I use Firefox on Linux (because I'm not retarded and/or a spewing /v/ manchild), and stay below 2GIB of RAM usage with many tabs open. I would say 8 GIB is more than plenty.

2.5 GB DDR ram installed on a WinXP machine. I've never seen it hit 2 GB use. Pretty rare to ever see it exceed 1 GB. I think last week some time I saw it at 1.2 GB, using firefox with about 20 tabs open. Usually boots to ~220 MB and 19 processes, then firefox jumps it to ~600-800 MB for typical sessions with 10-15 tabs open. Whole thing runs off a 128 GB Samsung 830 SSD & 3.6 GHz Pentium 4; I rarely ever see a Win7 machine that runs as fast.
