executable; ensure interpreted scripts have "#!" or "'!" first line

Is there a way to force Youtube to be a little bigger in 'theater mode'? Currently it just takes up the same amount of space it does in default mode. I figure this has something to do with the unusual resolution and aspect ratio of my device (Surface pro 3, so 3:2 2160x1440), mixed with Windows' shitty scaling, however changing the scaling of the device in Windows' settings does not affect the size of the youtube player. >>
>>60668927
gotcha
>>
>>60669320
"BIOS" is used in plenty of places even outside of PC's to describe the "main" system firmware that involves booting something else

for example, video game console bioses, which at least on earlier consoles did little more than boot the game

at least going off how i've seen it used, a bios is a type of main system firmware, which has a primary role of booting an OS or other single piece of software, but isn't itself the software one would typically use the machine for

so i'd call uefi a type of bios, as that suits how bios is used in general

Had a corsair h100i for about 4 years now and the pump has died. I need a new cpu cooler.

Is air cooled quieter than water cooled? Is it quieter at idle? Is it quieter at full load?

My main usage is idle/video watching, but sometimes I have to use the CPU for heavy simulations. I want something quiet, but also something that won't sound awful when at full load.

The h100i was quite good in both of these aspects (quiet at idle and not droning on load), but I don't really want to go watercooling again

I am an 18 year old high school drop out who is getting a GED.

I was accepted to a private college but I dont want to jump thru the paperwork to attend since they didnt know I dropped out.

I want to become a system admin, or another job where i can make $50,000-70,000+ just sitting on my ass taking care of stuff in an air conditioned room.

How should I go about teaching myself? Are there any good online schools/programs?

I have a introduction to python textbook that i plan on reading and working through.

I want to buy a laptop for my niece for college. Her family is very poor, and so am I. I've got about $150 to spend.

Right now, I'm looking at Thinkpad X201 Tablet edition for her. But I am open to any other suggestions. Any ideas?

Tits or g..
I mean macbook pro 2012 would match your needs and maybe get her boyfriend that will pretend to be rich and buy her newer version.
Your niece probably is not fat neckbeard that post in every thinkpad thread possible and spam install gentoo everywhere.

I'm not seeing any 2012 Macbook Pros in that $150 range. Or much of any of the other Macbooks.
>>
Whats the point of an 18 core i9? I suppose you could dedicate 10 cores to virtualization purposes and leave 8 for simulation rendering (as most editing programs tend to max out around 8 cores). Realistically though, why would a consumer buy this, especially when you can get a 1700X with 8 cores for ~$350 in comparison to ~$2000 for the i9-7980XE?
>>

>>

Consumers probably won't, except for the ones looking for bragging rights. Producers, on the other hand, will max out all the cores and demand to know why there's no 36 core version.

There's literally no reason to have anti virus in 2017. Hell an adblocker will prevent 99% of all malware out there.

What the hell are professional studios even doing where they would need to fully take advantage of all 18 cores? What programs specifically even take advantage of anything over 8? Then run three independent instances of those programs, on 6 cores each. Roughly three times the output for six times the cost isn't an automatic loss, if it lets them take on tasks or schedules that they couldn't before.

This course is focused on using troubleshooting models, tools, and approaches in remote access networks.
It covers material related to troubleshooting dial, ISDN, Frame Relay and Virtual Private Networks (PVN) solutions.

Does anyone have seen a cheatsheet I can use, i can't take free time from work to study, and can't find enough time to go through all the material. Although i know some of the stuff I need to brush my knowledge up...

What is it about torrent magnet hashes that prevent me from slightly modifying a file in torrent once I want to seed it?

Lets say I have a noble aim and simply replace a torrent I downloaded with 128kbps music with seperately downloaded 320kbps ones. 1:1 the same track, just higher quality (specifics aside).

What is it about these "new" files that makes the hash go "uh oh, you arent the originals"

From the perspective of a malicious user I can see the advantage for unsuspecting victims to have such a protection mechanism like this.

Which torrent program should I use? Back in the day, it used to be utorrent 2.2.1 because that was by far the best program and no one would recommend anything else. These days it seems like there's no real consensus on what's the best program. Is that because they're all kind of okay and just pick your favorite?

I've been trying out Vuze lately and that's been okay so far. It's got a plugin for my VPN which I like.

Allah, take it easy.
Download and install Microsoft Security Essentials and do a friggin scan.

If it doesn't find anything and you still suspect something is up, consolidate your important documents, music, photos, games, videos, media, stuff etc. onto a large USB drive or something and do a clean install of windows.
Its a win-win situation these days, you get a virus free install and your computer runs faster too. Reinstalls don't take an age like they used to in pre-vista days.

No offence, but the previous answers, while curt and abrasive are actually pretty accurate. These steps are basically the gold-standard for good computer usage practice.

Everything we do these days is based online, and the good people at google and mozilla are smart enough to realize their interests lie better served by simply having inbuilt virus, malware and dangerous website detection into the browser itself. Gmail filters for spam anyway/Thunderbird does much the same. And what they don't catch, common sense and a good adblocker should. Something something less time spent fixing computer virus problems something something more time spent online looking at ads which earns them revenue.

You really do have to be a cotton-brained cockatoo to mistake pop-ups, advertisements, phishing and scams as the content you are actually looking for.

>fucking magnets how do they work.
>>
>>60671064
It *still is* 2.2.1

The great thing about the digital world is that it is hardly influenced by the zeitgeist of our time. Programs built to do a specific function reach a point where the efficiency of this wanted function peaks, and any changes from there becomes a change for the worse. Winamp for instance has reached this peak a while ago, and all this extra bullcrap making it more "legal and profitable" in this day and age is pure and utter nonsense.

uTorrent fared the same around 2.2.1, and has since become riddled with IP/content tracking, advertising, revenue content, the list goes on....
