AFwall+ to firewall apps that have no business going online
OS monitor to check what is running or accessing internet.

Wipe system partition, flash ROM. Leave Data/Userdata untouched. Should be fine.

If you get constant crash popups, reflash gapps, get a system app remover and uninstall them manually.

Either way, factory reset in TWRP doesn't touch Userdata, so it'll leave your internal SD intact.

I had a lot of APN issues with my OP3 on AT&T, it took forever to find the right settings (even using settings that other people said "worked"), and oddly enough I had to use the SIM 2 tray instead of #1 to get it to stay on LTE. On top of that though, HD Voice/VoLTE doesn't work with AT&T, it only works with their branded devices or iPhones.

I have the Redmi 4 Prime (that's the 5" manlet version) and I think it's got the same camera as the Note 4. The camera isn't bad. But it's not great or excellent either. The cameras on the Samsung 7 and 8, for example, are much better. I'd say the camera is alright, but that's about it. I guess it depends on how you look at it. If I take a bunch of pictures with my Blackview BV6000 and look at them afterwards then I'd say those pictures are really bad. Pictures taken by my redmeme 4 are fine - but again, I wouldn't say they are stunning or great or excellent.

Why won't it update to nougat even if I try to search for update it says its full updated?

as far as "data" is concerned i can go into data usage and data usage settings/plan as well as advanced data settings. I'm using ZUI with Android 7.0 nougat, chinese version. there are some menus that are bugged however, "app permissions" menu returns you to the settings menu, so you need to download a separate app to manage app permissions manually.

yes, it's highly recommended that you flash the chinese rom with nougat 7.0. it's the official lenovo version of ZUI and is super stable, all gapps working perfectly and with a good english translation.

the reason you should not use the pre-installed rom is that it's a modded "shop rom" that the warehouse installed to add more languages for the international market, and it's very likely that it has pre-installed backdoors or low level botnets and bugs.

beware, DO NOT update the phone from the normal ota settings -- this will brick your phone. the international version is not compatible for updating ota to the official android 7.0 nougat version, so you need to manually flash this version yourself. you don't need to unlock the bootloader before doing this, so it's pretty convenient, and there are some nice tutorials on youtube. you don't need to be rooted before flashing the new version either.

Alright, thanks for the info. I'll probably try an M ROM first to see if things like xposed greenify and amplify (I have the paid version of each) will make it even better; not sure how much of an impact it'll make over just using an N ROM, but I'm hopeful.

Touchwizz in general is still pretty shite, but it's gotten noticeably better with each new iteration. I only messed around with an S8 for a few minutes but it seems pretty close to the Note 7 ROM (which I have on my current Note 4). They're at least TRYING to make something cohesive, rather than the mess it used to be.
