Singular they has been in use since the 14th century. The only reason it's become an issue now is because people are booty-bothered about feminism. Scientific documentation has always tended towards gender-neutral language.

It is not hard to derive meaning from context, I don't really care whether a feminist would rather use "one" over "man".
