Since there's a lot of thinkpad users here I wanted to get your thoughts on the express card port. Do any of you use it and for what? Pretty much the only thing I can think of is a expresscard to usb 3.0 adapter but if any of you all found something cooler to use it for please post it here.

It's a shame no one makes products for this standard anymore, I don't know why lenovo continues to add it to their newer laptop.

comfy egpu port without having to open thickpad guts (isn't worth it if you're planning to use high specs cards, mind the latency of expresscard and you should be fine).
>>
>>60661336
This
Had a t420 with an egpu and a 750ti, it ran Rimworld at stable speeds unless you zoomed out.
Most anything else didn't run that good unless you have adequate laptop cooling. That's the more important thing, get a big beefy cooling fan pad
>>
>>60660277
I still use it for apogee audio since legacy audio gear is the only affordable way but that's on a mac book
>>
>>60660277
Extra usb slots, sdcard reader, smartcard reader or eGPU or even extra WLAN for connecting to different networks incase of two separate nas

what egpu is worth getting?
I could use something to experience with cuda or vulkan and keep using my laptop.
>>
>>60660277
get an SSD that fits into one. that's what I did 5 years ago.
>>
>>60662270
>what egpu is worth getting?
None. They're all too finicky and slow over Express. just fucking sell that old chunk of shit and get a new laptop with USB-C.
>>
>>60662324
Agreed. The thing is that I have a thinkpad p50 and it has usb-c and expresscard slot so I just wanted to get /g/'s thought on expresscard to see if they have any cool uses for it. I found a tv tuner express card adapter but it's only for the 54mm standard not the thinkpad's 33mm spec

3D printed ExpressCard SD card holder. You can download the files and have it printed somewhere like Shapeways.

Cool, will look into it.

>>60662835
literally can't boot off it
>>60662306
why? you can't even boot off it and for the money youre spending on shitty expresscard ssds you can save up for a proper sata ssd and hard drive caddy
>>
i used to use pcmcia back when my laptops didn't have built in sound/modem/usb/wifi
but i have yet to use an expresscard card, even though i do now have a laptop with a slot
it'd be neat to try out eGPU someday

>>60663648
>why? you can't even boot off it and for the money youre spending on shitty expresscard ssds you can save up for a proper sata ssd and hard drive caddy
Not him but i'd like to get one with the sole purpose of having 4 separate drives on my laptop.

That doesn't justify the price though.

An atheros wireless card since linux doesn't support my onboard one.

EXP GDC and a generic ATX power supply.
>>
By the way, does anyone have problems with removing their expresscard?
>>
>>60676156
I thought those uses mSATA connection?
>>
>>60676798
The EXP GDC has an M.2 version, msata version and an Expresscard version.

>>
>>60676825
I see, I thought it was weired.
Where to get a dedicated power supply for such projects?
>>
>>60676847
just plug the cheapest atx desktop power supply you can find

not too cheap though or it might explode crashing your egpu with no survivors
>>
I use mine for eGPU for my hp elitebook that I also recently equipped with i7 quad core

it's pretty pleasant to use this old, used, shitty looking business laptop to play most of the newest vidya when I'm at home after work
>>
>>60676862
>cheapest atx desktop power supply you can find
You'll need to short the pins though.
I thought there might be something for such projects with small form factor.
>>
>>60677198
>You'll need to short the pins though
Wait what, with the EXP GDC you don't.
>>
>>60676890
How are your temps? I had to downclock my quad core since temp kept going above 100c
>>
>>60676890
I did the same with my T420, including the quad core processor.

Just bought all the necessary components to hook an eGPU to my optimus laptop.
Going to do a mobile PCI passthrough, too.

Is expresscard usable for bumblebee?
What am I in for?
>>
How's Linux support for eGPU?
>>
>>60678574
Expresscard attached device is simply another PCI express device, it should work on Linux.

I don't suppose it supports any form of hot swap...?

If one were to attach or detach an eGPU not in use would it cause a system halt?
>>
>>60678702
ExpressCard is by design hot-swappable.
>>
>>60678574
Shitty, you have to fiddle with BIOS.

My body couldn't be more ready.

Could hook up a SAS HBA to a laptop of mine and turn it into a JBOD pile.
Sure the throughput would be stuck at 400MB/s but that's a shitload of storage on a laptop.

Do you need special drivers/software?
>>
>>60679838
Modems like that expose virtual serial ports via usb on which communication follows the AT command standard. Ob linux for example, the program wvdial can talk using this standard.
